Question of the Day - 03 June 2020

Q:

Poll Preview: Will you or won't you wear a face mask to enter a casino?

A:

With casinos reopening all over the country and world, health and safety protocols are now standard throughout the gaming industry. One of the items on all the lists of precautions we've seen in dozens upon dozens of casino-reopening press releases is the face mask.

Only someone just returning from Mars doesn’t know that masks have become politicized during the shutdown, a symbol on the one side of the spectrum of trying to stop the spread of This Thing and on the other side of government control over our lives. In addition, with the infodemic raging alongside the pandemic, we get sometimes-conflicting advice from government officials and medical experts about the efficacy of mask-wearing. Some say masks help. Others say they don't. Still others say they're unhealthy, particularly for elderly people, given the deprivation of oxygen, especially when they're worn all day long (as they are by many employees who interact with the public).

Politics and the infodemic aside, mask-wearing also boils down to people’s individual tolerance for risk, which probably applies more to gamblers entering casinos than the general public.

At some casinos around the country, like at all Costco stores, masks are mandatory for employees and guests. At others, masks are mandatory for employees, but not guests. And here in Nevada, masks will be mandatory for neither employees nor guests, but it will be up to the individual casinos to make their own policies.

So our next poll will be on your attitudes about wearing masks in casinos. Following are the choices; please feel free to amend or add to them for the poll that will run next week.

I will wear a face mask when I go to a casino, whether it’s mandatory for patrons or not.

I will wear a mask if it’s mandatory for guests, but I won’t if it’s not.

I won’t enter a casino where masks for guests aren’t mandatory.

I won’t enter a casino where masks for guests are mandatory.

I won’t enter a casino where masks aren’t mandatory for employees.

I won’t enter a casino where masks are mandatory for employees.

    How about
"I won't enter a Casino until the death rate equals ZERO, even then I will wear an N100 Mask and Nitrile gloves"

  • Dave Jun-03-2020
    Moot point
I don’t plan on going to any casino until at least a couple of weeks after my local casino opens up. And talks around here are, that my local casinos might not open until sometime in July. So by the time I even consider going to a casino, my feelings on this will probably change.

  • Jun-03-2020
    Will this be multiple choice?
Because I won't enter a casino unless both guests and employees must wear a mask. But truly, I won't enter a casino until a vaccine is available.

  • Kevin Lewis Jun-03-2020
    We need these answers too
"I support our glorious leader and won't wear a mask until he does."
"Masks are fake news and part of the liberal conspiracy to take over the galaxy."
"I've never died before, so I'm in no danger."
"How could I smoke if I'm wearing a mask???"
"I like sticking my tongue out at people and couldn't do that while wearing a mask."
"I'm an irresponsible idiot and wearing a mask just wouldn't be right."

  • Rick Sanchez Jun-03-2020
    TSA
Wearing a mask is like the TSA. Something put in place to make you feel safe cause the Government said so.
    Now drink your kool-aid kiddies.
100k deaths and no vaccine or preventative shot. Flu 50k and we have a damn shot.
The numbers are starting to show that it wasn't as deadly as they thought.

... until resort fees and 6:5 blackjack is gone

    Mask and smoking
I won't enter a casino whether masked or not until smoking is banned throughout.

    Priorities
First priority - going to a casino where everyone wears a mask
Second Priority, Going where the odds are "good" (This eliminates the strip)

The ideal situation for me, is a casino that has good odds AND everyone must wear a mask.

I prefer to go to a casino where everyone had to wear masks. That said, wherever there is 3-2 BJ and good VP odds I will go... while wearing my N100 mask!

I am in a "high risk" group and relatively comfortable wearing one and I think they help.

  • O2bnVegas Jun-03-2020
    about masks
It isn't about 6:5, or resort fees, or vaccines, folks. The topic is masks.

    The choices are sufficient.

Except--LOL. "I have previously worn a mask in casinos for other reasons." Or maybe that's just another QoD--Have you worn a mask in a casino prior to the pandemic, (medical reason, etc.) and what effect did it have on your enjoyment of the experience?

  • Randall Ward Jun-03-2020
    masks
in no hurry to risk yet, but I don't mind the mask. With drinking and now pot in Vegas people get too close and touchy so would prefer they mask. My last trip a guy sneezed at the table and it covered everyone there, I had to leave and was just glad I had the flu shot. That was February.

  • FrankieBoy P Jun-03-2020
    Just. Say. No.
I won't enter a casino until masks are required, but equally as important is whether or not the casino actually enforces the rules on masks. If the enforcement is anything like their lax policy on smoking, where security officers look the other way as patrons smoke in elevators, aisles, walkways and non gaming areas of the casino, you won't find me in a casino ever again. Also, the idiocy behind the ignorance of science and facts is stunning. The moment you remove a mask to eat or drink or smoke, you might as well not wear a mask at all. And what about these folks that use masks, but don't cover their nose? The casino industry has a long row to hoe before they will gain the confidence of the gambling public. Ironically, it is because of their laxity in the past at enforcing rules of decorum that this is so. Sadly, casinos are all about the invasion of personal space. And you can only control what you do; you can't control what others do around you, which is why casinos are deadly.

Changed May trip to the fall...not planning on wearing mask.

    Masks
When you wear a mask you are not protecting yourself, you are protecting others. It prevents your hacking from potentially infecting others. If everyone wears a mask then you have a reasonably safe environment. Costco got it right.

So if masks are optional for patrons then you need to avoid people without masks which may also mean avoiding the venue.

I also think smoking/vaping should be banned as the particulate matter of the exhaled or blown material can carry the virus further than it naturally would and is counter culture to the mask. I am just waiting for Nevada to blow up with lawsuits from casino workers exposed to 2nd hand smoke.

The one good thing that the mask era has brought is that you don't have to look at those over inflated duck lips. Perhaps this will stop that horrible fashion trend.

  • Sandra Ritter Jun-03-2020
    Rich Sanchez
There's never been a shutdown for the flu. It was less deadly because of the shutdown. With all the loosening up and the protests and rioters obviously not keeping their distance, let's see how many more deaths we get.

  • JimBeam Jun-03-2020
    I'm local and no casinos
I am a local and I'm mask *and* gloves when I go out (basically no one in Vegas wears gloves and few wear masks). I do not plan on going into casinos any time soon. I may walk The Strip for photography and exercise, but that's about it. My only plan to enter a casino is for Caesars Palace so that I can make a deposit into my WSOP account so I can play online poker at home. But I'm going to walk right in and out just for that deposit. I most likely won't return to my usual casino visits (gambling, dinners, shopping, etc) until there is a vaccine.

  • Robert Davis Jun-03-2020
    Masks cut infections
I won't go in until everyone is required to wear a mask and there is a vaccine. The new study from the Univ of Hong Kong done by the doctor who discovered SARS shows that wearing a mask can lower your infection rate and lower how sick you become. Your chance of getting the virus from someone wearing a mask is lower by 75%. It's a fact that this is a pathogen load disease. The more and longer you're exposed to it, the sicker you get. Plus the flu shot is only 40%-60% effective each year. Three layer masks have be shown to be that effective.

  • David Jun-03-2020
    Hmmmm
Seems silly to wear a mask through the casino, then go to your room and lay down on a pillow that was probably used by multiple, multiple, multiple people... Now that I think about it maybe I should bring a blacklight!

  • steve crouse Jun-03-2020
    Not just no
Not just NO, but HELL NO!
I don't virtue signal for anybody.
If people are still scared, perhaps they should continue quarantining in their home until all dangers are gone.

  • Diane Crosby Jun-03-2020
    yes and no
I will wear one, though they are very uncomfortable, but may take it off if I am very far away from others.

Spoke with a supervisor at PENN GAMING in detroit this morning , masks will be MANDATORY , when they open . hopefully june 15th or 23rd, waiting for GOV. WHITMERS ok . ty , tyvm

  • SterlingGuy Jun-03-2020
    Follow the Science. NO masks
The infection rate for this flu is .0003-- 95% less than what we were told back in March. The fact is we were duped- either intentionally or by well meaning idiots- into this man-made crisis. These ridiculous lockdowns and "heath safety theater" need to end. Now. And stop saying masks make you safe. They don't. It may make you FEEL safe, but there is no evidence (as both the CDC and WHO disagree with each other). But if people what to wear a mask, maybe they should also wear an armband showing their obedience to this superstition.

I don't know about a mask.I think a better idea is someone at each casino entrance taking temperatures. If people know they are doing that it might keep them away.

    Answers, not suggs...again
Wow! A lot of responses, but very little in the way of suggestions, mostly the comments that would be appropriate next week when the actual survey comes out. 2 thoughts about poll answers...1) I will return to a casino when it is considered safe with no one wearing masks, and 2) I've gotten used to online gaming, so I might just stay home and play.

  • Ray Jun-03-2020
    Another choice
How about...I will go back and follow whatever rules are set forth and then decide whether or not I will go back with or without a mask.

  • Jeff Jun-03-2020
Please, someone, fix the leak under the Kitchen Sink.
@David Washing a pillow (or, for that matter, washing your hands or anything) with soap & water removes the virus. That has been the consistent message that's survived all the revised pandemic advisories. Now you don't have to bring a blacklight.

@Kevin Lewis All your answers were political statements. Not even a pretense of cloaking them with relevancy to the QoD.

@Rick Sanchez Your comment was as irrelevant as Kevin Lewis's, but you added bogus information as a kicker. "The numbers are starting to show that it wasn't as deadly as they thought."

@David (of the virus-laden pillows?) I suppose when the QoD is about resort fees & BJ, you'll weigh in on masks, so I guess it all evens out in the end.

@Candy Wrong, LVA hall monitor, lectures us that "the choices are sufficient." Then allows herself to add some. But hey, that's the hall monitor prerogative.

@SterlingGuy wrote, "[The pandemic is a] man-made crisis." Maybe have a meet-up with Rick Sanchez next Vegas trip?

Death is death be it 0.2% chance or 100%. You have a 0.865% chance of dying every year according to the CDC, they also say that if the total deaths from C-19 was 120k for the year that number would only rise to 0.9%
Unless you want to stay home and hide you run the risk every single day of death and you know what, nobody gets out alive.
If it scares you that much please stay home. If wearing a mask on your face for the rest of your life makes you feel safe and happy by all means please do. I myself am not going to go through the rest of my life scared of dying because the numbers say it’s just not worth it.There is something out there that is going to kill you, Covid-19, Flu, suicide, a scratch from a cat, drunk driver, second hand smoke at a casino or even natural causes.
None of us do everything that can keep us healthy, some of us eat meat and some of us sugar some eat too much salt all stuff that leads to premature death."The only thing we have to fear...is fear itself” FDR 1933

  • Tal2 Jun-03-2020
    No Comparison
Rick Sanchez, 50k flu deaths with a vaccine and no masks, and 100k c-19 deaths with no vaccine and most wearing masks and social distancing. Not even close.

  • Roger Gallizzi Jun-03-2020
    Gamble
Well, the reason you go in a casino is to GAMBLE. SO take one and go.

  • Martin Shedlin Jun-03-2020
risking your health to play blackjack
@ Rick Death isn't the only bad thing that can happen to you if you get Covid. Anyone who still thinks Covid is "just like seasonal flu" is at least one month behind the times. For young and old it's a terrible disease with possible longterm and possibly permanent disabilities.

Some patients have very slow, very painful recoveries taking months. Their stories are very scary. It isn't known if their lung or other problems will be permanent, because Covid hasn't been around long enough. Some patients lose their sense of smell, making food tasteless. This may be permanent. Although this could be an advantage for going to the Circus Circus buffet, it would be a terrible way to go through life.

I understand taking risks for education, worship, earning a living, but just to play video poker or craps? Really?

    Facemasks
This virus threat is bigger than just the USA. No way the entire world is making up a hoax. Too many dead people worldwide are getting buried with this as cause of death. I trust what other countries such as S Korea, New Zealand, Norway and Japan have said and done regarding the corona virus. They say the threat is real, it is contagious and the 3 best things they did was have people wear face masks, wash hands often and space themselves apart when possible. You don't have to believe it, many people denied for years that cigarettes contributed to cancer but you'd be in the minority for ignoring the science in both cases. I'd feel better if people in casinos wear masks, I don't mind wearing one to help protect myself and the employees I interact with. They deserve our respect and to not be concerned for them is uncaring. It's not a big deal to lift the mask to drink something, people on planes are doing it. You can be part of the solution or part of the problem.

    The big Con
Sheeple, you are part of the biggest con in American medical history. Wake up. I work in law enforcement. People get shot, die in auto accidents, stage 4 cancer,etc... Guess what, The ME gives a Covid19 test and if they had it, it gets counted as a Covid19 death. Doesn't matter if they were asymptomatic. Add in the Santa Clara and New York city antibody studies, and this thing is no worse than the flue. If your 25 years or less, you have a better chance of getting struck by lightening than dying from this virus. I will NOT go to a casino if I am required to wear a mask. What a fiasco..... Bring on a nation wide antibody test. You will get the true results. Government doesn't want you to know the truth.

  • Edso Jun-03-2020
    Need a vaccine
As much as I want to go to Vegas, I will wait until there is a vaccine. I want to be able to enjoy myself and not have to keep pulling down a mask to drink my beer. Also, hopefully the virus is will be really slowed down and it will be much safer.

  • dblund Jun-03-2020
    It is situational.
I'll be there in July and will where a mask where asked, or if playing table games. If at a machine I'd look at how many are around me and how close. I would gladly wear one for to be able to play poker with at least 6 at a table. People's situations are very different, and the young and healthy do have a lower risk with this threat. So the question might be, do you care about protecting other people who might not be as lucky as you, or is it all about you?

  • [email protected] Jun-03-2020
    choices
I wear a mask all the time,as it is whats called for.

I have no problem wearing one in a casino as long as the person near me also is wearing one

Enforcement on smoking,if there are smoking areas then i'll smoke, which are cigars so the mask would be off for a while

I'm going out to LV in september so things probably will change by then

allowing people in areas where it can get crowded(sportsbooks)will there be a limit on how many will be allowed in at one time,i'm not sure thats legal due to your right to watch the games no matter the count of people they might allow

lawsuits, there will be many filed,as civil rights will be violated by the casino towards patrons

i will be in casinos in september

  • Adumb Jun-03-2020
I will wear one in high traffic areas
I will only wear one in lobbies and on my way to different places indoors. Once I sit down at a machine I will take it off my face. I will pick machines that are further away from high traffic areas. I doubt I will be playing cards during this thing but if I do play something like poker I will most likely use a thin mask and lots of sanitizer.

  • AlwaysTails Jun-04-2020
    @Rick Sanchez
The CDC reports combined flu and pneumonia deaths. The number of flu deaths per year is much less than 50k. The 100k deaths from covid is over 2-3 months, not a year. The CDC reported about 6k deaths from the flu over the same time period.

  • rokgpsman Jun-05-2020
    Flu vs COVID-19
The ordinary flu virus grows colonies mostly in your lungs, this new coronavirus builds it's colonies mostly in your throat and upper resp tract. So it's much easier for a covid infected person to cough or sneeze and expel droplets with the virus than it is for a person with the flu. Also, the covid virus mutated from an animal-based virus, it has a much longer incubation period than the ordinary human flu virus. Someone that catches the flu will start feeling crummy in just a couple of days and they know they are sick, so they start precautions much sooner. With this new covid virus the incubation period is many days slower to develop, so you can be infected for a week or so and not know it, but are able to spread it around.during that time. That's why it is much more contagious than ordinary flu. People with it in the early stages don't realize they are sick, so they sneeze, cough, drink after one another, kiss, shake hands, and do other stuff that isn't considered spreading a virus.

  • NeonGlo Jun-06-2020
    Is Foolhardiness Contagious?
I need a mask just to enter THIS area. Anyway, it's really all about how the contagion is playing out at the time; peak, flat or trough. I suspect I will be wearing a mask through the fall at least, and will avoid non-mask-mandated environments as well.
