Question of the Day - 12 December 2018

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: What's your favorite non-gambling activity in Las Vegas?

A:

With gambling budgets falling and non-gambling activities accounting for more and more casino-resort revenues, we thought it appropriate to conduct a poll on your favorite Vegas pastimes beyond the slots, tables, poker room, and sports book.

This is the preview for next week’s poll; all suggestions for improving the choices are as always most welcome.

    Activity
    You need pool and spa.

  • Grant Crawford Dec-12-2018
    Dull, but there it is.
If you only go for the gambling, then "sleeping" is a reasonable second choice.

    Take a HIKE
Not just sight-seeing, but hiking the beautiful trails @ Red Rock, Mt Charleston, & Lake Mead areas.

    generic answers?
The choices are all so generic, and considering how many there are, that's good. I hope that means our comments will specify what kind of shopping, sightseeing, eating, etc. we do.

    Day trip travel
LV is a day trip from several good getaways - Death Valley, Area 51 (cue creepy music), Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Mt. Charleston, Zion National Park, Valley of Fire SP. For a neat scenic loop drive I take 160 to the intersection of 95, then east through Indian Springs and back to LV. Circles around Mount Charleston. Yep, life outside of the casinos!!

    Activity
Hiking the 1,000s of trails in the valley.
    Fishing/boating.

    other activities
I like to take the lake Mead paddleboat over to the dam once a year or so, it's a really nice escape from the city. Also valley of fire or red rocks and go hiking. Once in awhile Mt Charleston. The other thing I like to do is just plain RELAX. Whether that's hanging out in the room, or going to a massage place, or whatever, I like to decompress when in Vegas.

    Non-gambling Vegas activities
I'd like to see the poll be a little more specific than the too-general caterogies above, with examples. For example: Specialty bars (Frankie's Tiki Room, Atomic Lounge, Minus 5º Ice Experience, etc.)... Pinball Hall of Fame.... Neon Boneyard & Brilliant.... Museums (Atomic Testing, Erotic Heritage, Mob, etc.) .... Cigar lounges.... Stargazing, esp. during meteor showers... Using LVA coupons at buffets.... Celebrity-chef restaurants (Rubochon, Savoy, Ramsay, etc.)... Seeking out unique casino attractions (Silverton mermaids, Mirage volcano, Bellagio conservatory, etc.).... Indoor activities (axe throwing, archery, go karts, etc.).... Thrill activities (skydiving, bungee jumping, Stratosphere rides, etc.).... and so on. The categories being too general doesn't necessarily jog one's memory enough... and someone's go-to (e.g., skydiving or archery) isn't in any of the categories. Good luck and this should be fun one!!!!

    Base for Exploring
Vegas is a great place for us to use as a base for exploring the Western US.
Cheap to get to from the East Coast.
    Cheap rental cars.
    Cheap hotel rooms.
Realatively central to many destinations in the west.
We usually plan on ten days in Vegas with three to four days of travel time away from the city.
We usually leave on a Friday when the CaliCrazies roll in.

  • Dave Dec-12-2018
    DUH!!
    No mention of "Sexy time".

  • Brent Peterson Dec-12-2018
    Non-Gambling Activity
Driving around the valley to see the "real" Las Vegas.

  • Larry Brill Dec-12-2018
    Non- gaming activities
I would also add "Nature Explorations" - Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Mt. Charleston, etc. We also enjoy both the rodeo arena and tournament bowling alley at South Point where we spend some time observing. We make also make time for a movie (something I never used to do on vacation, but now we don't seem to have/or make time otherwise.

  • Rick Sanchez Dec-12-2018
    Crystal
A "site seeing" trip to Crystal, NV.

  • Debra Grimes Dec-12-2018
    Non-gambling activity
We always plan a spa day including a long relaxing massage.

    Nature
I agree with Larry Brill - I usually take an out-of-city tour to places like Red Rock, Valley of Fire, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, El Dorado Canyon, etc. All have been very enjoyable.

Also, I hope you let us vote for more than one - it will be hard for me not to choose at least 3 or 4 of the activities.

  • Dave Dec-12-2018
    Generic
Frankly, I like that the current choices are generic. Otherwise thee would be too many specific things.

But I’d add ‘driving’. Yeah, I guess it falls under sight seeing, but the drive to get to the sights can be fun too.
