Reader Poll Preview: Why do you still come to Vegas?
Here's your preview of the poll we'll be running next Wednesday in its entirety.
We know it'll be tempting to expound on your reason(s) for continuing to visit our fair Sin City, but please, save those for the poll itself. Today, we're just looking for more choices about which to poll. And thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide toward making this a better survey.
Here's the question:
A comment on the triple-zero roulette Question of the Day page got our attention: "Don't tell me about visitor counts. Las Vegas is imploding as gambling continues to be depreciated. Slots are too tight, video poker pay schedules are bad, blackjack rules are twisted beyond recognition, roulette is under attack, etc."
Add to that all the complaints we field day in and day out, on this website and via other means, about resort fees, parking charges, comp cutbacks, backoffs and barrings, crowds, traffic, and on and on and it reminded us of a poll we ran 10 years ago, which we're revisiting here: What's your main reason for visiting Las Vegas?
In other words, with the myriad other gambling destinations in the U.S., all the exotic travel experiences beyond our borders, and the consumer-unfriendly changes gripping Las Vegas, why do you continue to come here?
Here are the choices so far:
It’s my favorite place to gamble, period.
Because even with rising prices, it's still one of the least expensive vacations I can take.
To generally indulge my wild side, which I can't do back home or in other smaller tamer gambling destinations.
For conventions or trade shows.
For the restaurants and variety of entertainment.
For the high-end stores and extensive malls.
For the outlet stores and discount shopping.
To get away from the families with children that visit most big-city tourist destinations.
Mainly for the poker rooms, since online gambling was banned.
My spouse loves it and I don't, but I won't let him/her go alone.
For the dayclubs, nightclubs, and pool parties.
For the paid sex.
For the free sex.
For the free drinks.
I visit friends and/or family.
Doctors appointments.
For one, some, and all the reasons you cite in the question, and others of my own, I no longer come to Vegas.
My reasons: - BARGE (and its "little brother" EMBARGO) - weather. I was able to stay about 6 weeks this winter. No snow! And the unseasonably warm weather was a bonus. - great video poker. No full pay games anywhere near my home anymore. But boo to the Fremont for downgrading their Pickem pay tables; was my favorite game. - poker. Best assortment of games and tournaments at all levels - friends. Several of my friends have relocated to Vegas; love visiting them and catching up. - sightseeing. Loved my drive from PA to LV. Such different topography - are beautiful! Hanging out with friends along the way was a blast. And alway love seeing and experiencing new things. Oh, and I love how the mountains surround the city. - dining. Love the variety of foods, especially ethnic dishes. Yum!
