Question of the Day - 19 May 2021

Q:

Poll Preview: What are your favorite casino names?

A:

This poll idea was suggested by Martin V., a frequent contributor to LVA.com. He writes, "From today’s QoD [on Boyd's resurrection of the Stardust brand], there seems to be a lot of interest in casino names. Maybe this could be a future poll of some kind: What is your favorite casino name, past or present? Or what is the worst casino name of all time? (THEhotel springs to mind)."

Pending poll-preview opinions, we're opting for favorite over least favorite casino names. Naturally, the least favorite (or worst) will wind up at the bottom of the results. Also, to help us cover the many many casino names in Las Vegas history, we're ordering them chronologically, which is a lot of information in its own right.

Our list is comprehensive, but we're sure it isn't exhaustive (and our order might be slightly off). We've ignored small short-lived casinos (such as the Barrel House Club, 1934-1938, and the Golden Slot, 1954-1958), and we didn't include Henderson or North Las Vegas casinos; there are already 136 names. But please let us know in the comments which important Vegas casinos we've inevitably, though inadvertently, overlooked or misplaced.

And by the way, again, as with many of our history answers, we found the website VintageLasVegas.com to be invaluable for this list. If you're at all into Las Vegas history and haven't found your way to this site, we highly recommend you do.

    My favourite
    GoldDiggers casino from The Simpsons

They have the loosest craps in town

  • Kevin Lewis May-19-2021
    My faves
Are the ones I've made up--among them the Garbagecana, Slipping Silver, and Caesars Outhouse. Oh, almost forgot the drunk sign guy and the Splam.

    Circa
With all the buzz it’s been creating, both before it opened and since, how could you omit Circa?

Then again, you also forgot Wynn (and Encore). And Hooters.

Looks like you should be reconsidering your sources. Or reconsider alphabetizing the list.

  • Bob May-19-2021
    More
Vegas world, da Quad, Terrible's, Silver 7’s. Alphabetize please !

  • Wally May-19-2021
    Slots A Fun
Did I miss Slots A Fun? Remains my favorite name. My first gambling in a casino, age 17 with fake ID

  • Edso May-19-2021
    Aztec Inn?
What, how could the iconic Aztec Inn, the little hole in the wall casino/motel that used to be over by the Strat, not be listed?

  • Ronald May-19-2021
    The Sands?
How did the Sands not make this list??

  • Avram Caspy May-19-2021
    One more
    Foxy's Firehouse

My favorite has to be the JOLLY TROLLEY--always lost there but the 99 cent giant hamburgers dulled the pain. Also, don't forget the casino named in honor of Jane Fonda--the EX-CAL-LIBBER.

  • Scott May-19-2021
    Duplicate/Missing
Monte Carlo not listed, also Bally's is on there twice

  • Pat Higgins May-19-2021
    Big Tex
Interesting poll. However I must admit that it issue absolutely of no interest to me. Sorry. Still hope it will be of interest to others.

  • O2bnVegas May-19-2021
    worst of the list
Sal Sagev sounds like a digestive disorder.

Apologies to whomever this person is.

  • Dave in Seattle. May-19-2021
    Sal Savev.
    Yeah, that's catchy.
When was The Silverbird? I remember the beautiful sign!

I like derrogatory names.Mother goose mamma, Squeezers, Golden Butt Nugget, 4 Queers, The Cotex. OK, not that much Dave.

  • Diane Crosby May-19-2021
    names
Wasn't the little casino building behind the Westward Ho just called "The Ho" ?

  • bobd46 May-19-2021
    Royal Inn
The Royal Inn (which eventually became Debbi Reynolds among others) was the home of the great Royal Dixie Jazz Band!

  • JerryD May-19-2021
    Another few
How about Casino Royale? Also Silverton and its previous name, Boomtown. South Point's original name was South Coast. Also Palazzo, Planet Hollywood, Linq.

  • Ray May-19-2021
    a couple of things
First, it's a NAME question. So, as many others have said, alphabetize them. Chronology means nothing. Maybe if you had done that, you would have caught some of the several that were pointed out to you. I thought of Foxy's Firehouse, the predecessor to Holy Cow, but someone already mentioned that. I'll follow with another comment

  • Ray May-19-2021
    Why not worst?
Just because a name doesn't get a favorite vote doesn't mean it's the worst. Most names would be neutral and not get votes, but it would take something really bad to get a "worst" vote. In fact, some places that will get a "favorite" vote might get a "worst" vote from someone else.

  • JerryD May-19-2021
    more
Wild Wild West, King 8; You say you're not including Henderson or NLV, but a lot of them made the list. How about Green Valley Ranch? Maybe a future poll could be least favorite names.

  • jay May-19-2021
    all in a name
Sal Sagev = Las Vegas backwards, not a persons name.

Casino Royale was missed as was the MonteCarlo, HardRock and Virgin

I would vote that the list gets pared down to "casinos" and we eliminate places that are just slot parlors or perhaps make them into a separate Poll otherwise your going to need to add every gas station and supermarket onto the list.

I would also vote for the list to be alphabetized

  • O2bnVegas May-19-2021
    the joke is on me
Thanks, Jay. I didn't catch that about Sal Sagev. Still bad. I'd almost expect to hear a loud burp when entering the place. 'Nuff said there. LOL.

    A great loss
I always thought as I visited the casino that LADY LUCK was the coolest name for a casino and I was saddened when it closed (especially for its prime rib dinner!). I can't understand how "the D" could compare in any way as a name for a casino.

  • O2bnVegas May-19-2021
    OK, favorite
    Favorite names (no particular order):
    1. Casino Royale. James Bond, Monaco, royalty...though the Vegas casino is anything but.
    2. Mirage.
    3. Treasure Island.

    UN-favorites
    1. Sal Sagev--Pack the Pepto Bismol.
    2. Virgin. Dumb name for a Vegas casino. Just wrong!
    3. The D. Just...nothing there. Too plain.
    4. M. Not even a The" to the name? I guess "The M" sounds too much like "The End" or "The Enema".

None of these reflect how much (or how little) I like the property.

    Before MSS
Before Main Street Station there was Holiday (Inn) International and Park Hotel/Casino. They were short lived, but they lasted longer than Lucky Dragon.

  • NeonGlo May-19-2021
    What's in a name?
Terrible's is the best and the worst; it's just fun. But Mirage is great because it's classy yet a distinct warning: unreality awaits, luck and wealth melt away as soon as seen...

  • Hoppy May-19-2021
    Horseshoe forever
Who could forget the mystical Tangiers! Did I miss the Hilton

  • Dave_Miller_DJTB May-19-2021
    Why so many commissions?
I already pointed out a couple obvious omissions, but reading the other responses, I gotta say, Holy Crap! Why so many ommisions? And why are some DELIBERATELY left off?

    >> We've ignored small short-lived casinos...
Why? The "short-lived" examples you listed, lived longer than Luckt Dragon did!

    >> And we didn't include Henderson or North Las Vegas casinos...
Again, why? You did include SOME Henderson and North LV casinos, so why are a couple select few being ignored?

About 10 years ago, I worked with Mike Shackleford to redesign the maps for his Wizard Of Odds website. The criteria he used was: 1) It had to have at least one table game and 2) It had to have a hotel. Pretty simple.

If anybody is interested in these maps, I have them on my website, along with descriptions of a couple casino games I invented. People tell me they love the maps for their simplicity and elegant design.

    Get them here: http://www.DaveMillerGaming.com

    Did not see
    Slots A Lot

    Mr. Sy’s
I remember my mom playing in this little slot house across from the Stardust. Westward Ho is a gem of a name, but likely because it gives off a whole different vibe than its original definition.

  • Gregory May-20-2021
    Station Casinos
I am not sure what came first, but I always thought it odd that Boyd named Main Street Station as it did. I used to assume this property was part of the other "Stations" casinos (i.e. Boulder Station, Palace Station), but it's not and never has been.
