Question of the Day - 26 October 2020

Q:

I read that the leftover food from the buffets was brought to the pig farm north of Las Vegas. Now that there are no buffets, did the pig farm go out of business?

A:

The old RC Farm (named after owner Robert Combs) was bought out of its otherwise-residential location in North Las Vegas in 2017. The elder Combs retired from the business and the pig farm relocated to a new site on West Ann Road. Bob's sons Hank and Clint Combs now run the business as Combs Brothers LLC and yes, they’re still recycling food from local casinos.

Two buffets are operating in Las Vegas (Cosmopolitan and South Point), but the other 68 or so aren't and that's a definite hardship on the pig farm, which depended a great deal on leftover buffet food to feed its livestock.

Hank Combs wrote us to say, “[The buffet shutdown] has taken its toll on our farm. The pigs aren't going without. It’s just that we had to reduce our inventory to [correspond to] the amount of feed we're getting. This is about 25 percent of our capacity, which makes it hard on our cash flow and to meet overhead experiences.”

Out-of-state and local food warehouses have proven to be a backup source for pig fodder. But if the buffets don’t come back, it looks like the Combs brothers and their swine will be in for some continuing hard times.

Sooo sad. Now the combs Brothers will have to dig into their own pockets to feed their little Piggly Wigglys and their livelihood!
This is a for profit business, isn't it?

Look on the bright side Reno Faoro
When your belly gets big enough, no one is going to cut you up and feed you to buffet customers.
    LOL

The real crisis confronting this country...
...is a lack of food waste due to diminished restaurant business!!! The Pig Party will not stand for this and will be lobbying Carson City for relief. There will be a Swine Strike if all the half-eaten buffet food doesn't come back soon. No buffet scraps, no bacon! will be the rallying cry.

    Question
One thing that the article didn't make clear: The food that goes to the pig farm, is that talking about only the food left in the serving bins behind the glass/plastic protective shields and/or the food that hasn't yet been put into the serving bins? Or is it talking about the uneaten food on diners' plates? Or both?

    Pigs love it all
I believe all of the waste food gets collected and sent to the pigs. This includes uneaten food scraped off customers plates, food that gets dropped on the floor in the dining room, the kitchen and at serving stations, and food that sits around too long on the buffet and is removed so buffet stays fresh. I think very little food is thrown in the trash. Not throwing it in the trash helps reduce problems the resort could have with rodents and insects. And the pigs are not picky, they'll eat just about anything.
