Question of the Day - 24 July 2020

Q:

You are continually taking surveys, yet I never see the results anymore. In the past, results were in a QOD about a week later. Why the lack of feedback?

A:

In April 2019, in a question about the number of Questions of the Day taken up by the polls (poll preview, poll itself, poll results, all times two per month), we asked for feedback about the issue. Then we ran a poll on it. Based on the consensus and our own priorities, we kept the poll preview as a dedicated QoD (adding up to two per month) and undedicated the other four in a month, opting instead to tack on the links at the bottom of the regular Q&As on the days that we post the the poll itself and the results.

Well, we've kept up on posting the links when the new polls begin every other Wednesday. But admittedly, we've kind of gotten out of the habit of posting links to the poll results from the poll that just ran. For this, we apologize.

From now on, we will post the link to the results when they're ready.

Before, we dedicated a QoD to the poll results on the Saturday after the old poll closed. The reason it took a few days to do so is that, though we can track the results of the voting in real time, the poll won't go live until a certain amount of text appears in the "Analysis" field in the back-of-the-house poll function. And it takes that long to do the analysis and compose the text.

Starting today (we're moving Results Day up one to Fridays), you'll find your poll link at the bottom of the QoD, which you can click to see the recent results. Deal?

If so (or even if not), here's the link to the previous poll on your favorite pages on this website

But we should add that you can also see the poll results for every poll we've ever conducted, simply by clicking the "Search the Archives" link at the top right of the poll page. That takes you to the pages with, currently, the 334 polls we've conducted since August 2007.

    was a mystery to me
For a long time I didn't see the "Search the Archives" for poll results. Then when I did, I didn't know to "click in the purple" to get the results in total. I guess I'm missing a few brain cells. But just in case anyone else is missing that cell, CLICK IN THE PURPLE!

Also, what is the rule concerning how long a poll stays up (for voting)? Seems like a long time, long past when votes and comments are coming in. Thanks.

    Polls run for two weeks
Candy -- The polls go for two weeks. This parameter was instituted when we first started running them. Why? I don't know. Who can remember that far back? But it's the way we've always done it, so it's the way we still do.

I know the responses die down after the first week, but I suppose it gives the stragglers time to find them and vote. Also, the polls tend to be challenging to come up with 26 times a year, let alone a possible 52. And if we ran them once a week, then there would be four poll previews, but based on the feedback from the poll poll, that's probably two too many.

So unless anyone has a highly compelling reason for us to change the status quo ...

    LVA Polls
I like that the polls are open for 2 weeks. It gives a chance for people to post comments that often point out things I haven't thought of and reading them sometimes affects the way I vote on the question. Some polls are more interesting to me than others, but that's the way the world works. The polls are part of the overall information sharing that the LVA website gives, so keep them coming. I hope they have some influence on the Vegas decision-makers, but even if not at least people get to voice their feelings.

    no prob
Gosh, it seemed much longer, and I do look at the date. I'm just too anxious! Keep what ya got, deke. It is fine.

No, we don't want a poll a week, no way! Good job always.

    Demographics
I just wish some of the polls had a secondary poll for demographics and that info used to present the results in a grid format.

And by demographics, I mean things like how you get to Vegas: local / usually drive / short flight / long flight, etc. I figure that kind of segregation would help interpret the results of certain types of polls.
