Question of the Day - 05 June 2019

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: LasVegasAdvisor.com visitor demographics

A:

It's been three years since we last ran this less-exciting-than-usual poll. It's simple and basic, but this type of demographic information is very important to us in our efforts to secure ongoing Printable Rewards and MRB deals from the casinos, so it should pay off for you in the end.

The choices are self-explanatory (and new and improved after receiving excellent feedback the last time we ran it), but we thought you might have some suggestions on how to make it more (or less!) representative. Thanks in advance for anything you might offer to improve this poll, which will run a week from today.

I'm male.

I'm female.

I live in Nevada.

I don't live in Nevada.

I'm younger than 20.

I'm 20-29.

I'm 30-39.

I'm 40-49.

I'm 50-59.

I'm 60-69.

I'm 70-79.

I'm 80-89.

I'm 90-99.

I'm 100+.

I earn less than $25,000 per year.

I earn $25,000 to $49,999 per year.

I earn $50,000 to $74,999 per year.

I earn $75,000 to $99,999 per year.

I earn $100,000-$249,999 per year.

I earn $250,000+ per year.

    Demographic Questions
    How about married or single?

Also, any poll that requests earnings, I don't bother.

    Native Son?
Sorry but there's no where else to put this. I challenge you on your statement that you're proud of James Holzhauer, your native son. He's from Naperville, IL and we in IL are proud of our native son James Holzhauer :-)

    Not all Nevadans are "locals"
While I agree that a reader's home location is an important datum, state of residence is insufficient to capture this. A resident of Reno is no more a Las Vegas local than a resident of Los Angeles. Given the difficulty of drawing lines and expressing them, perhaps offer "I am a Las Vegas local" and "I'm not a Las Vegas local."

  • slickmv Jun-05-2019
    Proviso
Of course, if your reason for asking about Nevada residency is driven by the requirements of your MRB "partners," my previous comment may be moot.

    Who are you?
    White male,67,unmarried.
    Income? NO.

    questions
that's fine, and I don't mind the income question but I would call it household income, for couples that's more important

  • Toni Armstrong Jr. Jun-05-2019
    Poll suggestions
    1. Add “I identify as nonbinary/gender fluid”.... 2. Add “I prefer not to answer” (income)... 3. Choices: Clark County resident, Nevada resident (outside of Clark County), state other than Nevada, country other than USA.

    Family
    Kids / no kids?
It might be less important of a stat for Las Vegas, but when I come into town to see the Raiders (2020 and beyond) I'll likely be bringing my son and might look for coupon friendly or other activities for him to participate in.

    OK with the income question.

    some suggestions
If you use this to get data to present to casinos, etc. to join, or remain in member rewards here are a few suggestions with more specific questions ( I have more but don’t want to make it too long):

How often do you come to Las Vegas? (non-locals only)
       Once a year
       Two -Four times a year
       Five+ times a year

Do you use the MRB when you are I Las Vegas?
      (yes/no)

How do you use the MRB?
–I specifically look for new/different Las Vegas attractions with MRB offers
–I occasionally refer to MRB when I am in town and want to try / go to some place different
      - I rarely use it, I know where I want to go and a coupon doesn’t make too much of a difference.
      - What is the MRB ?

    Reader Poll
I know many people (me included) who have a second residence in LV. How about an option? Las Vegas is a second residence.

where do they live--polls, not people
I wanted to read that previous poll but couldn't find it. Are polls archived in a particular place?

How is income data used? I've always wondered; many hotel and restaurant surveys have this. I always click the "prefer not to answer" option.

Jersey Jeff and Ronald Z. beat me to some good suggestions.

For age range, just end it with 80+. Maybe some scooter/medical supply companies would offer something? "We require power mobility devices [or other medical] while in Las Vegas." (Probably not for this poll, but a future one with specific coupon preferences.)

  • Jackie Jun-05-2019
    Nevada
"I live in Nevada" is fine but why not list the counties under that statement for the respondent to check. You could start offering coupons in other towns like Laughlin, Jean, Reno, Mesquite, and Pahrump. Many who work in Clark County live in Pahrump.

  • Dave Jun-05-2019
    Travel
Options that indicate how a person gets to Vegas might be useful:

I live in the Vegas area.
Vegas is a day trip by car and I’m home that night.
I usually arrive by car but stay overnight.
I fly in - I live in North America.
    I fly in - I live in ____.

  • Kara C Jun-05-2019
    Suggestions, since you asked
I think it'd be more helpful to delineate between under/over 21 instead of going for 20-29, especially for your intended audience.

DO YOU TRAVEL TO LAS VEGAS SOLO?

    Frequency of visits for non-locals.
    Gambling budget specifically.
Do you rent a car? Bus? Monorail? Just stay in one spot?
Do resort fees influence your hotel choice?

    Multiple feedback
    1. Gender: We need more than just "male" & "female" because of transgenderism. But "nonbinary/gender fluid" isn't used or understood by most folks. So add "transgender male" & "transgender female".
    2. Residence: Make it "I live in or near Las Vegas" & "I do not . . ."
    3. Age: Forget the deciles. 20 doesn't matter; only 21 matters. Make the top group "65+". Split 21-64 at age 45 to ID middle-agers.
    4. Income: Should be omitted; the input won't be accurate. Many low-income folks won't want to tell their income, so they'll either overstate it or won't answer.
    5. How Traveled to Vegas: Dave forgot to include "By bus". (That's how I get there.)
    6. Marital Status: Not the best thing or way to ask. More useful would be to ask whether you come alone, vs. with a spouse, vs. w/ 1+ kids, vs. w/ both spouse & kids, vs. w/ a romantic/sexual partner, vs. w/ 1+ friends (or non-romantic/sexual associates).
    7. Add: Main purpose of visit. Recreation vs. Business vs. Convention vs. Other reason.

    Married or not
I agree with being married or not can have an influence on how coupons are used like two-for-one offers. Also, having kids if underaged have an effect on what kind of offers, whether non-gaming or maybe even just getting a discount coupon for places like the M&Ms store or the like. My guess is most MRB users are closer to retirement than having little kids though, but then nothing wrong in appealing to the younger demographic either.

    Demographics
    Add unemployed and retired.

Add gambling yes/no; if yes, type of gambling: slots; video poker; blackjack -- 3:2 only, 6:5 if 3:2 not available, never play 6:5, what's 6:5?; other table games; craps; live roulette -- single 0, double 0, triple 0, machine roulette; live bingo/keno, bingo/keno slots.

    It's really the combo
The results, x% male, 100-x% female, for example reveals very little unless it is combined with age, location and income (individual or family). And I agree that married or single should also be combined. I understand the unwillingness of many to include income, and the number of income choices seems a little invasive. Maybe knowing someone's income isn't so important if we make the assumption that anyone that visits LVA AND gambles in Vegas has a sufficient (in their mind) income to allow them to do so.

    Disabled
I would love to know how many disabled people visit Vegas and how often.

With all of the extra fees it has really changed if I can do a trip since I pretty much need valet parking and I like to casino hop.
