Question of the Day - 11 September 2019

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: day trips from Las Vegas

A:

This is the second survey we're conducting based on your selections from the choice of polls in a previous preview and it's one we've never conducted before. We're interested in this poll for possible coupon solicitations and potential coverage in the Las Vegas Advisor newsletter.

As usual, let us know in the comment boxes if we've missed any day trips, which we're defining here as close enough to go there and return to Las Vegas in one day. So yes, that includes the Grand Canyon South Rim (the round-trip bus trip is grueling, but you don't spend the night outside of the city). Same with Death Valley, and Zion and Bryce national parks, though at 530 miles round-trip, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is a stretch.

As such, we've organized the trips not alphabetically, but geographically; the closer the destination, the higher on the list.

We'll vote on this poll a week from today. Thanks for participating, then and now.

Spring Mountain State Park

Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area

    Southwest direction
I realized you hadn't included anything back down I-15, and I considered that while that's nothing but 150 miles of empty dreck until Barstool, not exactly a desirable destination, it's only another hour+ from there to Big Bear Lake--meaning you could get up there in under four hours from Vegas. It's plausible as a skiing destination or as a way to escape the summer heat. (There's not a lot to do on Mt. Charleston.)

    None of the Above
Could you add this as a choice? Honestly, I visit Vegas to gamble, nothing else. I am not a fan of expensive food or concerts either. I just like to gamble.

    Day trips
I notice that Pahrump is listed, but to be more specific there are two wineries in the area that make for the day trip- Sanders Family Winery & Pahrump Valley Winery. While neither may knock your socks off, they are worth a visit

    Now I'm confused
We went to South Rim once and it seemed so far. I've been to Bryce Canyon 3 times and it didn't seem as far as South Rim. I just put them through Google Maps and I think you have them in the wrong order.

    Distance? / Seven Magic Mountains
Shouldn’t Seven Magic Mountains be listed? While it’s not necessarily worth a trip on its own, it’s certainly with a stop if you’re passing by anyway.

Listing them by distance makes it hard to find stuff. Grouping the list geographically would be a help.

And personally, if I saw a list where things were grouped geographically, I might have seen 7MM on any of my five original trips to Primm. Yeah, it was prior to my sixth trip to Primm where I learned about 7MM and went.

Side note: two of those trips to Primm were on my way to Laughlin.

    Death Valley
Why isn't Death Valley listed? Not to mention the nearby ghost town Rhyolite.

    trips
most are too far to me, and I wouldn't lump rafting in with Hoover Dam.

    Additions
I did not see Jean, which you could go to after seeing the Seven Mountains. I would separate Mt. Charleston and the Lodge at Mt. Charleston (as they are two separate things) and given it's owned by the Ellis' maybe you could get a coupon our of it. LVMS racing of any kind is a day trip.

    Day trips
Took a ride to Terrible Herbsts , worlds largest Chevron Gas station with 96 gas pumps.
Located in Jean, NV about 10 miles SW of the M Resort on I15. Lots to see
But souvenirs are very over priced. They even have candy from the 50’s.
A day trip to Laughlin via going over to Hoover Dam bridge is about 1 1/2 hrs or so each way.

    Area 51
I would add Rachel/Area 51. We have made the trip twice with different couples...a fun take in

  • Donald Levkus Sep-11-2019
    Don L.
Black River / Willow Beach River raft tour. Have done it a couple of times, always been enjoyable.

    destinations
You mention trying to decide on possible coupons, but just list geographical areas. While some are just a destination such as valley of fire or red rocks, others have specific activities which to me would be a better type of poll. I would use lake Mead as an example. I like to go to the lake to do the boat trip over to Hoover dam on the "paddlewheeler", but there are also ski and pontoon boats and personal watercraft for rent. Or you can drive along the lake until you get to valley of fire and then drive through that and take the highway back to Vegas. I think there might be houseboats for rent also, but haven't explored that option (I want to be close to a casino when I come to Vegas). Also, there are places where you can go to tour old ghost towns or to a dude ranch or just to ride 4 wheelers or shoot guns, I consider these day trips as well since you're getting out of town for the day. Another trip is driving up to mount Charleston and doing some hiking or day drinking in the lodge.

    Day trips
How about the Pioneer Saloon in Jean? Not too far up I-15 and you pass Seven Magic Mountains on the way!

    outdoors
Moapa Valley Natl Wildlife Refuge, Lost City Museum (Overton), drive 167 (Northshore Drive) along Lake Mead, Gold Butte (south of Riverside/Bunkerville/Mesquite) first half is rough but paved, Camel Safari (Riverside/Bunkerville), Pahranagat Natl Wildlife Refuge.

  • jeepbeer Sep-11-2019
    outdoors 4x4
drive the Gold Butte loop and/or clear to Lake Mead (various places), go anywhere in Grand Canyon-Parashant Natl Monument (but be ready to be more than 80 miles from pavement), drive Shivwits to Caliente, then south thru Rainbow Canyon to Mesquite, petroglyphs in Mt. Irish Wilderness (Hiko) or White River Narrows (just North), drive Corn Creek back to I-93 thru Peek-a-boo Canyon/Mormon Wells. Lots more.

  • jeepbeer Sep-11-2019
    outdoors Rev A
I should add Moapa Valley NWR is very kid friendly, google it, lots of nice trails/signage and via a cut in the hillside a stream is viewable like a fish tank, so you can see the endangered fish.

    trips - not
You should add: "We don't do trips out of LV".

  • Margaret Dolan Sep-11-2019
    Day trip
Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Nice trails, visiter center, great for birding. If you have 4 wheel drive lots of off roaring but not necessary to enjoy trails from visiter center. About 30 miles north on Hwy 95.
