Question of the Day - 16 June 2021

Q:

It's been a little more than two years since we went to the new alignment between Question of the Day and the LVA polls. Prior to that, we dedicated six QoDs per month to the polls: two previews, two polls themselves, and two results. Based on your feedback from the poll in April 2019, we revised that schedule to dedicating only two Questions of the Day per month to poll previews; the polls themselves are linked to regular QoDs.

So we're checking in on the latest sentiments about the poll previews and polls. It's a good system for us, but is it good for you? Would you like to return to two more QoDs dedicated to the polls? Would you like to keep or do away with the poll previews? Would you prefer to be done with the polls entirely?

Here are the choices we've come up with. Please let us know, in the usual fashion, if they can be improved on.

A:

I prefer the status quo: two poll previews and the polls as links in Questions of the Day.

I like the polls linked to the QoDs, but I could do without the poll previews.

I like the previews and results, but two polls per month are one too many; I vote for 12 per year.

I'd prefer an occasional poll on no set schedule, perhaps only when a QoD warrants one.

Drop the polls, period. All Questions of the Day, all the time.

    Please! No more polls
Polls, surveys, and reporter on the street interviews are pure BS, political, and falsely influence public opinion.
The way LVA has run the polls has not been uniform in it's methodology, analysis, or opinions.

Unfortunately I can predict the outcome of this "poll", "I'd prefer an occasional poll on no set schedule, perhaps only when a QoD warrants one."

Each QoD already gets a plethora of opinions so we really don't need polls to find out what QoD readers think about any QoD. I've noticed that you never compared any poll results to readers comments on the same subject to see if there is a correlation.

So for me, I would prefer reading a new QoD instead hashing to death old ones.

    Make the link stand out
I agree that the polls are somewhat pointless. After all, while the polls often generate over 1000 votes, that still is a very small sample, and not at all representative of any specific group other than LVA readers.

On the other hand, I do not mind them since they tend to generate reader responses which can be helpful or entertaining.

And as I mentioned in the past, many of the polls would be better if they included demographic questions - but only if the results were presented in a grid showing demographic overlap.

But back to the original question. Quantity? I have no opinion. Preview? Again, no opinion. I also do not mind them sharing a page with an unrelated QOD.

My only suggestion is to stop hiding them at the end of a QOD. Put the link in a box of its own, above the day's question, so that it stands out better.

    Polls
I’d prefer an occasional poll. No set schedule. 😊

I like the poll about polls!

    Poll
I enjoy the chatter and comments about the poll and find a lot of humour in it.
The results of the poll are really irrelevant to me.

I would like it if the QOD threw questions back at the readers such as what do you think about Caesars taking over the Venetian? You might have to moderate a bit more but I think it would be better than a poll.

    Option
I like the poll preview as it gives an opportunity for a broader range of options within the poll than otherwise may have been available or thought of.

Unfortunately, I miss some of the polls and the results because they're buried in QOD. Why not a small separate spot for polls on the site with a friendly reminder within QOD to check out the poll section?

Two polls a month is good. Definitely no more than that. One every 3 weeks would be perfect.

    No Polls
I don't care for the polls, and when I go to the QID and se one, I feel disappointed!

    Most are.... Please end polls.

    Polls
Polls are OK but I'd like to see more multiple, short questions answered in the QOD. I certainly appreciate the effort that goes into some of the long responses but days could go by before something of interest comes up and that's disappointing. If multiple, short questions were answered there would be a better chance of keeping everyone's interest. Some QODs ask information that seems to be easily obtained by just an internet search. That research should be left to the individual. I've submitted some QOD's that seem pretty basic but I've researched first to no avail. Those questions never get answered. I realize not everything is of interest to everybody but it's still hard to tell why some questions get print space and others don't. With short Q's & A's you have a better chance of keeping people's interest.

    Preferences of MOI
I believe that LVA, as with all other organizations, should cater to my every whim. If they want to have a poll, they should run it by MOI first for approval. I'm sure that they'll be grateful to learn that so far, I approve of how they've been doing things, which is of course the sole consideration.

    There's Always Choice
As far as I know, this is a free country. No one is forced to read or answer polls, nor are they forced to read the results and ensuing comments. If this is a good system for you, it's a good system for me. If it's a poll I don't relate to, I don't answer it. Else I do. It's as easy as that.

    Preview
It seems the previews tend to get confused with the poll itself like here where most comments are actual answers to the coming poll. So I will follow suit and answer the poll and I say can the previews.

    Late entry
So many responders sounding off in the PREVIEW pretty much takes away from the actual poll. I lose interest.

If poll creators don't notice, I personally make an effort in the PREVIEW to only suggest improvements to the poll (maybe how things are ranked, etc.) and not sound off about my preferences and dislikes, but I think I'm in the minority in doing that. I think Ray and I are among the few who make that effort.

So, as much as I usually have ideas how the poll STRUCTURE could be improved, I'm in the minority there and it gets tiresome slogging through everybody's gripes about the same stuff...Resort Fees, Parking Fees, fewer comps from this or that casino, etc.

To the question of the question
My only issue with the current poll structure is that I end up forgetting about them and never look up the results. The links are very unobtrusive and easily ignored, so with that, I would suggest the questions run something like:

I would like the polls appearing in the QoDs
I like the previews appearing in the QoDs
I would like the poll results appearing in the QoDs
I like the polls linked to the QoDs
I would prefer the previews linked to the QoDs
I would prefer the poll results linked to the QoDs
    Don't care never read them
I would like to see a poll every week
I would like to see a poll every two weeks
I would like to see a poll every three weeks
I would like to see a poll once a month
I'd prefer an occasional poll on no set schedule, perhaps only when a QoD warrants one

I think that might get you the information you seek. Thanks once again for all of it!
