Question of the Day - 05 September 2018

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: How are comps treating you lately?

A:

We ran this poll exactly seven years ago and things have progressed, in one direction or the other, since then. We’d like to hear your opinions on comps and what you’ve noticed about how they’ve changed over the past one to seven years—and even further, according to how far back you go and if you remember those days.

Keep in mind, this is the poll preview. You can’t vote here; that’ll happen a week from today. And comments, though always appreciated, are best served on the poll page itself. Today, we’re just looking for suggestions on how to improve the poll selections that follow.

I haven’t noticed any change in the quantity or quality of comps that I’ve been receiving.

I still get offers, but I’ve noticed a distinct drop in the quality of comps I receive.

I continue to receive good comps, but far less frequently for the same level of play, as compared to the good old days.

I’m noticing a difference in comping policies on the Strip, downtown, and in the locals casinos, with some getting better and some getting worse.

I’ve been receiving fewer/lesser comps, but that’s because I’ve been visiting and/or gambling in Las Vegas far less often.

I’ve noticed an improvement in the quantity and quality of comps.

I don’t belong to any players clubs, nor do I have a host, so I don’t qualify for comps.

What’s a “comp”?

    comps
You should add an option for same comps as before, but I have upped my play substantially. I think a lot of players forget to add inflation into their formulas. Years ago I got good comps on 5k play per day, but prices and salaries and everything have gone up and so has my play. What I have noticed, however, is my free play offers have been reduced, and places like Boyd are slashing cashback.

    Fewer comps for visitors?
I only get to Vegas twice a year (at the moment) so outside of slot play and a free buffet, comps yet don't happen or my points expire. Voters should list their worst experience(s). For example, "Grazi" has never comped us for anything at all.

Comps seem to be better ANYWHERE off the strip
I have found that comps coming from the strip casinos are down (as in almost non-existent) but are still decent / about the same in outlying casinos like The M and Rampart.

To be fair, this may be because I now do most / all of my gambling at the "outlying" casinos. The recent (bad) changes like parking fees / and reduced odds on the strip has ended 95% of my strip casino gambling.

I have noticed some good comps coming from Laughlin Casinos though. Particularly a lot of free room offers. As a result, rather than our "traditional" day trip to Laughlin, we will spend at least one night there.

    No More Sign-up Bonus
In Downtown Las Vegas, and possibly elsewhere, there are no longer free play incentives like $5 or $10 free play, or spin a wheel to get up to $100 free slot play, when you initially signed up for a players card. This was the hook needed to entice people to become players, then gamblers, and put them on the mailing list for future enticements. It was sort of a comp, but it has been discontinued which, in my opinion, was a mistake by the casinos that will hurt their business in the long run.

    Economy
I think some offers go up and down according to the economy and especially when it’s specific or involves the Las Vegas economy. Overall, I think because of corporate ownership, stockholders are the only ones that matter and offers will continue to shrink for clients.

    very impersonal
It seems that comps have become more formalized (at least for low rollers). All "comps" seem to be dependent on what your play buys by virtue of points. It seems that there are no "little guy" hosts that can hand out comps any more.

    Comps
Since most casinos have changed to a strict points system, it seems to favor slots players. I pretty much only play table games and, since I'm not a big money player, I don't qualify for much anymore. Playing s medium amount steadily for hours at a time doesn't seem to count for much these days.

    comps
Just my observation.....we used to rely strictly on mailers for our Vegas visits. As things tightened up over the last 5 or 6 year, we rely on hosts for our comps. Room comps are 'up front' while anything we charge to our room is reviewed upon departure. Dealing with hosts isn't something we wanted to do, but it was our way of securing what we needed. It used to be that mailers gave us what we wanted. Not now. We have been educated to ask for what we want.

    Value?
If you look at the MLife promo literature you earn comps faster on food and beverage than you do on slots or other gambling. My visits have decreased and even when I was going more often I noticed the offers were not as goodl. Other people I know say their comp offers have dropped even though they spend about the same.

How about "Comps have gotten worse even though my play has increased."
