Question of the Day - 27 August 2020

Q:

Poll Preview: Given the current circumstances, would you be more or less likely to stay at Airbnb and VRBO home-share properties than motels and hotels?

A:

Given the continuing reluctance to travel on the part of many people during the pandemic, as well as the reluctance on the part of most casinos to discount or eliminate resort fees and the potential for crowds in various places around big hotels, we wonder if private home-share rentals might be more attractive to those who really want or need to travel these days.

We ran this poll two and a half years ago; you can see the results here. We're curious whether or not two-plus years, combined with the radically changed world, has altered the perspective of the more than 60% of participants who hadn't stayed in a home-share or hadn't even heard of it way back in early 2018.

The following will be the choices in next week's poll. Please comment if you see a way to improve them.

No, I haven't stayed in a home-share and I'm not considering it.

No, I haven't stayed in a home-share, but I'll definitely look into it as a way to avoid crowds and mandatory mask-wearing in hotels.

No, I haven't stayed in a home-share, but I'm considering it; I can't stand the feeling of being ripped off by resort fees.

Yes, I've stayed in a home-share and I prefer it to hotels, pandemic or not.

Yes, I've stayed in a home-share and I'd feel safer in a hotel; I trust the sanitizing procedures more.

Yes, I've stayed in a home-share and I had a bad experience, so I wouldn't consider it again.

Prior to this poll, I'd never heard of home-sharing.

    Another choice
    I would add another option:
I'm not considering traveling anywhere until the pandemic is under control.

    Another Choice
I'm a local and this poll doesn't apply to me.

Perhaps when home shares are comped
Another choice: I use home shares in other places, but I don't in LV because my rooms are comped.

  • BigJohnBearman Aug-27-2020
    Better choice
I have stayed at Vrbo and Airbnb believe me hotels are a safer and better choice

    airbnb
like someone else said, yes I've stayed there but won't in Vegas

  • Ray Aug-27-2020
    It depends
I stay at both and will continue to stay at both, so pandemic or not, my preference would depend on what kind of deal I got. So if we are not just talking about Vegas none of the choices fits, because we like them both and still like them both.

    Vegas?
I would clarify if this is for all stays away from home, or just in Vegas. I typically try not to stay in either if I can help it, I prefer to find a location with an affiliated timeshare for my Hilton Grand Vacations membership. When I can't I prefer a place with a kitchen, but cost also plays into it. The pandemic hasn't changed my view on where to stay, other than to make me want to travel to Vegas more since there isn't so many people in the way right now. Cleanliness is not guaranteed in either a personal home or a hotel, so people choosing a hotel as a more safer option are being mislead by their assumptions. I have seen a lot of things in a hotel room that I prefer not to think about! Once I pulled back the sheets to find the entire bed covered in hair (like a gorilla slept there the night before), and the front desk said there was nothing they could do. Go figure.

    Addition
Only did airbnb and vrbo a couple of times. They are all right, but there are only 2 getaways I wouldn't consider it Las Vegas and Disney only due to the convenience factor.

    RV's making a comeback
I've seen several news stories about how motorhomes and RV travel has really increased this year due to virus safety worries. You don't have to buy, can rent one for a trip. It doesn't work for everyone, but there's something to be said about traveling someplace on vacation in your own safe RV, keeping it clean for yourself and family, unlike hotel rooms, hallways and elevators with unknown cleaning thoroughness, plus strangers touching surfaces every hour. You can even do some of your meals in the RV if visiting a restaurant isn't something you want to do or if you're at an outdoor location like Yellowstone, Zion and the Smoky Mountains.

    wording
"Yes" and "No" doesn't work with the choices.

    Example:
     - The first option reads "No, I haven't stayed in a home share and I'm not considering it.
     - The last option reads "Yes, I've stayed in a home-share...bad experience...wouldn't consider it again."

One No, one Yes, same opinion.

    Try this:
     - Less likely. I haven't stayed in a home-share, not considering it.
     - Less likely. I've stayed in a home-share, had a bad experience, won't consider it.
     - Less likely. I use home-shares elsewhere, but my rooms are comped in Vegas.
     - Less likely. I've stayed in a home-share, trust hotel safety and sanitizing procedures more.
     - More likely. I'll definitely look into it to avoid crowds and mandatory mask-wearing in hotels.
     - More likely. To avoid being ripped off by hotel resort fees.
     - More likely. I've stayed in a home-share and prefer it to hotels, pandemic or not.
     - Prior to this poll I'd never heard of home-sharing.

    Dumb
    Dumb Question ??

    closer...
02b makes some good points about the wording, however with his format I would suggest a little editing:
     - Less likely. My rooms are comped in Vegas.
     - Less likely. I trust hotel safety and sanitizing procedures more.
In each of these whether or not they have stayed in a home-share before or not. It might be interesting to add that as a part 1 - I have stayed in a home-share or I have not stayed in a home-share.

    My short answer is “neither”
I’ve been going to Las Vegas since the late 80’s and there’s no way I’d travel there these days. The bosses made a huge mistake by opening up too soon. Their short-sided motto: “Make money today, ignore the virus for now, and deal with it later.” Sadly the Strip is filled with people that don’t believe the virus is real, so they’ll bring it back to their hometown and the cycle will continues, unfortunately for a while.

    add to poll
You are missing my number 1 choice. I come to LV to be pampered by staying in a nice hotel (after the chinese virus is over). If I wanted a house, I would stay home.
