Question of the Day - 04 November 2020

Q:

Poll preview: Have your sports betting habits changed since it's been legalized in nearly half the states?

A:

The last time we ran this poll was in April 2018, a month before the Supreme Court’s decision that overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, paving the way for the legalization of sports betting in 19 states currently, plus Washington, D.C.  and including Tennessee, where it started up on Sunday. Another three states — Virginia, North Carolina, and Washington — have passed bills legalizing it this year, but are not yet operational. And three more states — Maryland, Louisiana, and South Dakota —  voted on legalization yesterday.

So we’re curious what the effect of the explosion of wagering on sporting events has had on your gambling habits over the past two and a half years. These are the same choices we ran in 2018, updated for current conditions. Still, suggestions are always welcome.

I never made a bet on a sporting event before the Supreme Court decision and I haven't since.

I bet on sports when I'm in Las Vegas, but only for fun, not seriously. Likewise, I bet for fun when I'm in a casino with a sports book that I visit locally, but I won't make a special trip to a casino just to place a sports bet.

I always bet on sports in Vegas, so definitely investigate betting in my home state once it becomes legal nationwide.

Luckily, I live in a state that has a mobile sports betting app, so I can do so at home.

I don't want to have to go to a casino, either in Las Vegas or my home state, to bet sports; I want the Supreme Court to open up online sports betting in the U.S. and internationally.

I don't understand sports betting at all. I have no idea what a pointspread is, or a money line, or a parlay. If I understood it better, I might take some shots.

I rarely bet on sports in Las Vegas, because of the red tape in collecting if I win, but have already left town. I'm much likely to bet in a sports book that's closer to home, since collecting is so much easier.

I live in Las Vegas and I can bet sports whenever I like; if I'm traveling, I might bet, but I wouldn't go out of my way to.

I bet with "Uncle Joe," whose wife is a dispatcher at the sheriff's department; unless the local casino book has good promos or better lines, not much will change.

I’m a professional sports bettor who’ll travel anywhere I can get the best of it.

I'm a professional sports bettor who, through various methods, can bet online as much as I like, and I don't have to travel anywhere to do so.

    Separate
The second sentence is three separate thoughts:

     - I bet on sports when I'm in Las Vegas, but only for fun.
     - I bet for fun when I'm in a local casino that a sports book.
     - I won't make a special trip to a [or any] casino just to make a sports bet.

Don't bet on sports, wont' bet on sports no matter what happens
A long time ago, after making some very unsuccessful sports bets, I realized that I don't have the patience or, moe importantly, the talent needed to intelligently bet on sports. Even if I had "more information" as listed in the questions above, I still wouldn't do it.

    Really, it's "maybe"
Now that sports wagering is legal and available in my state (Illinois), I will look into it and consider it. In the past, it was in Vegas, and just for fun, or maybe a season-long bet, but now that it's available it might be worth looking into. So, really my response would be "I'll look into it now that I can do it legally from home", but like anything else, it all depends on whether or not I like it AFTER I've tried it.

    Okla. sports betting
would gladly bet more on sports but our governor has decided to declare war on the tribes and commit to an endless series of losing lawsuits. Hopefully Legislature will take charge and pass sports betting soon

    Huh?
I don't get the Uncle Joe choice.

Anyway, how about Sports betting is not legal in my state.

    Pro or not...
Even the recreational bettor can find action in their state if they look around. I used to work with a guy who used to pass out football parlay cards every season and if you wanted action on any other sport during the year, he could always find a connection to take your money. My question is are most bet runners from Hawaii? The few I have known all hailed from Hawaii bruddah.

    Separate
I agree with Candy. For my part, I occasionally place a sports bet when in LV; it is just part of the total experience.

    Be Real
As i read here i see a few comments about playing for fun. There is a reason that you enter a casino and then a sportsbook, and thats to win money.Theres no such thing as betting sports for fun. This would mean that if you win your bet you would not get paid. There is free online gambling they have for fun,but its in the variety of SLOT machines.Fun would be walking past the casino and do something else, but if you go into a casino right there the fun ends and you are there to win money, which this so called fun always can lead to bigger problems only cause you went in the casino.Bottom line here is,once you go in the only way you come out is with no money, and thats not FUN
