Question of the Day - 20 November 2019

Q:

Poll Preview: What will never happen in Las Vegas?

A:

This poll comes via a suggestion from a reader that we thought we'd have some fun with. Nothing earth-shattering or life-changing will come out of it and obviously, an infinite number of things will never happen in Las Vegas (trees won't start growing upside down; the city won't be invaded by an army of Yetis; an 84-year-old Elvis won't emerge after decades of living with Jimmy Hoffa in Swaziland, Kevin Lewis probably will never be named director of public relations for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce), but of all the unlikely choices, we'll be very interested to see which is unlikeliest.

Feel free to add your own suggestions for choices in this poll. A committee of LVA staffers will determine which are included. Here are a few to get the creative juices flowing.

Monorail extension to airport/downtown

Honey Boo Boo residency

Boyd Gaming returns to old players club VP criteria

Star Trek resort-casino

NBA megaresort arena on old Wet n Wild site

Barbra Streisand residency

Public transportation system in tunnels under the Strip

Beverly Hillbillies-themed casino

Titanic-themed casino

6-5 blackjack declared illegal by the Gaming Control Board

Free parking returns to all Strip casinos

Prostitution legalized in Las Vegas

Resort fees not only abolished, but refunded in their entirety

Clocks and windows to the outside on every casino wall

Table games where only cash plays, no casino chips

The Strip will be closed to cars for a pedestrian-only promenade like Fremont Street downtown

Casinos will impose a dress code in order to enter and gamble

Resorts World will resurrect the Stardust buffet

Anthony Curtis will give up beer

LA to Las Vegas bullet train
LA to Las Vegas bullet train...ain't gonna happen! They may start building it, but it won't get finished.

  • Ron Coventry Nov-20-2019
what will never happen in vegas
Airport Cabbies will ask you if you do NOT want to take the tunnel.

  • Flaxx Nov-20-2019
    No more new construction
Las Vegas will be a great city if they ever finish it.

  • David Nov-20-2019
    The list is endless
    - Strip steakhouses that don't gouge for wine
    - Fair video poker pay schedules
    - Etc.

  • Stewart Ethier Nov-20-2019
    Monorail
It's a shame if the Monorail extension to the airport and downtown never happens. It would be bad for the taxi companies but great for tourists.

  • Rob Reid Nov-20-2019
    Weed in Casinos
Machines vending packages of spliffs inside casinos

    Never?
Las Vegas is the one place that you can never say never. With the exception of the joke answers, anything and everything can and will happen in Vegas. That's part of the charm of what makes Vegas what it is. If you can imagine it, it CAN happen.

  • Sandra Ritter Nov-20-2019
    People Watching
Las Vegas will never stop being the best place for people watching.

    Never Happen Wish-List
    1) they'll build a better monorail going from the airport to downtown Fremont St that runs right above the Strip (LV Blvd) on an overhead track, with multiple convenient stops. The monorail would run in a continuous loop 24 hours, there would be 3 separate trains to reduce waiting time.
    2) Those big trucks with the giant advertising signs would be banned from driving on the Strip. Only adds to the horrible traffic and they drive slow..
    3) Vegas and the casinos will get serious about getting rid of the smut peddlers handing out paper that gets tossed on the sidewalk making an ugly mess. Screw the ACLU, find a way to get rid of that public nuisance. If someone wants to use an escort service there are many easy ways to call them, don't need the porn slappers right in our face.
    4) Casinos are making millions, the fees that get added to rent a car shouldn't be 50% of my rental car cost. Nearly everyone coming to Vegas is going to spend some money directly or indirectly at the casinos.

    Never Happen?
Terrorist attack - - - by actual Muslim terrorists.
They have been here but not for scouting.
Everybody wants to SIN in Sin City.

  • Boogieman888 Nov-20-2019
    Never say Never
Casinos go back to letting slot players win small pots instead of 1 player winning mega pots. (You all know the casinos don't make money from gambling anymore)

  • IdahoPat Nov-20-2019
    Smoking
Las Vegas will never remain a place where smoking is allowed on the casino floor. Eventually, all indoor places -- including casinos -- will be nonsmoking.

  • Kevin Lewis Nov-20-2019
    Mathematical awareness
What will never happen--everybody who gambles will come to the stark realization that when they, say, insert a $100 bill into a slot machine, it's exactly the same thing as setting fire to a $10 bill; that playing $25 6:5 BJ costs you about $30 an hour; that betting $100 on your favorite football team costs you $4.55. Over and over.

In other words, people will never soberly assess the actual cost of their gamboooling. If they did, they might ask themselves: why am I throwing away money?

Or you could put it another way: what will never happen is that people will arrive in Vegas with functioning cerebrums. Rationality in Vegas will continue to be as rare as sobriety in a beer hall on New Year's Eve.

  • O2bnVegas Nov-20-2019
    cameras in the Conservatory
Bellagio will forbid cameras in the Conservatory.

Of course that will NEVER happen. I should be able to walk through at a leisurely pace, enjoy every display, read all the informative plaques without it being like dodging bumper cars. Instead, every step puts me in the path of hoards of families taking photos...excuse me...excuse me...oh well sh*t just plow ahead and damn the F-stops. Grrr. Realizing this is a really Grinchy attitude!

  • O2bnVegas Nov-20-2019
    no strollers
Wynn will reinstate the policy of no strollers, no children.

Even Steve Wynn didn't have the guts to enforce his own policy, so while it did happen for 15 minutes, this definitely will never happen again.

  • O2bnVegas Nov-20-2019
    residency
A Gaither Family residency, will never happen.

It might be surprising, though. With the large number of vacationing geezers (like me) in Vegas...

  • Texas Transplant Nov-20-2019
    A few ideas
Heart Attack Grill will become a Vegan restaurant

Las Vegas city council will make it illegal to drink alcohol while on the Strip

White Castle will close because of a lack of business

MGM will eliminate parking fees and bring back 3-2 blackjack at $5 tables

Construction will finally end on all Las Vegas highways, totally eliminating traffic delays and road congestion

  • Roy Furukawa Nov-20-2019
    Strip Traffic
Along with the monorail not connecting from McCarron to downtown, there will never be a time we will see a traffic-less strip on a weekend night... even if we invent flying cars.

  • Toad Nov-20-2019
    One can hope!
The Strip gets a huge dome and a great A/C system.

    Corporate Wake-up
Corporations will realize that Vegas was built drawing customers by providing fun experiences through games with games with fair payouts, and collecting a small percentage. Discouraging return players costs far more than they are collecting through tighter machines and 6/5 blackjack, especially with the increasing competition across the country. Think there is any chance of the corporations looking beyond today's profits to see that they are slowly killing the golden goose?

  • Nov-20-2019
    Return to old-style
Sandra Newman took my submission! OK, she posted 1st, so she's legit: That Las Vegas (or the county or the state) would ban gambling. So here's my #2 submission: That a law will be passed forbidding corporations (or partnerships) from owning or managing hotels or casinos in Las Vegas, but rather only allowing individuals and families to own or manage them. And my #3 submission: That a law will be passed making the maximum total/final lodging cost per night at all hotels be 1/1000 of the guest's annual salary. The casinos could work this any way they want: if they want to charge $35/night in resort fees, they'd only get to charge $15/night (and absorb the taxes) for anyone whose annual salary is $50,000. These two things combined would return things to the way they were 60 years ago before Las Vegas got corrupted by corporate greed and shenanigans. Vegas would be a nicer place if nice guys like Jackie Gaughan were running the show at every casino.

    A positive note for David
David listed as something that will never happen: "Fair video poker pay schedules". Hey, David, good news! There currently ARE lots of VP pay schedules in several Las Vegas casinos that are not only fair, but great. You are probably self-restricted to Strip casinos, which have the worst paytables in the entire town. Hop on the Website vpFREE2.com and you will see that many casinos have many machines that pay over 100%. They're just not the glamorous hot spots that the Strip has. But outside of the flashiness of the Strip places, these less-snazzy places are better than Strip casinos in almost every other way.

  • Doug Bergman Nov-21-2019
    Also unlikely
People stop complaining about their first world problems.

  • Sandra Ritter Nov-21-2019
    @Jackie
Not sure why I feel I need to defend my suggestion but: I live near 2 Walmarts, each about 2.5 miles from me, one east of me and one west. Maybe because they're each in suburbs touching the north side of Chicago, I have NEVER seen folks in either store that look at all like the ones shown online in the 'ha ha look what I saw at Walmart' articles. Everyone at least appears 'normal'. However the 'Walmart folks' are a regular occurrence in Las Vegas, at least every time I'm there.

There's an "It'll never happen in Vegas" question: Backing off a player for losing too much!
Seriously, I doubt LV will ever become a heavy manufacturing metropolis. Henderson's days are past that, too.
