Question of the Day - 13 January 2021

Q:

Poll Preview: When eligible, will you get the coronavirus vaccination?

A:

This poll idea was suggested by Frank D. We know the topic isn't Las Vegas or gambling specific, but it certainly has implications for both. And it will provide first-hand corroboration or invalidation of the current conventional wisdom that more than 70% of Americans say they'll get a vaccine (up from 63% in August).

Polls we've seen on the question specify time frames ("Will you get vaccinated in the next month/three months/six months/12 months, etc."), but Frank D suggests, "No smartass answers, just yay or nay."

So what do you think, QoDers? Should we qualify the choices by time frames, motivations/deterrents, and/or smartass options? Or just go for the simple binary Yes or No?

    Better than binary
Could we not have the answers as:

a - I will be getting the vaccine because I am a reasonable individual and it’s the responsible thing to do in order to prevent getting and/or transmitting a highly contagious virus

b - I will not be getting it because I’m not in the high risk category and doing anything that doesn’t completely benefit me is socialism whereby I love my freedom

c - I won’t be getting it because I’m pretty stupid and there’s no real pandemic, it’s just been made up to scare people

d - I won’t be getting it because I’m really stupid and everyone knows that vaccines alter your DNA and are just an excuse for that evil Mr Gates to microchip all of humanity

I assume “Dr” Jerry will be along shortly to affirm his inclusion in the latter category

  • Dave Jan-13-2021
    Timing is changing
I used to say that it was developed and rolled out too quickly. Therefore I did not want to be the first one on line to get the vaccine. I wanted to wait just a couple of weeks to see how it shakes out before getting it.

But that ship has already sailed. It’s already been a couple weeks. So as soon as it’s offered to my demographic, I’ll be getting it.

  • O2bnVegas Jan-13-2021
    yes or no
    The rest doesn't matter.
    1. Yes I will take the vaccine. ("take" or "get"...whatever the English majors deem correct.)
    2. No I will not take the vaccine.

    @ Dave
I somewhat agree with you, BUT there seem to be age group side effects and different versions of the virus so I want to see those factors first, then decide the risk level to me before getting the shot or not if too risky.

  • jphelan Jan-13-2021
    Key Question
I think the key question is "Will you get the Covid-19 vaccine when offered for your specific situation (i.e. age, first responder, health considerations)?"

If people decline when offered, who knows when they will have the chance again.

  • mattyodotcom Jan-13-2021
    Wait a "couple weeks"????
To the people who simply want to "wait a while": These vaccines were given to tens of thousands of people, MONTHS AGO. Their safety and efficacy has been thoroughly demonstrated.
Taking a "wait and see" stance at this point is irrational.

  • black jack Jan-13-2021
    getting poked?
Since the vaccine is being administered already, how about another option:
“Yes, I have already received the shot.”

  • siwst852 Jan-13-2021
    3 choices vaccine
The people I know are in 3 categories:
    1. No way
    2. Yes as soon as I can get it
    3. Waiting for more information, side effects, period it actually gives protection for,if it gives protection against the newer strains etc. before deciding. They usually say about a year.

  • Sandra Ritter Jan-13-2021
    Along with Black Jack
I agree with Black Jack but I'd like to go one step further. I know you don't want to make this super long but info I'd like to know: I've been offered the vaccine and declined (perhaps worded better:)

  • O2bnVegas Jan-13-2021
    side effects
Potential side effects are transient (will go away) and cannot compare with the seriousness of Covid-19.

Allow me a true story. A friend got covid, serious case, including some fairly serious breathing difficulty. 6 months ago. Now recovered. She'd had head/neck cancer surgery some 10 years ago, recovered from that. Yesterday she had a routine MRI as followup to catch any recurrence of the cancer. When her doc looked at the MRI he said "You've had covid, haven't you." The lung damage from the covid could be seen on the MRI even though he wasn't looking for it. He said particularly in her upper lobes and is likely to be permanent. Get the damn vaccine!

    Agree with blackjack and Sandra
    Five options:
    1) I will get whichever vaccine as soon as it is offered to me
    2) I will get a PARTICULAR vaccine as soon as it is available to me (i.e. I want one vaccine type rather than another)
    3) I am inclined to get the vaccine but want to see more data first
    4) I will only get the vaccine if required to travel or work
    5) I do not intend to get any vaccine for any reason.

  • Deke Castleman Jan-13-2021
    This in via email
I've already received the first of two doses of vaccine. So you might want to add:
    1. Have you gotten the first of the two vaccine shots?
    2. If you've had the first shot, will you get the second shot?
    3. Have you received both shots and are now fully vaccinated?
    4. If you got the shot(s) did you have mild reactions?
    5. Severe reactions?
    6. No reactions?

  • Flaxx Jan-13-2021
    too many reasons
Too many reasons exist to get or not get the vaccine for the survey to list all of them. Also, you may want to relate the choices to LV, as in, "I will get the vaccine because I live here and I want Vegas to reopen and recover." Personally, one reason I will be getting the vaccine is so I can travel again, and get back to LV. That's an option LVA visitors may want on the survey.

  • mofromto Jan-13-2021
    In a word...
    ...yes!

  • Todd Hart Jan-13-2021
    Yes or No
    Just Yes or No.

  • Ray Jan-13-2021
    Still only 2 choices
With all the different disclaimers and ifs, maybe's and every other excuse to hedge, it still comes down to YES, I believe medical expertise, or NO I choose to be my own doctor. The reason(s) don't really matter. This isn't a debate. After answering, put your reasons in the comments next week. And no need to have a 3rd choice of those who already had one or both doses. THEIR answer is YES. They can also tell us why they did it in next week's comments.

  • Pat Higgins Jan-13-2021
    Bog tex
I will definitely get the covid vaccine as soon as possible. I have a lung disorder (pulmonary fibrosis) which like covid 19, attacks the lungs. All my doctors said yes get the vaccine ASAP. I have also taken my annual flu shot. Let’s get with the program and beat this disease.

  • [email protected] Jan-13-2021
    New York
I live in NY Governor Coumo said not to trust it. He wants his people to test and approve it so I guess I should wait for his approval.

  • Bobby Hart Jan-13-2021
    Done
Already got my first shot...no problems besides my arm falling off, a few oozing sores and the desire to sit under the street light and eat toads at night. Pretty normal stuff.

  • Kevin Lewis Jan-13-2021
Might as well be just yes or no
Because let's face it, all that matters is how many "yes" answers there are, and people who say "no" won't be honest about their reasons anyway ("I'm as dumb as a box of rocks," "Vaccines are the work of the devil," "Tucker Carlson told us not to," "I've never died before, so I'm immune," etc.).

  • Stephen Homner Jan-13-2021
    Already got mine
I have already received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine dude working in a hospital. No side effects even though the second dose people were saying makes you feel ill for a day.

  • Randall Ward Jan-13-2021
    vaccine
how about "already got it"? because I did and will get 2nd shot in 3 weeks. And yes I am planning my next Vegas trip, I haven't been anywhere since last March.

  • Adumb Jan-13-2021
    I’m stealing “Dave’s” answer
Dave summed it up perfectly, I couldn’t have said it any better so I’m am just copy and pasting his answer. - I used to say that it was developed and rolled out too quickly. Therefore I did not want to be the first one on line to get the vaccine. I wanted to wait just a couple of weeks to see how it shakes out before getting it.

But that ship has already sailed. It’s already been a couple weeks. So as soon as it’s offered to my demographic, I’ll be getting it.

  • Lora Jan-13-2021
    keep it simple
just yes or no - we don't need to hear everyone's reasons

  • Jackie Jan-13-2021
I get the fealing that my response was unclear
so know that only two vaccines are approved for EMERGENCY use only with a mid 90s effectiveness (that's 5% it won't work on) plus 50 other vaccines in development. Not to mention China is selling it's version of a vaccine which is showing poor results.

    So for everyone to get a better idea of what I was trying to get across, go here;

  • David Jan-13-2021
    Eventually
I'll eventually get one. I'm far from an anti vaxxer, but the new RNA based vaccine makes me pause. Last thing I want to do is protect myself from COVID and then develop Alzheimers 10 years from now. Look up Thalidomide for what happens when medicines get rushed out.

  • Jerry Patey Jan-13-2021
    Vaccine
Mr ayecarambapoker. Are you trolling? Won't work. Have you heard the old statement what do you get when you argue with an idiot ? Two idiots.

To others I don't take any vaccine that has not been tested. You cannot test a vaccine in 4 months. I could list a study on components and side effects of the vaccine. Published by a group of about 1000 international physicians. It is a scientific study and not political. Yes it does effect cells on surface of dna. Well you can say this is not effected your dna but that is splitting hairs.

For doubters in Gates look up his seminar on population control. You get see and read his lips one rec on population control was mass vaccination. By the way he received 10 bil from stimulus. I believe he did grad from hight school. He is not a scientist there he is no authority on vaccines. As he has financial interest in all the co his motive could be money. I don't care who gets vaccine. Take at your own risk. It is all about money. There are death

  • Daryl Jan-13-2021
    Bruce
I like AyeCarambaPoker's suggestions. It would be interesting to find out what the reasons are for those who won't get the vaccine.

  • Sam Glantzow Jan-13-2021
    now or wait
agree with jphelan: i'll get it when i'm eligible. those who wait should have to wait until the very end. sure; there are a few, rare, individuals who've had bad reactions but to question the entire vaccine is foolish

  • Leonard Accardi Jan-13-2021
Four Choices with Option to Comment
In my opinion, one of following four choices (YES, NO, MAYBE and ALREADY GOT PART OR ALL OF IT) must be selected, followed by the ability to comment, if desired. In this way, a Summary of the Survey Results would be a precise reflection of the possible options, and anyone wanting to review individual votes and corresponding comments could do so.

  • Richard Cameron Jan-13-2021
    No Vaccine for me
Not getting the vaccine. Already had the virus. I will assume the risk since reinfection is rare.

  • MannyB007 Jan-13-2021
    Vaccination
I will not be getting the COVID-19 vaccination for various reasons for which I am entitled to make that choice.

  • VegasROX Jan-13-2021
    Debate, New York, complications
What fun would a QOD be, without ccomments? Not much. New York Governor a scientist now?? NOT! How many more will die, while he fiddles. Complications..YEP..wife is a registered respiratory therapist and works every day in a COVID unit doing all she can trying to save lives, usually watching people die a very horrible death, alone with no family present. Those who live and leave, a large number have forever lung, brain, heart and other complications. There are over 384K dead folks who would have loved to have a chance at getting the vaccine! Why worry about something that could affect you 10 years down the line when COVID infections kill many within 10 DAYS. Yep, I'll get it soon as its offered to me. I dont want my wife to have to watch me die a horrible death, knowing there isn't any possible way of saving those with the worst cases.

  • Texas Transplant Jan-13-2021
Should get into a little depth
"Yes or No forces a choice, but adding a few options might be more informative and catch some of the nuances.

Yes will get it as soon as i am eligible and can get an appointment.

Yes I will get the shot but only after it has been generally available for a 3- 4 months. Not 100% sure if the possible side effects

Yes, I already got my first shot.

No, I will not get it, I have an allergy to egg products, or had other past reactions that make me ineligible. If I cold get it i would.

NO, I will not get it. I am concerned about possible side effects

Shout out to Bobby Hart and AyeCarambaPoker- GREAT sense of humor!

  • Adam Cohen Jan-13-2021
    Slight change
I think Texas Transplant is right a slight change as I am sure there are people who will wait. As for me I can not get it soon enough. As soon as they let me I am going to roll up my sleeve and get short. (I am high risk and need to be able to get out of my house before I go crazy) I think there was a song by that name in the Rocky Horor Picture show

  • Donald McDougall Jan-13-2021
    Mr.
I think one or two timeframes would be useful, though I think the answers would be "within 30 days" or "not at all". I don't see how extra time would change the decision. Maybe add the vaccine manufacturers as options, as some may not trust American makers. Maybe some might believe the "conspiracy" theory that the vaccine implants a following device in the brains of recipients. So maybe allow for a simple statement of reasons for or against. Thanks

  • Susan Johnson Jan-14-2021
    Keep it straightforward
    I agree with floridalen
"Four Choices with Option to Comment
In my opinion, one of following four choices (YES, NO, MAYBE and ALREADY GOT PART OR ALL OF IT) must be selected, followed by the ability to comment"
The variety of reasons not to would be too many to list. It would be nice to see how many have already had the shot.
