Question of the Day - 22 May 2019

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: What are your current thoughts about Cirque du Soleil?

A:

We haven’t run this poll for nearly 10 years and a lot’s happened on the Cirque front since then. For example, Criss Angel has parted ways with the company, Viva Elvis came and went, and R.U.N. will open at Luxor in October.

The question is, what are your current thoughts about Cirque du Soleil?

This is just the preview, so we’re looking only for ways to improve the poll, specifically choices that might be worded better or added to the list. We all look forward to reading your comments about Cirque itself when the poll runs a week from today.

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show is Mystère.

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show is O.

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque de Soleil show is .

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show is Zumanity.

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show is LOVE.

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show is Michael Jackson One.

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show was Criss Angel Mindfreak.

My favorite Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show was Viva Elvis.

I’ve never seen a Cirque show, but I’d love to see what all the fuss is about.

I’ve never seen a Cirque show and have no desire to -- not my taste at all.

I’ve seen a Cirque performance and it’s not something I’d sit through again.

I would love to see one of their shows, but they're too expensive.

I can’t get enough of Cirque and hope they just keep coming out with interesting new shows and concepts.

I’ve enjoyed the Cirque performances I’ve seen, but it seems like we’re falling over their shows now and I’d like more variety in the Las Vegas entertainment arena.

I like the earlier Cirque shows that seemed more whimsical and focused on the amazing acrobatics of the cast and unique music; I’m not so keen on the new trend toward “personalities” and tributes to well-known performers.

I’m really looking forward to the new action-thriller show R.U.N., which sounds like it’s taking Cirque in a new direction.

    Comedy
I rarely see shows in Vegas at all and when I do, it’s always comedy. So Cirque isn’t even on my radar.

  • Grant Crawford May-22-2019
    Meh
Although LOVE is my favorite Vegas show, and I have seen several Cirque shows over the years, they are generally not my cup of tea.

    Been There, Done That
I think I agree with your third to last statement. I assume you mean that there are too many Cirque shows now and more variety would be nice. I've seen about 4 different ones, and they are great, but that is enough for me.

  • O2bnVegas May-22-2019
    Well done
    Good job on this.

One suggestion, having to do with the last option: "I like the earlier Cirque shows..."

Insert "prefer" in the place of "like."

Then there should be an opposing option: "I prefer the newer shows designed to feature "personalities" and tributes to well-known performers."

Assuming one objective is to learn which type folks are preferring overall, not only the individual show favorite.

Will there only be one vote allowed period? As in one vote for the favorite show? Would that prevent voting for any of the last three questions?

Thanks for your hard work on these polls.

    I'm an odd one
I have seen almost every CDS show in Vegas and have not liked any of them really.

My favorite would be Zummanity, but even that is not saying much. They kept talking about pansexuality, but seemed to skate around using the word. I was also mad I was talked into buying the VIP seats for the better view when really the VIP seats are so close and most of the action was up in the air the cheap seats would have been best.

    No big deal
Same acrobatics, different music. Maybe Ka could be classified as different...otherwise, wake me up when its over.

  • Llew May-22-2019
    Cirque
Not sure how you would word it, but this is my take. I enjoyed the first Cirque show that I saw. At my second one, I got a "been there, done that" feeling. Haven't seen one since.

    Another spin on it
I would click the box that says - I've seen most of the shows multiple times, but with so many different entertainment options these days, the newer shows just seem to be too expensive to want to buy a ticket to see them.
Or - I enjoy the shows, but find that my entertainment dollar goes much further elsewhere these days.

  • Vadastaha May-22-2019
    Seen 1- seen them all
I have seen O, Mystere, and LOVE. Loved LOVE. But- they are all the same. Flying acrobatics, contortionist, strength moves, silly clown, and aerialist. Seen Absinthe too. Which was the same, but just closer up.

"...it’s not something I’d sit through again."
I've seen exactly one Cirque show in Las Vegas: the original "Mystere" at Treasure Island shortly after it opened, and that was enough. I remember some big guy crawling around in a diaper; singers chanting in some unknown language; and waiting almost 20 minutes in the middle of the show while they set up the safety nets for the finale with the Russian trapeze artists. I was singularly unimpressed, and have not seen any of the others.
Originally, the Cirque concept was a radical departure from the traditional Vegas "feather" show, most of which I had seen at one time or another. Mystere was described as "un-Vegasy" at the time, and Mr. Wynn was praised for his bold vision. Now it's become the norm, and the feather shows are gone.
It's part of the general morphing of the entire Las Vegas experience into something I hardly recognize any more, let alone care about.

  • Ray May-22-2019
    how do you do it?
How do you sift through the comments that ignore what you are asking? Other than Candy, who did exactly what you asked, good job, Candy, and Kurt, who talks about the cost and spending your entertainment dollar, maybe Llew's "once was enough" could be incorporated into the mix, but the comments that should be reserved for the actual poll next week seem to always get in the way of the purpose of the preview. Too many people just don't care to follow directions anymore. Sorry for the rant, I look forward to the real poll next week.

Get rid of the audience clowns
I have seen all of the cirque shows and enjoy the performances. I am curious if others find the clowns that roam the audience as annoying and sometimes abusive as I do. These performers in my opinion detract from the performance on stage.

  • Vickar May-22-2019
    Over done
Cirque du Soleil is a saturated venue. Bring back the glitz and glamour of at least one of the iconic classic extravaganzas with show girls and variety acts like "Jubilee" or "The Follies"

  • Reno Faoro May-22-2019
    next ? of the day
another non important question -- tomato -tomatoe potato -potatoe ,rather -interview HOLZHAUER as to best and worst VEGAS bets, that he has made = he did , on air , pick the LIGHTNING TO WIN THE CUP THIS YEAR . (THEY WERE SWEPT IN 4 GAMES ) .GO DEARBORN FORDSON.

  • Rob Reid May-22-2019
I don't understand why there are there so many of them?
I've never understood why there are so many of these shows. Yes, they are different, but they seem to me to be just variations on the theme--more or less. It seems to me that if we could get rid of some of the Cirque shows it would free up opportunities for other shows or performers and the variety of the entertainment in Las Vegas would be greatly enhanced

  • Robin Heller May-22-2019
    You forgot Love!
I love Cirque, I think people are either a Cirque fan or not, I do think that suggesting a rotation of other Cirque shows might revive interest, as many do not play in Las Vegas. Maybe a write in option for favorite show, as you don't mention them all individually?

    Cirque Poll
I enjoyed Mystere 15-20 years ago, enough to see O when it opened. Been meaning to see Zumanity but never seem to get to it. The other shows don't have a lot interest, cost being part of the problem. Very much enjoy the live music. Not heard of RUN, will look into it.

  • Del Miller May-22-2019
    ENOUGH!
I've seen four or five of them and have enjoyed them, but I agree with the people who say they've saturated the market. I would like to see something different (and less expensive) I would still like to see O!, but it's out of my budget. The person who said the higher up, less expensive seats are better for viewing is right, however they're STILL out of my budget for this show. You should always look at the venue maps so you can see where the entrances ans exits for the performers are and sometimes you can even see where the spotlights are and can avoid having one right in your face. I am originally from NYC/NJ area and as a college student I saw all the best of Broadway shows in the '50 and 60's for $1.20 BUT you paid a price. I saw The Ballet Russe one time but all I saw were the dancers feet and legs (no arms or torsos) because they dancers were too far back on the stage. That's how I learned to check the venue! It was interesting, though.

    Gouging
I have wanted to see a Cirque show for some 20 years, but refuse to pay the additional fees and charges that are tacked on. I am tired of the same old advertised reasonable ticket priced being a lie as there are the additional fees (not advertised) tacked on. Just list the TOTAL price! Quit gouging at every turn.

  • michaest May-22-2019
    Music
What about a question about the Cirque music? The acrobatics all tend to be very familiar from one show to another, but the soundtracks have some very good music and singing.

  • O2bnVegas May-22-2019
    To Ray
Thank you, Ray. I enjoy the challenge.

Perhaps the staff could capitalize PREVIEW, and "ONLY LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE THE POLL", though I doubt attention would be paid.

I think of a jr. high school teacher I had who would rap her ruler on the desk and shout "PAY ATTENTION!! PAY ATTENTION!!" LOL.

    So many shows...
I think the first question should be "how many Cirque shows have you seen" since the comments of those who have seen many may be different from those who have seen one (or none)! I agree with the comments that Cirque has saturated the market and needs to go in new directions. Also, I have seen O twice and enjoyed it--but the technology has improved since it came out--Le Reve at Wynn has gone way beyond Cirque. Thus, I think the Cirque needs to freshen its offerings and broaden its appeal by going in new directions! Can that be incorporated into the questions?

  • dpanagrosso May-22-2019
    Multiple Answers
I think this question should allow multiple answers. I have a favorite show, but I also think it's getting to be overkill with Cirque shows. My first was when Mystere was performed in a tent behind The Mirage before Treasure Island was built. And I've seen many since. But looking back, there is so much overlap between the shows, and I've spent way too much money on them, between Vegas and the traveling shows. It's time for some new entertainment.

    Vote
I hope you allow more than one choice, since I would want to pick my favorite and choose on of the options at the bottom.

I've seen Mystery 8 or 9 times, never get tired of it. The music is so amazing! I've seen Ka twice, O and Love once each. I could see going to Ka again, the other two, once is enough.

By the way, the free backstage look at Ka is definitely worth checking out!
