Q:

Reader Poll Preview: What’s your favorite thing to do downtown?

A:

An upcoming QoD on downtown got us thinking about it, so we're revisiting a poll we ran so long ago that half the attractions have changed. We know lots of you spend time downtown, so please offer your suggestions for additional things to do along Fremont Street and beyond in the comment boxes.

Fremont Street Experience light show

Zipline

Cabana Room coupon at El Cortez

Poker at Binion’s

Mob Museum

Shark Tank pool at Golden Nugget

Beers at 777 Brewery, Main Street Station

Fear the Walking Dead attraction

Balcony at the D overlooking Fremont Street

Street performers

Free photo with $1 million at Binion’s

Free entertainment on Third Street Stage

Fremont East bar and entertainment scene

Sigma Derby at the D

Downtown  Container Park

Main Street Station buffet

video poker at Four Queens

Hugo’s Cellar

Neon Museum

Driverless shuttle

Banger Brewing tour

Oscar’s at the Plaza

eSports at Neonopolis

People watch

Weigh yourself at the Heart Attack Grill

Commune with the Blarney Stone at the D

Eat at White Castle

I can’t stand the scene on Fremont Street, so I no longer go downtown

I’ve never been downtown.

    All the cliches
Sometimes I think these poll are written on autopilot. How about:

Eating at Vic & Anthony's at the Golden Nugget
    Playing Roulette at El Cortez
Doing the LVA "free play coupon" tour
    Bingo at the Plaza
    Breakfast at Eat
The Shark Tank at the Golden Nugget
Watching people in the Four Queens from the "balcony" booths at the Magnolia

  • Doug Bergman Jul-11-2018
    also
coupon running, playing poker at the Golden Nugget.

The Laundry Room @ the Commonwealth - assuming it's still there.

    Survey Suggestion
Playing VP at the Boar Bar in MSS. Not only is it the most beautiful bar in LV (my opinion), but it has full pay VP and really good long tenured bartenders.

  • Robert Byrne Jul-11-2018
    Also
    Top of Binion's Steakhouse
    Andiamo at the D
Staying in a Spa Suite at the Golden Nugget - a real luxury experience
Brent beat me to it to mention Vic and Anthony's at the Golden Nugget

    Downtown
Binion's BBQ, great food at giveaway prices, 10/6 DDB at 4 Queens bars. Second street grill at the Fremont one of the few places that doesn't have everything a la carte, scratch cards at MSS, great food at California noodle house.

    Better odds downtown
In the last several years I have found that my favorite thing to do downtown is to gamble with much better odds than the strip. This is specifically 3/2 Black Jack and Video poker pay tables that are much better. Downtown with the "real" odds makes me feel like I not being taken advantage of.

Also agree with the other reader below, about the LVA "free play coupon" tour. Last year used the Match play coupon at the Golden Gate and won $400 on Black Jack. Can't hate that!

Tying into that "coupon" theme also used the Binon 25% off coupon.

    Music
Not sure if it's on the 3rd street stage, which you did list, but I usually only go downtown if there's a free concert. Usually next to the D.

    Poll Preview
I normally don't go downtown unless I have guests (which is rarely) that are interested and insist that I take them and play tour guide. However, after reading your suggestions and the comments, I can't wait to go and see what I've been missing. Thanks

    More
Playing 3:2 5 dollar blackjack at the Tez. Also maybe instead of saying just the light show just walking and enjoying the light show and all the street acts under it. That includes things like the poster painter and the Sax player. To me it is the whole package when I walk up and down downtown.

  • Llew Jul-11-2018
    Faves
BARGE and EMBARGO (Barge's "little brother")

Until recently, I would have added "playing Pickem at the Fremont." Fie on you, Fremont, for ruining my favorite VP game.

My favorite thing to do downtown is get a shrimp cocktail at the Freemont

  • Susan Johnson Jul-11-2018
    coupon run
I agree with Llew "Until recently, I would have added "playing Pickem at the Fremont." I didn't play for long, but it was fun! We always added that to our coupon run downtown, ending with the buffet at MSS.

  • Susan Johnson Jul-11-2018
    shopping
We enjoy stopping at the Gamblers General store once in a while.

  • Roy Furukawa Jul-11-2018
    The Cal
Well for me it's to get some Hawaiian food at the California Hotel along with island favorites like Fosselman's ice cream and some beef jerky. Also always a good treat to see the crapshooter 'Golden Arm' wall of fame and play a little craps there. I mean it's the mecca of craps, right? I haven't been there in a long while, so I am remembering why I used to go downtown, but I also liked @Brent's add-on list though. I remember the bingo at the Plaza and the free play coupon tour sounds like a fun sober pub crawl style thing to do.

  • Jahnke Jul-11-2018
    Missing Mermaids
My favorite thing to do downtown no longer exists. It used to be going to Mermaids. Mermaids was the most fun casino that ever existed--they really knew how to show you a good time in there. Mermaids was the main reason I went downtown. So sad that it's now gone.

  • Jul-11-2018
    Photos of Old Downtown
My favorite thing to do downtown is to look at the photos of Old Downtown that line the walls & back corridors of the east half of the El Cortez. Even though they're B&W photos, they detail the marquees created during the heyday of casino facade architecture, in all their glory. They are so worth looking at, because nothing built during the last 50 years comes close.

  • Jul-11-2018
    IceCream at the Cal
Roy, the ice cream served at the Cal is not Fosselman's (which is a Los Angeles-area creation) but rather is Lappert's, a Hawaiian creation. That Hawaiian connection is kind of the whole point, as the Cal is the #1 destination of group junkets from Hawaii. How in the world did you confuse a German/Jewish label with a Hawaiian one? :-)

    More for Downtown poll
    1. Dance on the bar at Hogs & Heifers with the bartenders, 2. Enjoy a cigar, pizza, and craft brew at Chicago Brewing Co. in Four Queens, 3. Play live poker at Golden Nugget, 4. Paradise Buffet at the Fremont, 5. Eat Hawaiian fast food at Aloha Specialties in the California, 6. Take photos of vintage/restored neon signs
