Question of the Day - 21 October 2020

Q:

The following was submitted as a Question of the Day by a reader: "What are the best places for breakfast in the greater Las Vegas area? I’m not necessarily talking about the Strip or downtown, but neighborhood places, such as the Egg and I."

We love poll suggestions, whether they come as a QoD submission or a bona fide idea for a survey. And though dining questions aren't our most popular polls, when a good suggestion comes in, we like to honor it.

So here's a list of our top breakfast spots in Las Vegas, off the top of our heads. We didn't include casino restaurants, since the question specified "neighborhood places," though we couldn't very well leave out Du-Par's at the Suncoast and Arizona Charlie's, whose ham/steak and eggs has been in the Top Ten since Millard Fillmore was president.

We're sure we didn't remember them all, so please add your own favorites in the comment boxes.

    McDonalds
OK. Not McDonalds, even though that's my usual personal go-to breakfast option.

But I think you should either include ALL of the better casino options, or none of them. After all, is this poll for locals or tourists? And if it's for tourists (or both), just tourists with cars and/or willing to taxi/uber to the location? The latter seems unlikely for breakfast.

You should also include the location (address/cross street).

    Buffet at the South Point
It's one of 2 buffets currently open in the Las Vegas area, and the best option, especially for locals or tourists willing to take the short drive from the strip. LVA even has a printable 2 for 1 breakfast coupon for the SOuth Point buffet.

    How hot is it?
I would say if it's summer and 90 degrees at 8 am, the best breakfast is a shrimp cocktail & diet coke - so maybe Golden Gate? If it's not that hot try the breakfast sandwich at White Castle and have them add grilled onions. I had that once and it was FABulous ;)

    brake fast
Downtown , binions G.N buffet , the CAL (SPAM , OXTAILS), FOUE QUEENS -MAGNOLIAS , all are inexpensive , unlike PEPPERMILL. SADLY, BINIONS coffee shop downstairs was the GREATEST, quality , price , etc. WAITING IN LINE ON THE STEPS was WELL worth it ! thanks to BECKY --- NO MOE . .

  • Hobbs Oct-21-2020
    Downtown
Binion's Café Simple, reasonable but very good old Vegas.

  • Gene Brown Oct-21-2020
    Best Breakfast
The Black Bear Restaurant, South Las Vegas Blvd.

Two more EXCELLENT "off the strip" breakfast options.
Glad you kept it to local places,, some "hidden" local breakfast restaurants, have casino places beat on quality, hands down.

I love Jamm's on Rainbow. They have a HUGE Country Skillet, loaded with sausage, mushrooms, potatoes, etc. I have never been able to finish it. Enough to two people and very tasty! They also have something called a "Pot O' Bread which they actually trademarked. Can't adequately describe it but it is GOOD!

Can also add Mary's Hash House on Decatur. Great home made hash - 4 varieties including corned beef and turkey.

Ellis Island must be on any breakfast list, for the old time atmosphere and pricing that can't be beat. For more money, Peppermill can't be beat. Previous to my visit last week, I would have said Hash House at the Linq would need to be on the list, but for whatever reason, all of us found the breakfast VERY lacking on this trip.

    Breakfast options poll
We would include Mary's Hash House, especially if they've just baked their wonderful cinnamon rolls. Their homemade hash is made to order, so my picky eater husband can have his without onions or peppers (but then, is it really hash?) We also tried the Black Bear Diner on our last trip and it was quite good.

    and these too
Copper Whisk Cafe, and Medley Buffet ( when it opens) at The Orleans, they both have great family atmosphere there as well as at South Point's Coronado Cafe and their buffet.

  • Kevin Lewis Oct-21-2020
    Add this one
Mary's Hash House on Decatur. Beats the living crap out of Hash House a Go Away, and at about half the price. They make their own everything, including jams and jellies.

  • Jack Gruber Oct-21-2020
    add these 2
Broken Yolk is a new favorite, but the Original Sunrise Cafe, and The Original Pancake House are old favorites.

That is my contribution. You can choose from a wide variety of pancake flavors. The pancakes are massive, too. I visit here all the time when in town. Anyone who has ever been knows how right I am

  • IdahoPat Oct-21-2020
    Not in Vegas, but ...
... Bumbleberry Flats at the Pioneer in Laughlin has the most diverse breakfast menu I can ever recall.

  • salukidean Oct-21-2020
How can you not have a place for breakfast burritos on the list?
For convenience, Robertos is the stop. However, nothing beats a good greasy chorizo burrito in the morning at Filipinos.

  • Annette Sietman Oct-21-2020

    Please!
This visitor and breakfast lover would appreciate the inclusion of casino options, and some location identifier for each option. I'd also like you to encourage folks to identify in the comments if a particular dish draws them to to a selection. Like the pancakes at Du-Par's... worth the drive!

  • Llew Oct-22-2020
    Both?
Why not two polls: one for locals eateries and on for casino restaurants?

    problem with the poll
A poll like this, with at least 30 possibles, does not indicate the best places. Actually, the comments are the answer. Everyone may have a favorite or 2, but even the locals may not have been to more than a half dozen of the choices to compare. And as some have pointed out, it's really value that counts. The price of breakfast SHOULD be similar, eggs are eggs, bacon is bacon, etc. So, when you answer, tell me WHY you like it, is it worth what you have to pay, and, if it's a journey, is it worth the trip. And maybe the real survey should be why I like a certain Strip place, or a near-strip place or downtown place or finally not near strip local place. But to my first point, if 10% of the people choose one place and 5% choose another, we don't really know if 10% did NOT like the 1st but were only able to vote yes on what they liked. So just say to the readers, "pick a place, tell us why you do or don't like it". No %'s needed, just personal analysis.
