Question of the Day - 22 April 2019

Q:
What happens if your spouse dies with player club points at a casino. Can the spouse claim the points or are they lost forever?
A:

Like so many casino situations, this one isn't cut and dried. The surviving spouse has to read the club rules carefully.

Some are very strict. Others aren't. Station Casinos, for example, has a program where two people can set up a joint account and collect points for each other.

And even if there are strict rules, hosts can sometimes work with a couple's points after one of them dies.

Jean Scott tells us, "I've had friends that have been able to cash in dead partners' benefits, with a host doing a transfer. But this is usually for married couple with the same name. It's probably not doable by children, or relatives, or non-relatives even with the same address."

So it's a good idea to find out beforehand what you'll be up against in the event. If you can't, and if the rules at the casino with the points are strict, talk to a host, whom you'll find in the VIP office or by asking at the slot club booth, and see what can be done.

    Four Queens
Not sure about the points, which can be redeemed for cash, but the comp dollars (used for food, rooms, etc.)are lost. I love the 4Q, but this policy is just BAD.

I have good news and bad news
The bad news is that Fred, my beloved hubby of 47 years, passed away last week after a long illness. The good news is that I get all his slot club points!! WHEE!!!

My advice is to remarry so that you'll still be able to use all those LVA twofer coupons.

    Kevin
So sorry for your loss, Kevin.

    Wow
I’m surprised that any casino gives the spouses points or rewards, at all.

After all, they are not owed to the player, but are an incentive for future play. Sure, the amounts might be based on prior play, if the player dies, how can there be any future play?

    Just kidding
I've never been married. But if I was, I'd like to think that my wife would be sitting by my hospital bed, weeping and saying, "You can't die, you have half a million unredeemed slot club points!"

And Dave, you have a good point, although I think most people think of points as a reward rather than an incentive. But you're wrong in another aspect--points do have tangible value and are an asset belonging to the player once earned--Nevada courts have repeatedly said so. That's why even if a casino bars you, they will still cash out your points--they're yours, and can't be legally taken away.

    why is this so hard?
Put the deceased card in the machine, put in their password, and play the account off until gone. Course, you must know your partner's password! Heck you might even win more money than you had points to cash in. This is not that hard people. DUH!

    jackpot problem
Galeekas, just don't hit a taxable jackpot while playing off the deceased's points. You'd have to show the winner's ID, which would make the casino very unhappy and ya just might get shown the door forever. Plus, the Fed knows all...

Is it possible casinos would be linked to a system that captures deaths of players card owners? I know other entities do, like banks.

Don't play at a jackpot level
Thanks Candy for pointing that out. However, in this case , just don't play any machine that can hit a hand pay jackpot or generate a W2G. The feds will never know if you are smart about the way you gamble the points.
