Question of the Day - 13 June 2018

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: Why do you still come to Vegas?

A:

Here's your preview of the poll we'll be running next Wednesday in its entirety.

We know it'll be tempting to expound on your reason(s) for continuing to visit our fair Sin City, but please, save those for the poll itself. Today, we're just looking for more choices about which to poll. And thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide toward making this a better survey.

Here's the question:

A comment on the triple-zero roulette Question of the Day page got our attention: "Don't tell me about visitor counts. Las Vegas is imploding as gambling continues to be depreciated. Slots are too tight, video poker pay schedules are bad, blackjack rules are twisted beyond recognition, roulette is under attack, etc."

Add to that all the complaints we field day in and day out, on this website and via other means, about resort fees, parking charges, comp cutbacks, backoffs and barrings, crowds, traffic, and on and on and it reminded us of a poll we ran 10 years ago, which we're revisiting here: What's your main reason for visiting Las Vegas?

In other words, with the myriad other gambling destinations in the U.S., all the exotic travel experiences beyond our borders, and the consumer-unfriendly changes gripping Las Vegas, why do you continue to come here?

Here are the choices so far:

It’s my favorite place to gamble, period.

Because even with rising prices, it's still one of the least expensive vacations I can take.

To generally indulge my wild side, which I can't do back home or in other smaller tamer gambling destinations.

For conventions or trade shows.

For the restaurants and variety of entertainment.

For the high-end stores and extensive malls.

For the outlet stores and discount shopping.

To get away from the families with children that visit most big-city tourist destinations.

Mainly for the poker rooms, since online gambling was banned.

My spouse loves it and I don't, but I won't let him/her go alone.

For the dayclubs, nightclubs, and pool parties.

For the paid sex.

For the free sex.

For the free drinks.

I visit friends and/or family.

Doctors appointments.

For one, some, and all the reasons you cite in the question, and others of my own, I no longer come to Vegas.

    Actually DON'T go as often
Due to rising prices and bullshit fees, etc, I just don't go to Las Vegas as frequently as I once did. Been there, done that, got the chip collection to prove it.

    Cutting way back

    b) excellent variety of ethnic restaurants
    c) something to do 24/7/365

I own a worthless timeshare in Vegas. I can't sell it. I can't give it away. So I'm forced to use it.

  • Ray Jun-13-2018
    Why?
You say, the MAIN reason you still come to Vegas, but there are and always have been multiple reasons. I think it would be unfair to try to narrow it down to one main reason.

    Variety
For the large variety of things to see and do, along with people watching.

  • Doug Bergman Jun-13-2018
    a few more reasons
    1. The decadence: It's still the place where you can indulge, live large, and let it all hang out without anyone passing judgment.

    2. The value: I know how to stretch my dollar by avoiding places with fees and using LVA. Even though hotels and restaurants cost more than they used to, the market is still somewhat competitive (or very competitive in the case of restaurants) and the standard of quality is pretty high.

    3. It's always been my happy place.

    4. Whatever Westie said. He's right about pretty much everything.

    Why Vegas
Variety of casinos, dining, shows (especially for us headliners, we've seen all the others), the weather (we live in the north), and shopping. Plus, it's an easy vacation - lots of plans or no plans - it is lots of fun!

  • Pamela Jun-13-2018
    There's only one Vegas
We don't go as often, but it's because of my husband's difficulty traveling and getting around, but we still try to go once a year, because there's no other place like it. We have lots of great memories of trips over the past 25 years.

We like to reminisce and take in all of the atmosphere and new additions. It's an indescribable feeling that we don't get anywhere else.

    It's more than just casinos
One of the top reasons should be because of the savings you get with the LVA Member Rewards book. Plus, there's more than just the casinos here for fun and entertainment.

LV remains one of the places I can go to forget about all the responsibilities of home. How can you fret about minutiae when you're sitting in front of a dealer or slot machine or vp? It's also a place to escape overwhelming sadness and even grief, if only for a moment or two.

  • Patrick Jun-13-2018
    Why Vegas?
Pure escapism. Still the Entertainment Capital Of The World. Love the pools in the summer. Gambling isn't a priority. New restaurants and old favorites, shows and concerts are still a draw. Sports books during college basketball and football season.

    Why come to Vegas
Can't find where to answer. Here are my reasons:
    1. Great weather (except summertime).
    2. Many places to visit and eat.
    3. Good local casinos. Go once a week.
    4. Wife likes to shop at thrift stores. Much cheaper than casino shopping.
    5. Driving on major streets is good, as long as construction is on route.

  • Toni Armstrong Jr. Jun-13-2018
    Still come to Vegas because...
    (1) Sent email with several more suggested options. (2) Enable voters to select more than one option. Even from your list above, I see a few for myself that are true. (3) THANK YOU! These polls are delightful.

  • Jersey Jeff Jun-13-2018
    Jeff
    1) The Weather (better than at home)
    2) Quality of resorts is better than alternative such as Reno, Tahoe
    3) Table games
    4) nightlife / top DJ's in the world
    5) see the Golden Knights
    6) see the Raiders (they are in my future plans!)
    7) easy getaway weekend from CA

  • Theresa Bolster Jun-13-2018
    Many Reasons
It's a ritual. I've been coming at least once a year for the past 29 years. Also, love the scenery of Nevada, big change from Chicago. Love being able to visit more than one casino by walking / driving just a short distance. Still tons of things for the family to do if you go during the right time of year when it's not scorching hot.

  • Christine Jakubek Jun-13-2018
For 3 - 4 days of non-stop gambling where I am staying for free with comps and get a few free or discounted meals using comps and/or my rewards book.

    Theme park
The Las Vegas Strip is essentially a theme park all it's own, gambling permitted!

    Good Question
In October of 2016 we visited Las Vegas and stayed at the Mandalay Bay. Paid a bunch for a room. Paid a bunch more for the "Resort Fee". Not to mention show tickets (Plus Fees) and less than thrilling meals at several restaurants (Plus Tips). And finally as we were leaving we dumped even more for the privilege of parking our own car. We asked this same Question! Answer: We haven't been back to Las Vegas since.

  • [email protected] Jun-13-2018
There's no other place in the world like Las Vegas. So neat to visit and enjoy a different lifestyle.

  • Jeff Emerson Jun-13-2018
    Jeff
We come to Vegas once or twice a year down from 3 - 4 times. When we do come we avoid the strip.
We like the shows but when we go to one we use Uber to avoid parking fees and won't gamble at any place that charges for parking

  • Roy Furukawa Jun-13-2018
    Weed?
I don’t partake, but recreational weed is a secondary attraction now for people whose states don’t allow it. I doubt it’s a main reason to visit, but a perk if going for the gaming and nightlife. It seems every hotel on the strip caters to the clubbing crowd now.

  • Jun-13-2018
    Why?
    1. Inertia.
    2. Because I actually like walking around in a pizza oven.
    3. Because there is still SOME decent gambling there.
    4. The Tangerine Toilet keeps sending me room offers.
    5. Food's cheap. Ditto drinks.
    6. For the same reason that some people like be tied up and whipped.
    7. Easy to get to by plane.
    8. Enjoy all the festivals and special events, even though I have to pay $1800 a night then.
    9. I enjoy watching people throw up.
    10. I want to eat as much buffet food as I can before I die/explode (re that Monty Python sketch).

    Other
The warmer weather in winter (I live in Canada and it can go to -30 Celsius)

  • Llew Jun-15-2018
    So many reasons!
    My reasons:
    - BARGE (and its "little brother" EMBARGO)
    - weather. I was able to stay about 6 weeks this winter.
No snow! And the unseasonably warm weather was a bonus.
    - great video poker. No full pay games anywhere near my home anymore.
But boo to the Fremont for downgrading their Pickem pay tables; was my favorite game.
    - poker. Best assortment of games and tournaments at all levels
    - friends. Several of my friends have relocated to Vegas; love visiting them and catching up.
    - sightseeing. Loved my drive from PA to LV. Such different topography - are beautiful!
Hanging out with friends along the way was a blast. And alway love seeing and
experiencing new things. Oh, and I love how the mountains surround the city.
    - dining. Love the variety of foods, especially ethnic dishes. Yum!
