Question of the Day - 02 June 2021

Q:

Poll preview: What would you like to see done with the Fontainebleau site?

A:

This is an interesting poll suggested by long-time LVAer Toni A. She writes, "Not that we have any control over it! But I'm genuinely curious what LVA regulars would like to see built on the site that's now Fontainebleau. And not just good ideas, but what would inspire LVA readers to make a concerted effort to go there and patronize if it were to be built?"

As you'll see, the selections are predicated on two general options: 1) Finishing F-blue; and 2) tearing down/imploding the abandoned hulk, which might be necessary if it's unsalvageable after nearly 15 years sitting in the elements, and starting all over.

The official poll question (at least so far) is, What kind of property could be built on the current site of the Fontainebleau and the former site of Wet 'n Wild that you would definitely visit and patronize?

We encourage you to use your imaginations (and possibly senses of humor) to come up with more choices for the poll that will run a week from today.

    Out side the box
    Two outside the box ideas
One is a public park just green space I know this presents a security risk and no profit But it would be different and you could set up food trucks and small shows just a place to take a break
Second, while Vegas is no longer looking for families and I do not have one. They can not I believe ignore the market could someone build a family-friendly complex where gambling is tucked in a corner or not even present. I would not go to that but others might

    Nothing...Or,
I liked the brewery angle, in fact next week when the actual poll runs, I may choose that. Meanwhile, what about the World's largester gift shop...or at least, the largest gift store (east of Las Vegas Blvd.).

  • William Will Jun-02-2021
    Los Angeles East
    Homeless tent city.

    Where is this?
The assumption here is that everyone knows where this is. Not all of us do.

  • Kevin Lewis Jun-02-2021
    The obvious choice
The world's largest Chuck E. Cheese, complete with circus acts, exploding tigers, pirate battles, etc., in the finest Vegas tradition.

I notice that the choice, "Another huge friggin' casino, because Vegas doesn't have enough of them" is absent.

    Land Use
Most municipalities require owners to have a building commitment. Ie buy the land and in 6-18 months you need to have a complete structure that complies with xyz. So you go bankrupt then the land gets forfeited back to the municipality to be sold again. I would rather see this happen as a funding option rather than an increase in city/county taxes.

The beauty of Vegas is that has never been one stifled by heritage. Blow up the old, build the new and reinvent itself. Keep people coming back to see whats new.

Casino owners don't want new competition but I would like to see a new foreign operator come in and shake up the corporate Triple 0, 6/5 and parking regime.

The masses came to Vegas as it was cheap - cheap rooms, cheap food, and free entertainment. The reality was they blew though their budgets gambling, eating expensive steaks, and every other form of debauchery. With the upfront cost for 3 days now the same as a 7 day all inclusive on a beach people will go elsewhere

    Implosion
I second Thomas's suggestion - he beat me to it! It's been an eyesore on the Strip for more than enough years already.

    #1 Option...
Turn it into a landing site for our intergalactic visitors.

  • Reno Faoro Jun-02-2021
    EYE SORE
ACTIVITY ZONE ? OVERSIZED BLANKET ? JAIL , DETENTION CENTER , WITH NO APPEALS OR EARLY RELEASES !!

    F-Blue Site
Build the Stardust, but in a mirror image of when it was across the street (and a little bit south).

  • Hobbs Jun-02-2021
    Leave It As Is
Have Gamblers Anonymous meetings therin. A stark reminder, this is what Vegas will do for you.

  • jeaninemb Jun-02-2021
    Possible for F'Blue Space
A combination of an outdoor park with desert plants and an activity zone. It would take care of most of the non-gambling activities outdoor and indoor, and provides a bit of revenue-generating items indoors.

"Harry Reid Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant".
Since Las Vegas is "on a roll" after voting to re-name McCarran Airport after Harry Reid, former Democratic Senate Majority Leader, I suggest they keep it going.

i propose that the very centrally located land be put to excellent ecological use by building the "Harry Reid Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant".

The tie-in is perfect, they both would be full of $XXX.

    Silly options
On the incredibly silly side: implode the thing, then paint a target on the ground. Folks doing sky diving could aim for it and then go on to the casinos. Not a complete drop zone, just a landing site for jumpers. I could see Target (the store) wanting in on it :-) Another silly suggestion - disney-like rides but for adults only. Only open from dusk til 2 am ish.

    Pragmatic View
The cost of the land plus demolition probably precludes a single level/story use (eg water, amusement park) without heavy subsidization (eg for public park, airport parking). Vertical development of revenue producing uses includes hotel, hotel/casino, condo and timeshare towers. A multi-floor retail/entertainment structure would be trying to compete with Fashion Show or trying to avoid the disaster of Neonopolis. I vote for finishing the Fontainebleau.

  • Howard M Jun-02-2021
    Fontainebleau site?
Make it a free public parking lot with free shuttle service to all the LV properties that are starting to charge guests -- even locals -- again.

  • Roy Furukawa Jun-02-2021
    Multi-use
Lots of good ideas here, but if there were ways to make it a multi-use where it can transform from one thing during the day like food trucks/microbrews/open air shops to more a nightclub feel at night would be good. When visiting Tokyo, Japan, certain areas always seems this way to me. Daylight it's got a business/shopping city-ish feel, but at night it gets a much more adult/drinking/entertainment feel to it. Maybe because it also has all the lights/video boards like Vegas.

  • O2bnVegas Jun-02-2021
    For big and little kids.
A complex including miniature golf, bumper cars, trampolines, maybe a zoo.

Or a race car course for the big boys (wasn't there one at the
    Sahara once upon a time?).

    Candy

    repurpose of property
    1)put up a parking lot.
2)put in a stoner's paradise for all the cannabis imbibers. natural landscape w/misters and shade. a water park, game arcade, lounges galore serving various cannabis items and of course a munchie type food court. tax it heavily. they will come.
3)a multi-level drive thru mecca featuring any and everything imaginable from the comfort of your uber/taxi/limo/car.

    Low Income Housing Site
Clark County officials should condemn this site and take control of the site. Seek federal assistance and funding to construction low income housing and community and social programs to address the issues facing certain local residents of Clark County. Presently, Las Vegas does not need any new casinos, in my opinion. However, there are many social issues that need to be addressed so that many people can just survive.

  • Jackie Jun-02-2021
    Welcome to fantasy island
Roy had the best idea which was done in some major US cities but every city actually owned the land and only zoned or permitted the day/night use of the land. Every condo/casino lender has looked at this property and ran away from it at mach 2. Let it get foreclosed on or go bankrupt and let the city take it over. One thing Vegas is lacking is a decent night life near the strip. Even put in a Metro sub station and get some well known night clubs in and a dance club for the under 21 crowd. Clubs could double as eateries during the day.

    Implode it!!!
This eyesore and it’s horribly placed parking structure need to all come down. With the price of steel and copper, it’s probably worth more “in parts” now anyway. After we clear the rubble we build the worlds largest marijuana park where the consumption of and being under the influence of marijuana is 100% legal. We could have permanent kitchen stands built for local chefs to serve those with the munchies… which would be providing income to more local families and more tax dollars to the city! I say we call it PotPark and I know it would be the newest, hottest tourist thing to see and do!

How about building a museum dedicated to the history of LV entertainment and headliners -- like of Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Wayne Newton, Sammy Davis Jr., Tom Jones, as well as shows such as The Follies Bergere, Siegfried And Roy, Jubilee and more?
