Question of the Day - 03 July 2019

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: What food types would you like us to include in the new edition of Eating Las Vegas?

A:

We're gearing up to start producing the new (eighth) edition of Eating Las Vegas 2020 (Eating Las Vegas 2019 can be found here), our annual restaurant guide. For those who don't own a copy, the guide has full descriptions of Las Vegas' "Essential 52" eateries, as picked and independently reviewed by the city's top food writer, John Curtas.

The book also contains chapters on notable steakhouses, buffets, and French and Chinatown restaurants, along with numerous briefly annotated lists of "Additional Recommendations" categorized by specific types of food and beverages: burgers, desserts, Italian, pizza, Mexican, tacos, sushi, chain restaurants, special diets, wine drinking, and late night.

Next week's poll will survey any additional categories you'd like to see us include in the 2020 edition of ELV. Remember, this is the poll preview, so you can't vote here and we're looking only for other categories of food, not what you like to eat (no matter how hungry you are when you're reading this). Thanks as always for your suggestions on how to improve the LVA polls.

Here are the new choices so far:

American

barbecue

bars and taverns

Cajun/Creole

Caribbean

casino food courts

cocktails

deli

German

Greek and Middle Eastern

Indian

kosher

outdoor dining

romantic

seafood

South American

tapas

Thai

vegetarian/vegan

    Sushi
We can't get good sushi where I live, so it's a priority when I travel, especially when I'm in Vegas.

  • Don the Dentist Jul-03-2019
    BBQ
    Love to see the results.

    Aim the book at tourists
I don't think locals need it so I would aim the book at tourists if I were you. That said, I'd include downtown (Fremont east/west). As a local I get enough food info from Eater Vegas (https://vegas.eater.com/) and Yelp (https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Restaurants&find_loc=Las+Vegas%2C+NV) to spend $ on a book that may highlight expensive restaurants in casinos that charge for parking. There are too many other great options for my stomach & my wallet!

    Leprechaun
A really BIG Salad bar WITHOUT any preservatives on any of the items - especially lettuce. It makes me sick and I haven't been able to eat a salad in Vegas in years!

  • Marilyn Rands Jul-03-2019
    Shellfish Allergy
How about rating buffets for people with a shellfish allergy. Most buffet rating are based on their shellfish. That means nothing to me as I can't eat it. A rating about how careful they are with cross contamination would be helpful.

    Food choices.
Middle Eastern would include halal food? Some diets require gluten-free choices.
Gimme Tacos, burritos and rice! No frejoles, por favor.Ona Negra Modello. Gracias.

    Off the entree path
Whenever I see these categories, I think of entrees; and I get tapas, too. But how about a category for Sides, and one for Appetizers

  • JP Jul-03-2019
    Coffee and pastry
Starbucks is always around somewhere, but it would be nice to know about cafes that specialize in coffee and pastries and don't mind if you linger awhile. Something nicer than the typical food court atmosphere, which basically is no atmosphere.

    A Vegas essential
Best Place to Stagger Into at Three in the Morning After Having Gotten Slaughtered and Consequently Needing to Pay For Your Meal With Only the Loose Change in Your Pockets.

As far as I'm concerned, there IS no other relevant category.

  • Roy Furukawa Jul-03-2019
    Sushi
I didn't see it, but sushi is everywhere in Las Vegas and not all of it is great, so having a guide to find the best places for it is a must!

    Polish Food
    ‘Dziękuję’ (jen-koo-yea) Meaning: Thank you

Also, how about eating in areas away from the Strip or Downtown?

  • jeepbeer Jul-03-2019
    extended hours?
not sure how to categorize this - for one of the cities that never sleeps there are some dead times food-wise, like a really good steak at 2pm Tuesday, or another really good steak at 4am Wednesday?

  • Candace Corbani Jul-03-2019
    Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt
Gets hot in the summertime. What about offering up some ice cream and yogurt stands. Is that Lemon Custard stand still on Sahara?

  • Packrat1 Jul-03-2019
    Eating Las Vegas
How about section on Keto,Paleo, or low carb Restaurants

  • Straski Jul-04-2019
    Memory
It is funny to tell someone my most memorable dish in Las Vegas was about 23 years ago eating at the Excalibur buffet and tasting their potato soup. I went back twice for a total of three bowls. It was awesome. Have not been back since - didn't want that temptation to overcome me again.
