Question of the Day - 11 September 2020

Q:

Poll Preview: Will you book or take a trip to Las Vegas without a vaccine for COVID-19?

A:

A couple of months ago, research firm and brokerage house Macquarie surveyed 417 adults ages 21 and up on their sentiments about planning a trip to Las Vegas. To the question, Will you visit the Las Vegas Strip without a vaccine for COVID-19, 65% of respondents answered no. Extrapolated to 2019 visitor volume, that equals 28 million potential visitors, compared to roughly 15 million who would.

The survey also asked if respondents would "feel comfortable" booking a vacation to Las Vegas before there's a vaccine. The results: 40% said they wouldn’t, while 12% said they would be OK to do that at the time of the survey and 30% claimed they would from one to three months later.

The survey also asked if COVID-19 would impact the duration of their stay in Las Vegas and 60% opted for no impact, with 37% staying for a shorter amount of time and 3% for longer.

Finally, compared to prior visits, 50% claimed they'd spend the same amount of money, 40% would spend less, and 10% would spend more.

Seeing the results of the Macquarie survey got us curious about how our readers would respond to the exact same questions a couple of months later. So here's what the poll will look like.

Will you visit the Las Vegas Strip without a vaccine for COVID-19?

Would you feel comfortable booking a vacation to Las Vegas before there's a vaccine?

Will COVID-19 impact the duration of your stay?

From a budget standpoint, how would a trip to Las Vegas compare with prior visits?

    Quarantine
If I were to visit Vegas, when I return home, I’d have to go into a 14 day quarantine. That’s a dealbreaker for me, and should be part of your survey.

    Dave's point
    Good point, Dave.

There are different circumstances creating a quarantine requirement: individual State requirement; immunocompromised person at home; upcoming medical clinic or procedure requirement (individual office requirement). Currently my state has no 'returning from travel' quarantine requirement travel outside the US. But these can change if things worsen. The question could be worded something like "If there is a quarantine requirement", which would cover most.

    Florida traveler
I live in Florida and I visited Las Vegas in July and August and I so look forward to my November trip. Kudos to DAB, ATL, & LAS for requiring and enforcing the use of a mask. In addition, Delta Airlines is second to none in safety precautions. The Caesars casinos I frequent do an excellent job as well of ensuring safety. Boyd casinos do a good job scanning you upon entry but are not as diligent once you enter. That said, a lot more people are wearing masks in Las Vegas tourist destinations than at my local supermarkets and public places in Florida. I have NO problems visiting your fine city .

    What, me worry?
Waiting for Dr Patey to log in and let us know the whole COVID-19 thing is just another deep state hoax....

    Covid Survey
I would add: Have you already visited Las Vegas? We have already gone, in June, to Las Vegas. I was impressed with how much was being done to help guests be safe, especially at the Bellagio, where we stayed.

  • mofromto Sep-11-2020
    Not until...
Casinos in Canada where I live are still closed as they are considered too high risk. If I went to Las Vegas I would have to self-quarantine for 2 weeks on my return which I am not prepared to do. So until either a vaccine or a magic cure pill is found, I shall have to forego my favourite vacation spot. On the bright side I am saving a lot of money!😄😄

    Booked
I'm booked for September 22nd. Ready to go.

  • JimBeam Sep-11-2020
I'm a local and the answer is no
I'm a local in Las Vegas and I won't even get a *haircut* right now much less visit The Strip.

Don't get me wrong, it's very tempting to do so. The entertainment/dining opportunities in Vegas is one of the reasons I live here. But there's plenty of research showing that hotel stays are a bad idea and the CDC is recently reporting that restaurant dining might be one of the worst things you can choose to do right now.

I cannot imagine that life will be fully back to normal for me without a proper vaccine. I don't think I'm alone in saying that.

    Its just not Vegas
Arrive in Vegas at 9.00pm drop luggage.... Play Black Jack until 2.00... head to the Station Oyster bar.... hang at the basement club at the Cromwell until 6.00am ... head to the Venetian pool and nap until they start breakfast service ... drink bloody marys until noon, head back to the room, sleep until 6.00pm, book a dinner for 9.00pm. get a shave and a trim at the Bellagio, play some more black jack until dinner, poke my casino host for vip entrance to a club..... and thats just the first 24hrs.

Well... >80% of that ain't happening...... its not the same Vegas experience of 24hr excess.... if I just want to gamble I can stay in my home town.

    Quarantine
As a regular visitor from the UK, this is the first year since 2003 we won't visit LV at least once. Any visit to any part of the USA would involve us in a two week quarantine on our return, not necessarily a dealbreaker, as we're retired, but very inconvenient.
The availability of a proven, effective vaccine would definitely increase the chance of us travelling anywhere outside the UK.
We're loathe to spend hours in a sealed tube rebreathing other peoples' air to travel anywhere overseas at present.

    Cases = 0
"Will you visit the Las Vegas Strip if there's no vaccine yet, but the number of positive cases of Covid-19 has been zero for a month?"

  • kafka45 Sep-11-2020
    poll
Not a chance in (you know where)... Zero..

  • Gramps Sep-11-2020
    trip
I'll be there the 9-15 till 9-23 I'm hoping masks are mandatory and there is a ban on smoking in the casinos.

  • Kevin Lewis Sep-11-2020
    Health considerations aside..
The Vegas experience just isn't nearly as good now. But the casinos are still charging full price--no bargains to be had! I think that's the dealbreaker for me--why risk my health for an experience that's a shadow of its former self?

  • gaattc2001 Sep-11-2020
We visited Las Vegas the second week of July...
from a neighboring state with no quarantine requirements, which definitely would have been a problem. Some relatives flew in from the Heartland, and we all stayed at a non-gaming property near the airport.
We visited three off-strip casinos and one on. It was the first time I'd set foot in any strip property in many years, but we wanted to try a specific restaurant, and didn't even enter the casino. I assumed the limits were high and the games unplayable, and didn't bother to check--wouldn't want to undermine my preconceived opinions.
We did play some Blackjack, Video Poker, and real Poker (including tournaments) at the other three places. Most but not all restaurants were open, and the distancing and sanitation procedures were impressive. How effective is another question, of course.
I'd have no problem going back under similar circumstances, with or without a vaccine. I was more worried about breaking down at 110+ degrees in the desert, than about Covid.
    Cheers.

    With or Without
The casinos have made their slot clubs so bad that we won't visit Las Vegas with or without a vaccine. We went in June and left the next day feeling very unsafe. The Vegas experience-2020 is a casualty of Covid-19. If gambling in smoke filled casinos and paying inflated restaurant prices is your thing, then this Vegas is for you.

  • Jerry Patey Sep-11-2020
    Vegas
Did you watch The Men in Black. Tommy lee jones is setting on The park bench with Will Smith. He describe Americans ar stupid dangerous and ignorant I change order to SID’s Do any of you know the vaccine causes change at multiple points on your DNA strand. The test is very scientific. They have a placebo group and group that gets the vaccine. They see if it decreases disease rate in vaccine group. As10-15% of public test pos for antibody This is not a good method. The gov has bough 1 million doses for 2 billion or 100 dollars per dose. A good windfall for Gates and Fauci owned vaccine companies. Are you all going to line up and be the Ginny pigs. . Are you a SID? If shoe fits wear it. I can already hear leftist rants.

  • Raymond Sep-11-2020
    Ray
This is my take on the Virus and the vaccine. If and when a vaccine becomes available it will not be effective unless everyone gets the vaccine and we all know now that people do not get vaccines now because of various reasons such as they get sick from vaccines, religious beliefs and many other reasons. Just look at the number of parents who do not get their children vaccines. So I don't believe the vaccine will be the answer.
Now the Covid virus I am 67 seven years old and have touched every surface that a hand can touch in places all over the world including Disney, the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, stayed in Tokyo, visited the holy sites in Jerusalem ( of which everyone touches every thing holy) at times when many other diseases were prevalent and nothing was being sanitized. Things are not going to get better because peoples immune systems wont be able to fight the any diseases. Previously doctors said your body needs germs to build up your immune system.

  • Jerry Patey Sep-11-2020
    Covid
I will not schedule a try to Vegas until all the nonsense with masks temp checks machines I can play Etc. There are many like me. Will old Vegas return.? If not it will continue dying.

  • DwWashburn9 Sep-11-2020
    Very Dangerous
I ventured into a Stations Casino recently because my points were about to expire. I've never felt so uncomfortable. It's difficult to keep the gaming area sanitized when the suits lay off a substantial amount of personnel. I had to sanitize all areas I went into. Also mask regulations were not enforced. As I walked through the casino I saw countless people with their masks around their neck or hanging from their ears. It was a germ factory that even a vaccine is not going to eliminate entirely. I'll venture back after a well tested vaccine hits the market but not before.

I did go to Tahoe this summer and casinos seem safer that most public venues, but I don't want to spend a week without all the other activities and that's where the major hazard is.

  • Patricia Sep-11-2020
    Yes Curious
I have rescheduled my Vegas trip 4 times So I am not going to change again Currently for
October 23 The positive number going down My state California starting to open more
I am disappointed no entertainment. Yet seems museums and exhibits some are open
I haven’t seen any lately so something to do. Plus I learned there are dinner shows allowed and
available. So yes I am going but Dry careful I even brought face shield
I do feel Flamingo will clean rooms well I am tired of living in a bubble Plus California has
A lot of fires So we are also living with smoke thus heavy pollution
So is it ideal NO Yet going out to the grocery store or curbside dining in California a risk
We can only do our best Last not to mention vaccine are not a 100 percent They are possibly being released too soon

    Reasons Why
I wonder what people's reasons would be why they would/wouldn't visit. For some it may be because of income or worry during the pandemic or even just to make a political statement. You never know in today's world what drives people. On another note: @black jack got his wish, Dr. Patey has logged in and given his diagnosis for the day. O__o

  • O2bnVegas Sep-11-2020
    mirror the other survey
What is the difference between "Will you visit?" and "Would you feel comfortable booking a vacation?"

And why "the Las Vegas Strip", instead of just "Las Vegas"?

In keeping with comparison with the Macquarie survey:

     - I would visit Las Vegas without a vaccine for COVID-19.
     - I would not visit Las Vegas without a vaccine for COVID-10.
     - COVID-19 will not impact the duration of my stay.
     - COVID-19 will shorten my stay.
     - COVID-19 will lengthen my stay.
     - I will budget the same amount as for prior visits to Las Vegas.
     - I will budget more than for prior visits.
     - I will budget less than for prior visits.

    No to Casinos.Yes to Bars
I live in Vegas and went back to casinos a few times after they opened but never felt safe in them. Very few safety precautions were being done in any of them, so I switched to bars for my gambling experiences. They were doing a much better job of keeping patrons safe. Despite the inconvenience of not being able to play on bartops now, I'll still give my action to these establishments that are doing a good job of sanitizing and distancing people. Even after a vaccine is introduced and the Covid problem is greatly reduced, I'll probably continue the current pattern as I'm finding the bars take better care of their customers than the casinos do.

    To my friends...
John--glad you've seen the good in Vegas casinos. Thanks for reporting.

pixie--Glad to hear Bellagio is doing good. We will be there soon.

mofromto--Quarantine sure is a downer. Hope things ease up for ya'll.

    thebeachbum--Good for you...have fun!

jay--You sure do a real Vegas visit. Hope the good stuff returns soon.

Dr. J. Patey--No ginny pig, but I'd be a guinea pig given the chance.

Roy--I'd also like a real COVID y/n poll. The whys and why nots?

Gramps--I'm with ya on a smoking ban. Are we wishful wishing?

PackerBackerAZ--Shame on that casino. Which one was it? Do tell!

I love all the perspectives, pos or neg, go or no go.

    Candy

Lots of reasons other than vaccine
As so many of the comments have shown, a vaccine is not the only consideration. For many, the vaccine has little or nothing to do with it, but other state or local restrictions are critical. For others, even a vaccine is not enough to make them comfortable. So I think we will all answer the question, (vaccine y/n) but that won't really tell the whole story. Even those that have already gone may have a different perspective, and those who are going may change their minds after going.

Probably a preliminary question would be "How much "back to normal" must VEGAS be, before I go back".

  • Doug Bergman Sep-11-2020
    Maybe
But if I went, I would do different things. Spend more time outside at the pool, hiking in red rock canyon, and going to non casino restaurants. Try to stay out of casinos as much as possible.

  • NeonGlo Sep-11-2020
    Not the vaccine, the numbers
We wouldn't go back to Vegas until case numbers are way down, vaccine or no vaccine. Then drinks and entertainment will come back, and we can enjoy it safely. When it seems close to normal, we will return and spend more than usual, in celebration.

  • Donzack Sep-12-2020
    I’ll return if
Mandatory masks, no smoking, jack up the video poker tables.

    Gamblers ????????
    WOW !!!
I guess the defination of "Gambler" has been changed.
With the exception of a very small number of respondents, I've never seen a more sad bunch of, what are supposed to be, gamblers.
It seems to be a reflection of what our great country has become.
If we were to fight the second world war with what we have for a population at this time, I fear we would all be speaking German.
Herd immunity is the only end to the Chinese WuHuFlu and the reaction to it, for whatever reason, has only been to extend the time it takes to achieve that end.

    Dr. J. P.
COVID-19 (Dr. J.P.) You have blown your cover . You are now not pushing your hoax angle since the airing of the Woodward recording of The Force to Bob Woodward and testifying of its potency. You are attesting that you can’t return to Vegas until there is not a need to wear a mask. I humbly accept your admission and I Promise to wear mine as often as I need to at home or while in Vegas. By any means necessary.
