Question of the Day - 20 February 2019

Q:

Poll Preview: Where do you like to gamble?

A:

This is the preview for a poll that was suggested by a reader (thank you, Pahrump Jackie) that we’ve never run before.

Now that casino gambling is accessible practically everywhere in the world, we’re curious as to the gambling destinations where you most like to play. Do you prefer to get on a plane to travel to Nevada or some exotic international locale? Or would you rather stay closer to home and drive to the nearest good casinos?

We haven’t listed all the possible destinations in detail, so for the poll preview, if you believe we’ve missed important gambling jurisdictions, or even just those where you like to play, please let us know in the comment boxes. This poll will run a week from today.

That's a lot but there are more
Missing are several Nevada city's. Californians play Reno, Arizonans play Laughlin, and I play Pahrump. Why go to Vegas when all it offers is higher advantage, expensive shows, numerous BS fees for nothing used, and some shopping but nothing that could be got on line. Otherwise, every place I've been is listed, and that includes Reno and Laughlin, but not Jean.

    Oklahoma
Winstar is the "world's largest casino" according to their advertisements!

  • slickmv Feb-20-2019
    Another Option
Perhaps you could include an option for "Other Nevada" for the folks who prefer Tahoe, Jackpot, Elko, Wendover, Mesquite, Pahrump, etc.

  • gaattc2001 Feb-20-2019
    Phoenix/Tucson, Arizona;
Albuquerque & I-40 corridor, New Mexico; Los Angeles area card rooms; Lucerne, Switzerland; and several small towns in Oklahoma. Some of these I haven't been to lately, but might check them out if I'm back in the area.
We've been going to Laughlin a lot in the last few years, but recent changes there like the "Golden" acquisitions and the cancellation of our favorite BJ tournament may change that. Same for some of the Las Vegas off-strip houses. I'd go some distance for an attractive game, but wouldn't cross the street to play 6-5 Blackjack.
In the words of the great Florenz Ziegfeld: "When people want to stay home, nothing will stop them."

    Oklahoma day trip
With no casinos in Texas, Texans drive to Choctaw or Winstar, both within a few miles of the Red River. There are always more Texas license plates than Oklahoma's in the parking lots.

  • Sandra Ritter Feb-20-2019
    Chicago Area?
Let's give Chicago some respect. There's Chicago Rivers, Joliet, then a few places in northwest Indiana. I hate Rivers, stopped going to Harrahs Joliet and now go to Hammond Horseshoe, but there are others down there. How about breaking that out like you did PA?

    Preference option
Is it worth having an option to choose between Reservation Casinos (Foxwoods, Cache Creek, Thunder Valley, etc) and Corporate Casinos (Caesars, MGM, etc)? While some native american casinos are operated in partnership with more traditional brands I'm sure there are folks that prefer the independent tribal casinos to corporate ones regardless of their locale so maybe make that an option.

    Arkansas
Oaklawn Race Track (and Casino--now has a fancier name) in Hot Springs, Arkansas, is popular with those who prefer a shorter distance/shorter gambling trip. And it is expanding big time (building a hotel and expanding the casino, as is the Southland Racing (dog track and casino). There are four more casinos on the drawing board in Arkansas.

Also in Mississippi is Isle of Capri (Hotel and Casino) which is just over the Mississippi River bridge from Arkansas. Remote from Tunica and very remote from the Gulf Coast, but a lot of people prefer it.

  • steve crouse Feb-20-2019
    Maine
Although I don't gamble there much, there are 2 casinos in Maine.
    Oxford, and Bangor.

  • Flaxx Feb-20-2019
    Too many options?
As you say, "casino gambling is accessible practically everywhere" so you will diffuse the vote and minimize its significance by having so many choices. Maybe narrow it down to Vegas, elsewhere in Nevada, ACNJ, and something like "the casino closest to me" or "my local casino" or some choice that indicates if not the local casino, then something within driving distance. That is, if your goal in running the poll is to see whether people prefer Vegas to elsewhere; otherwise you might get a bump for Vegas and then a geographical representation of where your readers are.

  • Dennis Chartier Feb-20-2019
    Sharky
How about Wisconsin casinos. At 26 listed throughout the state. SE, North, West, Northwest. Yes, all Indian casinos but all over. They even have their own hotels.

  • Allen Banick Feb-20-2019
    What about Asia?
Singapore and Macau are both huge gambling markets. Most of us wouldn't take the 15-20 hour flights to get there, but I bet some will!

  • Pamela Feb-20-2019
    New York City?
Pennsylvania gets 3 regions and all New York gets is "The City"?! There may be racinos, but, according to vpFREE2, all of the real casinos are west of the Hudson River.

  • Rick Sanchez Feb-20-2019
    Vegas
Lived in Chicago are in between Rivers and Elgin and maybe went to Rivers once a year. I was asked why I didn't go more and my response was "Once you have been to Mecca why bother with the rest." Nothing beats the Vegas experience. Now the casinos are doing their best to kill that experience with parking fees, resort fees, breathing the air fee and any other thing they can think of charging a fee for.

  • Vadastaha Feb-20-2019
    Louisiana-LakeCharles
Louisiana- Lake Charles- has several casinos, including Golden Nugget and L’Auberge. Being from South Texas, if I am not going to Vegas, I go to Lake Charles. As do many from Houston, etc.

  • MIgirl Feb-20-2019
    Both, but...
Love! Vegas, but living In Michigan, can’t always be there. So Michigan has lots of casinos. We prefer Soaring Eagle in Mt. Pleasant and Firekeepers in Battle Creek. But, yes, we love the Las Vegas experience, so go 4 times a year for at least 2 or 3 weeks! However we also hate the recent greed—and sleaze! We try to have balanced trips and see shows (Frankie Moreno especially); shop—at Ross! Haha!; see movies; sleep!; have morning coffee and read the news—for hours; take a day-trip; etc.) So, yes, we love our Vegas trips! Just got back a week ago; will be back in early April! Can’t wait!

My favorite place is Downtown Vegas because of so many choices within walking distance. I only go to Vegas about once a year though so several times a year I can go to Downtown Detroit and have 3 casino's a short drive from each other or cross over to Canada for Caesar's. I can be at Firekeeper's in Battle Creek in 2 hours where I normally have a free night and food discounts. Tons of Native American Indian casino's in both the upper and lower peninsulas which makes it great for vacations.

May want to "sub-divide" Las Vegas a little
Las Vegas has a lot of very distinct options as to where to gamble. Each could add some interesting information. I suggest:
       "Las Vegas - Strip"
"Las Vegas - Downtown / Fremont Street"
"Las Vegas - Other "local's" Casinos"

  • Frank Mabry Feb-20-2019
    Not Just Chicago
Wisconsin has the Potawatomi large casino near Milwaukee and Ho-Chunk Gaming in Wisconsin Dells. The Quad cities (Illinois/Iowa) has 3 casinos.

  • Dave in Seattle. Feb-20-2019
    Nevada and Washington State.
    In Las Vegas I'm downtown!
There are 3 Indian casinos within 30 minutes of Seattle that I have gambled in.
      Haven't gambled in Canada,yet.
Many Canadians come to Las Vegas for some fun.
      I don't DO Reno,anymore.

  • Bumbug Feb-20-2019
    Upstate New York
You list New York City but not other areas in New York state. There are several casinos I've visited in the Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Syracuse areas that I'd like to visit again.

  • Raymond Morse Feb-20-2019
    Minnesota
Minnesota has popular Indian casinos. Mystic Lake, Treasure Island, Grand Casino

  • richard haas Feb-20-2019
    just a hick from pa.
love vegas,we come twice each year, however I now also have another love for mesquite and Laughlin. and will visit each trip. I am afraid that vegas is losing out to these locations because of the nickel and dime attitude of the casino management.if it were not for the great shows and resturants there would be little reason to come there at all. rh

  • jeepbeer Feb-20-2019
    Favorite
    Mesquite.

  • Linda Barnes Feb-20-2019
    QODSurvey
You should add Louisiana-Lake Charles and Louisiana-Baton Rouge. We live in Texas and the two locales are our favorite and most convenient gambling locations.

  • Wayne Van Lone Feb-20-2019
    gambling
    one more. where's jean grosjean?

  • Roy Furukawa Feb-20-2019
    Foreign?
I don't know what you're aiming for with the results, but I'm wondering if many LVA readers go internationally to gamble. Can they be grouped under "international" or by region (Asia, Europe, Caribbean, etc.) rather than by country to limit the choices? I agree with some others that it seems like too many choices.

  • Seamans Feb-20-2019
    where I like
I live in Texas. I have to travel 5hrs by car to get a decent gamble. My favorite place is downtown LV followed by Laughlin NV.

  • Ray Feb-20-2019
    How many choices?
Will we need to choose a favorite place? (Impossible) or be able to click on many choices? if so, you'll need to add almost all of the additional suggestions to an already lengthy list.

  • Theresa Bolster Feb-20-2019
    Indiana
The casinos in NW Indiana. Horseshoe, Majestic Star I and II, Ameristar.

  • Bill Feb-20-2019
    It's the destination...
LAS VEGAS mostly, and LAUGHLIN sometimes... Plus, I'm going to MACAU next month. Could gamble at home in California but I don't; I enjoy saving my gambling money for destination vacations.

  • [email protected] Feb-20-2019
    Bahamas & London
The Caribbean and casinos in UK, Louisiana etc.

  • Julie Feb-22-2019
    Upstate NY
I think you should include upstate NY casinos. Resorts World in Monticello, NY. Plus the many Reservation casinos more upstate. (There is WAY more to NY than just the "City")
