Question of the Day - 21 February 2018

Q:

New Reader Poll Preview: Do you tip your hotel housekeepers?

A:

This will be our next poll, which will run a week from today (February 28). It's a straightforward survey about whether or not you leave a tip for your hotel housekeepers and if so, how much. There are also a few ancillary questions that reveal tipping philosophies.

If you'd like to suggest other choices, we'll appreciate hearing them and incorporate them into next week's poll.

And we'd prefer if you hold your general comments about housekeeper tipping for the poll page; we'd like to keep comments on this page for hints about the poll itself.

Here are the choices:

I always tip something, but I adjust my tips based on the state of the room (i.e., it's unusually messy) or if I'm making a special request (e.g., I would like extra toiletries)

    It varies
Housekeepers are unsung heroes that can have a big impact on the quality of my vacation, and I believe it is important to tip them, especially if the hotel is not unionized. If it's just me, usually around $3 a day. With my entire family, I try to leave $5 a day, and more if we spilled something that needs to be cleaned up. I try to leave tips daily but if I don't have cash with me one day, I will make up for it the next day.

    Also
I believe that a housekeeper who spends 15 minutes just cleaning up after me alone deserves at least as much as a waiter or waitress serving me and 5 other tables at the same time.

How about: "I always tip something, and I tip more if I had a winning day. When the train comes in, everybody rides!"

Do you leave a tip if you opt-in to "Green" housekeeping service where you may not see a housekeeper on a short stay?

Always leave a tip if I the room is cleaned
Staff work hard and I appreciate what they do. I stay in "budget" hotels and Tip is usually about $2/day, and I give it at the end of my stay. If everyone did that it can be some serious money for them.

In addition I have also given staff with liquor that I have left over at the end of a trip and can't take back on the plane. Gave it personally one time to the staff and 1/2 a bottle of Crown Royal was very much appreciated.

    Reader Poll
I tip daily - I tip well the first night. This includes the bell man who shows me to the room, and to the morning cleaner - My rationale is that the person coming to the room to clean receives the tip, and hopefully appreciates the consideration and does a good job. If the room is not back to pristine then my day 2 tip will reflect that. No guarantees that it will be the same person. I usually don't tip the last day as I am not going to be there to get the benefit.

This is Vegas so leaving a big tip on the last day may not be possible (its not called los-wages for nothing) and I may be soured by a losing streak, but seriously it may not have been the same person all the way through and if I am room staff if I don't see something left for me am I really going to be optimistic I get something on check out. - Not likely.

    leaving tip for hosekeeping
I usually leave a $5 tip for housekeeping. I stay at the Downstream Casino at least once a week. In any hotel I leave the room as clean as possible, picking up towels, leaving them on the sink. putting refuse in trash cans. If I stay two nights I ask Housekeeping to not bother making the bed. I try to lighten their burden. I pass this philosophy on to my kids and grandkids.

    Housekeeping tip
Never have room serviced during our stay(most we do is get fresh towels when we see them in hallway) So we always tip at end of our stay. A fun rule we started over a decade ago is to pile up all our change we get each day. On a short trip this usually adds up to $5 or $6 on a week trip it can be as much as $20 or more..pain to take on plane anyway:))) Housekeeping may not be happy with al that change???? So if anyone reads this that works in the field and has an opinion on it please comment:))))

    Tip Every Day
Each day before I leaver the room, I leave $2.00 on the bed with a note saying "For The Maid." This way, whoever cleans the room gets the tip. I am always afraid that if a leave a lump sum for the length of my stay, my regular housekeeper may not it because it is her day off.

    leaving a tip
I leave a tip everyday except the last, the room is not being cleaned for me that time. We are tidy hotel patrons. I throw away trash in the can, do not leave messes on the floor. It really is a thankless job and if I cannot afford $2-5 a day I shouldn't be in Vegas in the first place.

We tip $5 a day, the maids deserve it. Also tip $5 on a buffet per couple.

I always give the housekeeper the tip to her directly in person. I always ask the housekeeper if she is the one that will clean the room during my stay. I find that sometimes they are not working on the day that we are checking out. which means that someone else gets the tip

  • Llew Feb-21-2018
    Suggestion
How about, "I don't use housekeeping every day, but I leave a tip every time I do."

  • Susan Johnson Feb-24-2018
    additional choice and question
So the question that a lot of us seem to have is, does housekeeping have to pool their tips or keep what they collect? I agree with Llew's additional choice, should be added. And my tip is not per "night" but per cleaning. That's a particular difference since I never have the room cleaned every day.

    Housekeeping Poll
Will the poll give you a chance to check more than 1 box? I leave a tip every day, usually $3. While we are always neat and try not to make the housekeepers job difficult, I'm sure there are groups who crowd 5-6 people into a room for 2, and leave a mess. It is my understanding that housekeepers are timed on how long they take on cleaning a room.
That could be why sometimes housekeeping doesn't do a great job at cleaning (like the time I checked into Bally's and found a crumpled up $50 bill on the floor behind a chair), but this is not a job I would want to do.
