Question of the Day - 19 September 2018

Q:

Poll Preview: What criteria do you use for selecting a hotel room?

A:

Our recent poll on your favorite LasVegasAdvisor.com pages prompted us to reconsider a survey we ran several years ago on criteria for choosing hotel rooms when you book a visit to Las Vegas. We’d like to know what information about the hotel itself and its rooms and amenities is most important to you when choosing where you stay? Keep in mind that this is the poll preview; you can't vote here. Instead, we're looking for suggestions on how to improve the poll, which will run starting a week from today.

Lowest price: This is my overriding concern. I’m just looking for the cheapest place to lay my head, which takes priority over location or amenities.

Location is key: I insist on staying downtown, or need to know how far I am from the Strip, or my proximity to the Convention Center, etc.

Is there a mandatory nightly resort fee?

Free parking: There are already so many fees and this is a deal-breaker for me, since I always drive or rent a car.

Does the hotel have a casino or not? (I may be looking for a non-gaming property to stay at.)

Smoker-friendly or no? I need to know, either because I or my partner smokes or because I definitely don’t want to be in a smoky room/hotel.

Are there plentiful on-property dining and entertainment options? I don't like to venture too far afield but don't want to get bored after a couple of nights.

What are the in-room/on-property amenities like (coffee maker, safe, fitness center, nice pool, concierge, etc.)

Is it a family-friendly hotel or not? (I want to know one way or the other.)

Is the hotel pet-friendly or not? (I may want to bring my dog, or else I may want to be sure that the guest before me did NOT bring theirs!)

Value for money: I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest, but for the best value for the money that fits my other key criteria.

Is guaranteed good wifi service available throughout and ports to charge my device(s) etc.? I need to know I can stay connected.

Can I guarantee my chosen room type? I’ve been let down too many times before when I've made a specific request.

Is there good transportation, be it a hotel shuttle, local bus service, Monorail station, etc., so I’m not stranded or dependent on taxis?

    Other considerations
    1) Add to the question of casino or not - are there are variety of games and a good selection of VP with good pay tables
    2) Are the dealers and servers friendly - let's face it, some casinos are just not friendly
    3) Do I feel secure both in the casino and on my way to the parking garage?

    Thanks!

    Close
Is the room close to the strip. I don’t like wasting a lot of time walking to and from the strip!

Special Hotel promotions that include valuable "extras"
I look for special promotions the hotel may offer when booking, particularly during slower seasons. Free buffets, 2 for 1 drink coupons, etc. These can add a LOT of value to the reservation.

Example: This summer I booked the Luxor on a promotion, for a winter trip.

Very good room rates plus TWO breakfast or lunch buffets PER NIGHT. Triple-checked with Luxor and buffets are good for ANY MGM HOTEL with a breakfast or lunch buffet, Aria, Billagio, etc. and there is NO UP-CHARGE. That was the deciding factor when I booked the room.

Will definitely NOT use it every day but if we use it only twice in 5 days, it is worth about over $100. Helps offset the parking and resort fees.

    Spa Bath?
Are there rooms with Spa Baths? We like to have a soak in a spa bath whilst changing from day clothes to evening clothes

We have always been comped at B**d Properties at least up to now (I will be there next week with 2 - 3 day comps back to back with a friend). They also give us each a $10. meal comp. I hope they don't change this. They are all good places and we get this offer quarterly so I believe we could go once a month if we wanted to. We have a great time two or three times a year. I MUST have coffee in the morning even if I have to pay for a coffee in the room. So far we never have. We have always been treated very well at these properties and we love staying there, and have been very loyal to them over at least 18 years We don't eat a lot so we use LVA buffet coupons for almost all meals. We get just what we want without feeling we have to eat a huge meal because we paid a fortune for it. Life is good-may it stay that way! :)

    Hotel Room Criteria
Have I stayed there before and had a good or bad experience? What about room service hours, menu and quality? Is the room noisy because of the night club next door? What are the room furnishings and view for just relaxing, eating/drinking or using wifi when spending time in the room? What is the purpose of the trip...business or pleasure?

    add to amenities
First, I find it amazing that so many of the comments are actually answers included in your preview. That being said, as far as amenities, I'd like to add, is wi-fi included or available (whether it is part of a resort fee, an extra charge, or a free amenity)

  • JP Sep-19-2018
    Sometimes....
....I just want a luxurious hotel that makes me feel coddled. The heck w/ the cost. (The place that does this best is Bellagio, IMO.) If I want the cheapest rate, it's a lot more work to check your offers, compare websites, etc. So, it all depends on how I'm feeling at the time I'm booking.

    Our 3 criteria:
    1. NOT on the strip
    2. Must have good VP pay tables
    3. Then price of room + resort fee

    In room computer hook up
Is in-room computer use complimentary? Can my points be used if not?

I guess this comes under the room amenities item already suggested. But it is a specific issue if my non-gambling husband is along, as he entertains himself catching up online while I gamble. If it isn't free, and if points can't be used for it, I need to know, though I still might pay it, depending.

  • O2bnVegas Sep-19-2018
    nice view
Will I have a nice view from the room?

I think most people who stay on the Strip hope for a Strip view, at least on the first visit. Some don't care. I still want a nice view after all these years, no garage or AC ducts. I pretty much know where I'll have a room with a view without begging/tipping, etc., so those places get my business.

    Compact Property
I don't get around as well as I used to. Quality of gaming and comps are my highest priorities, but I prefer a smaller hotel that requires less walking.

    Gaming and Pool
If $25.00 BJ is 6-5 then it is an automatic reject. In summer, it is important to have a nice pool area.
