Question of the Day - 24 April 2019

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: Have you ever come to Las Vegas and not gambled?

A:

The recently released Las Vegas Convention and Visitor Authority's 2018 "Visitor Profile Study" indicates that only around 250 (7%) of the 3,600 survey participants claimed that gambling was their primary reason for vacationing in Las Vegas. Furthermore, among first-time visitors (18% of survey respondents), only 36 (1%) came primarily to gamble.

So we'd like to know how many LVA.com readers have visited Vegas and not gambled on a given trip.

Remember, this is the poll preview only. Here, we're not interested in whether or not you've ever vacationed in Las Vegas and not gambled -- and anyone who comments on that will reveal that they didn't read the first three (brief!) paragraphs about the poll preview.  (Either that or they just can't help themselves.) Besides, the reason that we're burdening everyone with a QoD dedicated to this preview is to see if we can improve the poll in response to the LVCVA's own survey.

Have we provided all the possible responses? If not, please suggest others. Are we missing the boat on our perspective? If so, please point it out.

Thanks in advance. The poll will run a week from today and we'll announce and link to it at the end of that day's QoD.

No. Are you kidding? Why go to Las Vegas if you're not going to gamble?

Yes. Sometimes I play, sometimes I don't. I visit just as much for the dining, entertainment, shopping, etc.

Yes. Sometimes I play, sometimes I don't. I have family/friends in Las Vegas and we might have too many other things planned.

Yes. Sometimes I play, sometimes I don't. I come every year on business or to attend a convention and am often too busy to sit down and risk my money.

Yes. I never gamble. But my significant other/friend/family member does and I go along for the ride.

Yes. Sometimes we ay, sometimes we don't. We visit for the glitz, see what's changed and/or new and people watch.

    Poll
F No! It's too fun not to wager on sports, especially when you come from a place that doesn't allow it. Find a bad pitcher like Homer Bailey to go against or a good home team you trust and enjoy the action.

    Qualifying NO answers
How about some variety in the No responses? As in: No, but sometimes I gamble more than other times. Or: No, I always do some gaming, but recently my bankroll is higher/lower. Or: No, but I only play poker, which isn't the same kind of gambling. Or: No, but recently the amount of time/money I gamble is less/more than it used to be.

how about no but I lie about it. I used to come for training at UNLV and would hear that story about sitting down once, doubling their money and never playing again.

    Gambling Poll
How about a percentage option. I for one have had one trip out of a large number where I didn't gamble. Actually a good option would be what percentage of your time that is not spent eating or sleeping is spent on gambling, shopping sight seeing and show going etc.

    Poll
No, we always gamble. I find it hard to believe that only 7% say they come to gamble. Years ago, before there were so many local casinos, a bellman asked why we were in Vegas. We said to gamble, and he was surprised. He said most people say to see shows, etc. I think people don't want to admit that they come to gamble. Even though we have local casinos, I much prefer gambling in Vegas. But, that is true because of everything else Vegas has to offer.

Seems like too many options. A yes, no, or sometimes gives a better answer than yes/no. Although 3 options for sometimes may be interesting (I guess), how does that help improve the LVCVA poll?

    Poll
I'm a gambler, and always am looking for time to place a bet. My purpose for going to Vegas is not specifically to gamble, but to enjoy the amenities that Vegas has in plenty, including gambling. There has only been one time that I didn't actually gamble anything, and that was when I came in for a convention for only one day and just didn't have time. I'm not sure how you'd frame the question to accurately reflect my situation, but maybe "I always gamble, except for that one time".

    caution doesn't matter
Apparently telling people not to comment about their habits was too far down the preview. Maybe if your first line told them not to answer, they might have complied. I like the additional "no" options that was suggested, but also just yes/no/sometimes has merit too.

How about those of us locals who know of non gamblers like friends or family who visit but are dead set against gambling. Then there are the nearby towns to Vegas whose citizens visit Vegas for non gambling reasons like a Doctors appointment, service, or shopping they can't get at home. Most polls, like the one you refer to, do not ask pre-qualifying questions like "Do you live here", "is this your home State", or even the most basic "do you gamble".

    boat capsized
Competing qualifiers in the proposed options...who can answer, and what will they show? Maybe I'm missing it.

    Suggestions:

Question: Have you ever come to Las Vegas and not gambled?

     - No. I come to Las Vegas to gamble, period. [Slight different.]
     - Yes. On occasion I don't. But more often than not, I gamble.
     - Yes. Gambling does not interest me. I only come for business.
     - Yes. Gambling does not interest me. I enjoy the hotels, dining, shows, or special events without gambling.
     - Yes. I cannot afford to gamble. I only come for business.
     - Yes. I cannot afford to gamble. I only come with friends for shows or special events.
     - Yes. I come to Las Vegas for business. I gamble at other locations where I get more bang for my buck, e.g. no Resort Fees, no parking fees, looser slots and table rules.

    More No's
My problem is that you always give reasons, which may not match. I've always gambled on LAS trips, but I could certainly see coming and not playing. So none of your answers would match for me. Why not just a simple "No" as an option?

While it doesn't apply to me, a simple "Yes" would also be a good option. Someone may come for business and due to meetings, etc., not have time to play. Or they may come as a starting place for a trip to the Grand Canyon, or to see a specific show, or for a hockey game, or for the rodeo, etc.

    Possible answer
YES, and I've visited San Diego and didn't go to the beach, visited New York City and never saw a Broadway show, visited Nashville and didn't eat BBQ, and visited Iowa and didn't shuck a single ear of corn.

  • Apr-24-2019
    Another possible answer
I made 1 total non-gambling trip to Las Vegas. It was for my father's funeral. So you should add something like "Funeral or family emergency" to the list of choices.

    Poll
How about "I've gambled on every trip to Las Vegas since I was 21." I wasn't allowed on my first trip to Las Vegas.
