Question of the Day - 04 December 2019

Q:

Poll Preview: Do you shop when you come to Las Vegas? And if so, where?

A:

The last time we ran this poll was in 2011, so we figured it was time to revisit your shopping preferences in Las Vegas.

The telltale comment we received for the poll more than eight years ago was, "In more than 20 years of visiting Las Vegas, the only shopping malls we go to are the ones you have to walk through to get to the casinos."

We fully understand and respect that point of view, not being big shoppers ourselves. But the fact remains that Las Vegas has some great retail outlets, many of which tie in with the city's reputation for bargains and deals, even on high-end designer gear.

So if you realize you left something essential at home, or you feel like splurging in stores you don't have at home (or not at our outlet-mall prices), or you're done gambling and want to stay out of the heat or cold for awhile, or you want to pick up some souvenirs or something a little different that you couldn't find at your local mall, or you just hit a big jackpot and are ready to let totally loose, there's no sin in shopping in Sin City.

Here are our choices. Let us know in the comment boxes if we forgot any. This is the preview; we'll vote a week from today.

    Thankless Job
I served as a board member for 20 years in Ohio, the last 15 years as president. You cannot win. If you try to enforce the rules of th HOA you get harassed. If you do not enforce the rules you get harassed. Nothing is ever good enough. Those that complain the loudest are the ones that never want to be on the board. No one understands what a board member goes through unless they serve as well. A truly thankless job

    Shopping poll.
These are just everyday shopping places, but I never come to Vegas without going to WalMart or any of the grocery stores at least once or twice.

What & why is more interesting then where
I'd be more interested in what people shop for here then where. Are they buying a Rolex or getting a bottle of aspirin? And why? To give their friends/family back home a gift or get something for themselves? Are they buying something to initiate conversations about their Vegas vacation? How much does Instagram have to do with it?
    But that's just me ;)

    more
     - McCarran Airport. For the forgotten quick gift. Maybe some Vegas themed boxer shorts? LOL

     - Wynn Plaza Shops. Newer than the Esplanade and many more interesting shopping options.

     - Paris-Bally's walk way/tunnel. Some interesting shops along the way.

    Shopping
I always like to go to the ABC stores in the Miracle Mile Shops by Planet Hollywood. Interesting selection of drinks, snacks and small souvenirs at reasonable prices. Would go here before CVS and Walgreens were on the strip. Thanks for asking.

Not sure if it is still around
My favorite was the America! store in the Miracle Mile Shops. Other than there I stop in at M&M, Coke and Hershey stores. Then I hit up every gift shop I see as I collect a bunch of crap I never look at again.

Shopping hasn't been a big part of the Las Vegas experience for me...
I've been to both Gamblers General Store and Gamblers Book Club (before they merged). Also once bought some boots at Smith and Chandler's on Fremont Street where Sundance/Fitzgerald's/D stands today. There were a couple of other souvenir shops on Fremont with mostly low-end gambling stuff, and one that must have had thousands of solid brass 2-inch belt buckles, covering an entire wall. This was the early 1970's.
There's also the souvenir shop in the old El Portal theater, and the big one out on the Strip near the Strat: "If it's in stock--we have it!"
What else?...Some of the big liquor stores like Total Wine (I think) out near the Hustler Club; and another on East Tropicana. And I once went to a Woolco in Las Vegas for something automotive. Woolco went out of business in 1983.
I've walked through the Desert(ed) Passage at Aladdin/Planet Hollywood two or three times, and visited Caesars Forum Shops on my single visit to Caesars years ago, but don't remember buying anything there.

    Uh.. Guys?
You forgot HUNTINGTON PRESS. Sometimes those of us who pick up our books from your office to save shipping might pick up a book or two direct from you.

  • T. Ferguson Dec-04-2019
    Plants
My wife LOVES plants, we always stop at Lowe's and Home Depot to buy houseplants that we can't find at home.

    One answer left out
"Who the %#$%$@# has any money for shopping after spending more than five minutes in Vegas???"

  • ocliffgirl62 Dec-04-2019
    Shopping in Vegas
I like the shops upstairs between Mandalay Bay and Luxor, especially the sock store. I have bought distilled water for my husband's CPAP in the drug stores. Can't forget buying shirts and hoodies at the little shop just inside Casino Royale.

  • Doug Bergman Dec-04-2019
    Yes
+1 for Savers! A great place to stock up on paperback fiction, coffee mugs, hats, clothing, and almost-free casino branded merch.

+1 for the Huntington Press Bargain Bin while picking up my POV book

    Also make regular stops at:
    KSHP office for coupons
    Walmart for consumables
    You get the picture.

  • Doug Bergman Dec-04-2019
    Conspicuously absent
