Question of the Day - 08 February 2019

Q:

Why have several casinos added expiration dates to their players club cards?

A:

"Nothing new" is the consensus on this topic.

For example, point expiry has been standard practice at the Cosmopolitan since it opened. As the Cosmo’s Stephanie Capellas talks us through it, “Identity Points earned will only expire if a guest’s account is inactive for 12 months. For Tier Progression, progress is determined by the number of Tier Points earned during the previous 365-day period. Once a Tier Status is achieved, it remains valid for 12 months. If a new Tier Status is earned during that time period, that new Tier Status will be valid for 12 months. Table games play is evaluated each month and table game play does not earn points.”

“For the majority of our Boarding Pass card tiers, it states a 'member since' and does carry an expiration date,” says Station Casinos communications director Lori Nelson. “I don’t believe this is new to us.”

“I'm told that MLife Rewards cards have featured an expiration date since 2011,” says Callie Driehorst of MGM Resorts International.

We received similar confirmation regarding Caesars Total Rewards.

Boyd Gaming also maintains that its policy has always been the same. “In B Connected, higher-tier cards (Sapphire, Emerald, Onyx, and Titanium) are re-issued each year to reflect the player’s earned tier status for the new year, which is based on their play history over the past 12 months,” explains spokesman David Strow.

“For example, suppose you had an Emerald card last year. Your earned enough tier credits in 2018 to qualify for Onyx status. As of December 31, we would send you a replacement Onyx card to replace your 2018 Emerald card. (Conversely, if a player earned only enough tier credits to qualify for Sapphire, they would receive a Sapphire card for 2019 to replace the 2018 Emerald card.)

“The physical card doesn’t actually expire like a credit card, though,” Strow continues. “Even after January 1, players can continue to use the old card to earn and redeem benefits, but they will receive perks and benefits based on their tier level in 2019, not 2018. The exception to this rule is the Ruby card (our entry-level card). A player can continue to use this card indefinitely, at least until they qualify for a higher level!”

    Casears Rewards
So in NJ the parking at Caesars can be as much as $20 if you have either Gold or no member card. The expiration is for the player who reaches platinum to achieve free parking and then never goes back to Casear's properties to play. The parking lot is prime real estate and its very difficult to find parking especially in the summer.

    Boyd again...haha
Yes, by all means, let’s continue to use the Ruby card “indefinitely,” even though it earns you zero points and you need to run $six-figures$ through the VP machines to move up to Sapphire.

To put it simply, entry-level cards at any casino don't have expiration dates. The upper-level cards have expiration dates because they are usually valid for a year. Every year the player must earn enough tier credits to renew the upper-level card.

    all about the gifts
The expiration date is for redeeming comps and promotions that come only with a particular tier level. One can use an 'old' card in the slots forever until it crumbles. But redeeming your set of mixing bowls, for instance, requires a card with current expiration date (and your ID). To insure the goodies are only given out when the tier is current for that year, that offer.
