Question of the Day - 30 May 2018

Q:

It's been 18 months since we ran our last poll on marijuana and it's nearing a year since recreational cannabis has been legal in Nevada. So we're running a new poll on the subject and you can see our tentative questions below. This is your opportunity to help define the choices via the comment boxes; save the sounding off for the poll itself, which will run a week from today.

A:

I love that it's legal and I partake when I visit.

Non-issue: Compared to parking and resort fees, 6-5 blackjack, and triple-zero roulette, it's the least of my concerns.

    A drunk is a drunk
Whether it's alcohol, weed or drugs, a drunk is a drunk. Intoxicated people do dumb things including robbery, fighting, and using weapons (guns and knives) in public.

    The formula...
Glitz and glitter, credit cards, beautiful women, alcohol, drugs, weed,- mix and stir, what could go wrong? Sounds like a bean counters dream come true.

    Las Cannabis
Kudos to the state of Nevada for getting on board with this tax revenue generating machine. Only a matter of time before most of the state falls in line. I've never noticed the aroma on any trips since it's been legalized. All for it.

    Not at my table please
I sat at a blackjack table with a couple of guys that had been smoking weed. They were very slow making decision and made a lot of wrong decisions. Smoke weed if you want, but please don't gamble at my table!

    Weed
I think hotels and law enforcement should make more of an effort to enforce the law. You cannot smoke in public it is also not allowed in hotels. Most hotel hallways now smell like skunk factories

    Secondhand
It didn’t bother us at first. Live and let live. But secondhand smoke was so pervasive in some places that we began to worry about it effecting workplace drug tests. I figured if I was becoming light headed thc would probably show up on a test. Since our tests are random I was concerned about being called to test that day and failing. We have talked about how to limit exposure. If we have to work too hard we may have to avoid Las Vegas until work isn’t an issue.

    response option
It's not on my radar. I wouldn't have known - or remembered - if you hadn't mentioned it.

    drug testing
    Margaret --

Thanks for the comment. We hadn't considered workplace drug tests. I've added it to the choices for next week's poll. Much appreciated.

    Weed and Impaired Driving
I don't drive in Las Vegas, but as a pedestrian I'm still concerned about adding potheads to the drunks in the driving mix.

  • Dave in Seattle. May-30-2018
    Las Vegas weed.
OK,where are you allowed to indulge? Your own home,I guess. If you smoke weed in your car is that OK?
Drive 6 miles out and have a pot party in the desert?
Public smoking is against the law. What would be the fine?
      I don't like the high,but you go ahead.Food-trip on a buffet.

    Uhhhh...
    What were we talking about?

  • Adam Cohen May-30-2018
    Try it for first time
I have had friends ask me two questions about it. The first has been covered what about 2nd hand exposure and work place drug testing. This is a real concern. Might even be a good question of the day. How much would it take? The second is the opposite and should also be part of the poll. They want to go to Vegas for the first time and try it.

  • Deke Castleman May-30-2018
    first-timers
Adam -- Right you are on both counts. We'll consider the second-hand-smoke question as your QoD submission. And we'll add the idea of trying it for the first time to the poll. Thanks!

    This in via email
For some odd reason, the website will not generate the voting page for me, so please add this to your poll.

I stopped by the Downtown Grand to use one of your coupons and had to run a gauntlet of high people begging for money and trying to sell me product.

    Driving
I'm more worried about drivers using their phones than about people driving while high. I've seen too many people here in CA looking at their phones while driving and having no awareness of the road.

  • O2bnVegas May-30-2018
    What question exactly?
What will be the Q? It seems intuitive, but exactly what will be the poll question? Thanks.

  • May-30-2018
    Positive aspects?
I don't see a possible response that's something like, "Pot isn't legal in my home state, so I think it might be fun to try it while I'm in Vegas." You know, enhanced visitor experience, and all that. I wonder what the effect of toking up might be on the buffet experience.

  • Llew May-30-2018
    Driving
Personally, I don't care who smokes or drinks what, as long as don't do it before or when driving.

It's bad enough dodging drunk drivers; now we have to worry about stoners, too.

    I missed it
Oops, sorry I didn't read the QOD on the QOD page. My bad, got it.

  • [email protected] May-30-2018
    Choice
I think you should have "Non Issue" as a choice. When you add all the rationale it often means that none of the choices work, since the reasons don't line up with my preferred answer.

  • Edward Comstock May-30-2018
    Random work drug tests
I agree with others comments. I can't be exposed to 2nd hand smoke with risk of losing my job. There is no excuse or 2nd chance at my job.

  • jeepbeer May-30-2018
    legal some places . . .
It's legal some places, but not with the Feds. So, if you have a Federal security clearance, you might want to stay away from the second hand smoke.

  • Doug Bergman May-30-2018
    Another slightly different take
I am very much in favor of legalization even though I choose not to enjoy it myself. People should enjoy their new freedom, but do so responsibly and in a way that doesn't disturb or harm other people.

  • Mark Woelfle May-30-2018
    weed
Get rid of the garbage. Vegas likes it because people don't gamble
smart with a clear head. I will pass on going to Vegas for now.

  • Seamans May-30-2018
    marijuana
I pretty much stay downtown. I see it a lot especially with the homeless. they are selling it to the tourists. I have strong opinion against any drug use. Users are idiots who will pay in the end. I am definetly curtailing my visits.

  • Dave May-30-2018
    Odor
I don’t indulge, but love the odor and minor high achieved by *slowly* walking thru a pot cloud.

  • Thomas May-31-2018
    Overwhelming smell in hotels
I can't believe the overwhelming smell of marijuana in hotel hallways during recent visits. I'm a cigarette smoker, so it has to be pretty strong for me to notice.
