Question of the Day - 15 January 2020

Q:

Poll Preview: What are your favorite Strip hotel-casinos?

A:

Three years ago, we ran a poll on your favorite locals casinos (won by the Orleans, followed by South Point, Gold Coast, Sam's Town, and Red Rock). Looking back at the archives, we discovered that we've never run one on your favorite Strip casinos.

Yes, yes, we know that with resort fees, paid parking, lousy gambling, and the herd on the street, many of you avoid the Strip at all costs. Still, we also assume that you do have a favorite Strip hotel-casino, even if it's just your fondest memory of the last time you were there. The list includes only resorts that currently exist, not ones that used to be. And there's an extra choice at the bottom.

If you have any quibbles with our list, let us know. The poll itself will run a week from today.

From north to south (and yes, we're including Stratosphere, which won the poll we ran on the question last year handily, 58% in favor of and 42% against):

Strat

Sahara

Circus Circus

Encore/Wynn

Palazzo/Venetian

Treasure Island

Mirage

Casino Royale

Harrah's

LINQ

Flamingo

Cromwell

Caesars Palace

Bellagio

Bally's

Paris

Cosmopolitan

Planet Hollywood

Aria

Park MGM

New York-New York

MGM Grand

Tropicana

Excalibur

Luxor

Mandalay Bay

I no longer go to the Strip, due to paid parking, bad gambling, and a rip-and-tear vibe.

    Favorite Strip casinos
The Palazzo and Venetian are favorites of mine. They are beautiful buildings with friendly staff and good shows. And they have plenty of free parking (rare!) that is easy to get to and get out of when you leave. Plus you can park there and walk to other nearby locations. One of the best things I like about them is they are not part of the other huge Vegas empires (Harrah's and MGM).

    My Faves
I choose Flamingo for my favorite, only because I got married there in 05...I now avoid the Strip at all costs, but have great memories of alot of the places and still miss walking around taking in the sights, just no good to gamble there!

    Additonial possible answer
I only visit the strip for the restaurants and shopping, Never gamble or stay there.

    Need new poll
I think you need to do a new poll of favorite locals casinos. Somehow I doubt that the Orleans (or any Boyd property) would win now.
And how about a poll of favorite Downtown casinos?

  • Doug Bergman Jan-15-2020
    another response
I occasionally go to the Strip if I have a specific reason to do so, say if I have tickets to Diana Ross etc, but I don't have a specific preference. My favorite casinos have all been leveled or converted to Walgreens.

    Favorite
for gambling we always end up at Casino Royale, Planet Hollywood is another favorite that we go back to due to hubby winning $6,300.00 there a few years back (never been able to recreate it!! ) We really enjoyed staying at the Palazzo in December but location is not my favorite, we never did get down to MGM end of strip (only there for 4 days and it was cold and rainy). Palazzo offers free parking but pretty sure that is incorporated in their resort fee which is the highest we have ever paid!

    It's a PREVIEW
It seems like all the comments (other than the first one) so far are poll answers, not suggestions. Save them 'til next week! My question is, are you only taking a poll on casinos ON Las Vegas Blvd? So, non-local, near Strip places like Gold Coast, Rio, Tuscany aren't to be included? And even South Point and M are too far south?

    Indiana
Previous ones How about Westward Ho, Silver City, the ols Slots O Fun. I know this goes way back but were still some of my favorites.

  • Kurt Wiesenbach Jan-15-2020
    Favorite strip location
I know it's off strip, but the Hard Rock to me is the same as a strip casino. I would vote for that, as it has the best ambiance and drink comps. We'll see how it shakes up once it converts, probably won't be the same.

  • Randall Ward Jan-15-2020
    favorite
frequent visitor but hard to pick one because of the price difference

  • O2bnVegas Jan-15-2020
    separate
Adam has a point. But I will guess that after a few tries most of us begin to favor a place we like to stay most and play most in tandem. That's how I'll vote.

  • AndyM Jan-15-2020
    Only if I had too
The Venetian for the free parking and I like Chicken Now at the food court.
Then wonder to Casino Royal for a little budget playing.
Little shout out to Indiana. Slos-O-Fun was awesome back when.

    NONE!
Sorry but the thought of being out of pocket $70-ish per night before I set foot in the room because of parking and "Resort Fees" makes me wanna vomit. Add in 6-5 BJ and you can have the Strip hotels and do with them what you want. When my family stays in town we either stay at The Orleans or La Quinta Inn on Sahara near the Red Rock (nice place - quiet and has a darn good breakfast included).
I have been coming to Vegas for 35+ years. I loved staying at The Stardust and other places on the Strip. But now that the bean counters and "suits" are screwing people over The Strip is a place I see when coming into town and going home and rarely in between.

  • Tim Clark Jan-15-2020
    locals fan
I don't do the strip anymore they are to greedy charging for everything. Wait till they figure a way to charge for using the elevator to get to your room.

  • Kenneth Jan-15-2020
    No possible answer
favorite for gaming, restaurants, shows, buffers, nightlife, memories - I have different answers for all of these.

  • Adam Cohen Jan-15-2020
    What is best part 2
Reno Faoro I am kind of a play politician in that I serve on the city council. I think my answer is less about that then I overthink it. Same with restaurants reviews is for the money or just quality. Anyway great discussions here.

Any that don't charge for parking
I would like a poll option for "Any that don't charge for parking". In the years since paid parking was added I've only paid for parking once, and that was when a disabled friend visited me (I live in LV) and it was worth paying for parking to get him closer to where we were going. But that was a disaster because the machine was broken so - never again will I pay to park. We have so many other great options like TI, Tropicana, Venetian, Wynn - who needs MGM & Caesars?

  • rokgpsman Jan-16-2020
    Free parking on the Strip
Parking fees to visit a Strip casino are an insult but don't forget about a good way to eliminate many of those fees. You can get a no-fee MLife mastercard credit card that will allow you to self-park for free at all of the MGM properties such as Bellagio, MGM, Luxor, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Mirage, NYNY and others. The card isn't difficult to get and having it gives you "Pearl" level in the MGM players card system. Pearl level and higher get free self-parking. This gives you many more places to park for free. NOTE- this doesn't include free valet parking. I don't know if Harrah's (Caesars Entertainment Corp) has a credit card that does this, would be nice if they did.

    Fremont St for us
We come 2-3 times a year and never set foot on the strip unless we have newbies that have never been. Way too much walking, way too expensive. We love the Nugget downtown but stay there less and less because of the resort fees. Hate to pay another $150 at check out. 4 Queens, Fitz, California get our business

Thanks for the recent info on Boyd properties changing their comp program. I plan on visiting Vegas in May and Was looking to stay at a Boyd property, but after reading about recent changes I will stay and gamble somewhere else.
