Question of the Day - 16 March 2022

Q:

Poll Results: If you could improve one thing about Las Vegas, what would it be?

A:

No question about it: Las Vegas resort fees remain public-enemy number one.

Public-enemy number two might surprise you or it might not, but it's inclusive of every other choice.

Third highest on the list is eliminating smoking in the casinos, which surprised us to a certain extent, given the disproportionate number of comments in the poll preview and on the poll page citing it as most important.

Number four, tied percentage wise with number three, is the return of the buffets. For our comment on the buffets and the rest of the results, here's the link to the poll.

    Smoking
Probably the reason that you had a higher number of comments than votes regarding smoking is because for those whom it is important for, it is very important. If one has breathing problems to begin with, even a short trip to Vegas can take a significant toll on health.

    Why the difference?
EVERYBODY despises resort fees. Those who want smoking banned needed to choose which was the worst evil. Anti-smokers may be a louder group, but they are not a larger group.

    Why do people hate smoking???
Actually, the people who hate smoking vastly outnumber those who hate resort fees--speaking of the public in general.

But specifically for casino patrons, you pay your resort fees once per stay--however annoying that may be--but you're forced to inhale awful stinking noxious disgusting piggy cigarette spew every moment you're in the casino (though, thank God, no longer in the restaurants). You sit down at a machine, you have to move some jerkass's disgusting used ashtray. You're playing your favorite video poker game, then some clown sits down next to you and lights up. Over and over and over and over and over. You can never escape it.

I really do wonder how smokers can justify their behavior. If they knew how unpleasant it was for nonsmokers to be forced to inhale their crud, maybe they'd relent? Naah. They're addicts, and addicts act solely to feed their addictions. I'm sure someone, somewhere, has killed their grandmother for a cigarette.

    Multi-choice
It would be really interesting to run the poll again, but this time allow multiple choice.

Excellent idea. I agree, it would be interesting. We'll do it. Thanks for the suggestion.

    to Kevin Lewis
You're speaking the truth about smokers, both in general and in casinos. I've found that, in everyday life, about 95% of smokers don't give a crap about the negative effect that their cigarette smoke has on other people. But when we're talking about smokers in casinos, the percentage is probably even higher because smokers are in "vacation mode" and are thinking about doing what they want to do, period. And if they're from California (which probably is where 1 in 3 Vegas visitors are from), they live in a state where smoking is banned in all public buildings, especially including restaurants, and so the freedom to legally smoke in a public building like a casino is a positive thing that they're obsessed with. But you don't have to move when a smoker sits down next to you. Anytime I play VP, I have a powerful small fan with me that I can hold in 1 hand and turn on if somebody lights up. Only once has someone objected to my fan, but I quickly set them straight as to who was the offender.

    ALMOST ALL OF THEM!!!
NO WAY I can pick just one of those!
