Question of the Day - 24 January 2018

Q:

New Reader Poll Preview: Help us perfect next week's poll, please!

A:

Off of an excellent suggestion from X Y, our fiercest LVA Correspondent, we're introducing a new ingredient to our Question of the Day-Reader Poll menu. Seeing as how we're neither perfect nor survey experts, on occasion we miss an opportunity, forget a selection, or simply gaffe the poll answers.

So we're starting a little experiment today by running the poll question and answers in their entirety exactly a week before the new poll is posted, in order to enlist the collective wisdom of and solicit feedback from thousands of QoD readers and poll respondents. If you see something we've overlooked, or have an idea on how we can improve the poll, we encourage you to email us via the QoD submission link below or pop a comment into a comment box.

And thank you for participating.

Here's next week's poll:

With so many visitors annoyed by -- and some refusing to pay -- resort fees tacked on to hotel room rates in Las Vegas, we're curious about how many among you have eschewed the hotels entirely in favor of staying at private rentals, such as Airbnb, VRBO, HomeAway, and the like. You can select as many answers as apply to you, and since Internet-based home-sharing is a fairly new phenomenon, we'd love to hear about your experiences if you've used them and which you like, your reasons for not using them, and whatever else you might have to say about them.

Yes, I've stayed in home-shares in Las Vegas; I prefer the entire home without the owner present.

Yes, I've stayed in home-shares in Las Vegas; I prefer a room in a home with the owner present.

Yes, I've stayed in home-shares, but not in Las Vegas; I'm planning on doing so in Las Vegas in the future.

Yes, I've stayed in home-shares, but not in Las Vegas; I'm not planning on doing so in Las Vegas in the future (please tell us why).

No, I haven't stayed in a home-share, but I'm considering it as an alternative to the hotels.

No, I haven't stayed in a home-share, and I'm not considering it (we'd like to hear your reasons).

    Very Simple Choice
"I have given up on the resort fee nonsense and now (sadly) consider it as part of the room rate." I like Casino Hotels. It's part of the fun of the Vegas experience.(That's my answer to the poll.)

    Home Share
What is the definition of "Home Share"? Not mentioned at all in the intro, then most questions are all asking about "home share".

    Comped Rooms
The way I have been able to avoid these ridiculous fees is to stay in comped rooms at casinos, such as the Palms, that don't charge fees for comped rooms. I am also Diamond with Total Rewards, which allows me to avoid fees at Caesars properties. If I didn't have these options, I would probably just pay the fees or stay at a non-casino hotel. Staying in someone else's house through home-share just feels to weird for me.

    Home Shares
"No, I haven't stayed in a home-share, and I'm not considering it (we'd like to hear your reasons)" We prefer to stay on or near the strip and be pampered at Wynn, or enjoy the energy and different vibes that other properties offer which define the unique experience of visiting Las Vegas.

    New Poll
Don't have a car in Las Vegas, so I stay downtown or comped on the Strip.

    Time Share
I have a timeshare and stay there with no fees.

    Poll
Usually if I'm looking to stay in Vegas I try to use my Timeshare's "open season" rates. I have Hilton Grand Vacations Club, so there are a lot of options of where to stay (even during large conventions), and rates are around $100 a night for a 1 bedroom with a full kitchen (more on the weekends, less on weeknights). I refuse to pay a resort fee, and would rather stay at my timeshare than at a comped room, where I feel I have to gamble a lot to keep the hosts satisfied. I prefer to play randomly and sometimes not at all depending on how the cards are falling (blackjack mostly), so don't like to be tied to one spot for very long. I get offers from a number of casinos for free rooms but have never used one (other than to book (and not stay there) so I can use the free game play or food and beverage credit if the offer is pretty valuable).

Consider adding these or similar chioces
I don't like staying in the home or condo of someone who I don't know, even if they are not present.

I live in a residential condo. I don't like having transients in my building and will not be a transient in another persons condo.

I only stay in hotels that have no resort fee, or are up front with it, and the combined price is acceptable to me.

I got stuck having to pay a hidden resort fee once, and will never do so again.

    No to Home Share
We wouldn't consider home share in Las Vegas as we like to stay on the Strip or Downtown and don't usually hire a car either.

  • Patricia Corwin Jan-24-2018
    Haven't stayed yet
in a home share, but may consider it in the future.

    poll perfection
We rented beach cottages and condos in long ago years, before AirBnB or such outfits. Like AirBnB etc., those were previously occupied many times, cleaned before we arrived, few negative surprises or arrival. One had fleas in the carpet, but a phone call to the realtor took care of that pronto. So yes I would stay in a rental at the beach or ski resort, etc., if the deal was way good compared to local hotel rates, but not in Las Vegas. For me, Las Vegas is a different experience. I want to gamble/drink, then stumble to the room, no driving. I want the housekeeping service, and I won't cook (love room service, being served a quiet meal in my jammies and TV). JMHO.

    Resort Fees at Sout Point
"No, I haven't stayed in a home-share, and I'm not considering it (we'd like to hear your reasons)." My play normally qualifies for comped RFB. I also use mailers for free hotel rooms. If those comps start drying up (end of stay negotiations are not as easy as they used to be), I doubt returning - gambling continues to deteriorate - paying for rooms and all kinds of extra fees would push me to local casinos.

Not considering a home share - casino/hotel experience is part of the fun of Las Vegas. In fact, my favorite casino/hotel (before they killed the VP) was the Hollywood in Tunica. They had rooms that looked down into the casino. We could wake up in the morning and look down to the progressive bar to see if anyone had hit a royal flush overnight!

    Comped
My answer is : No, I haven't stayed in a home-share, and I'm not considering it. It's because I am comped a room and it incudes the resort fee and parking or valet for that matter. I'm not big on staying in other people's houses either and I like the pampering you get at the hotels. I don't think stayin in a house would feel so much like a getaway.
