Question of the Day - 17 April 2019

Q:

Reader Poll Results: What would you like to see happen to the reader poll and results? And New Reader Poll: What's your favorite Las Vegas restaurant with an outdoor-dining option?

A:

First things first. Thank you all for voting in and commenting on how or if to change the QoD/poll-preview/poll/poll analysis status quo. For anyone who'd like to see the final count live, here's the link to the results from the poll on polls and poll previews.

The voting was pretty tight, as you'll see: The top choice (27%) was to separate the polls from QoDs, while the second-most (24%) was to leave the polls and results alone, but forgo the poll previews. Third place (21%) was to keep things exactly as they are.

Then there's our own preference, which all along has been to keep the poll previews and let the plurality rule on the rest. The poll preview is simply too valuable to us to divorce it from a dedicated Question of the Day, let alone do away with it entirely.

We need the poll previews to be QoDs of their own, but we feel it's a fair trade-off to undedicate the four QoDs per month to the polls and results. We'll announce and link to the polls and results in the applicable Wednesday and Saturday QoDs, but not devote entire QoDs to them.

Thus, only two QoDs per month will be devoted to polls, rather than six. We'll still get the benefit of the previews and you'll get four extra QoDs a month, in addition to being able to link to the polls and/or poll results and analyses in the usual fashion from the QoDs.

To wit: Here's the link to the new poll, the one on your favorite restaurants that have an outdoor-dining option, for which we ran a preview a couple weeks ago.

That's how it'll work. Every other Wednesday, either a dedicated poll preview or a QoD and a link to the new poll; every other Saturday, a QoD and a link to the results and analysis for the previous poll.

Fair enough?

When the polls are right on the QoD page, they may feel more accessible to readers than when you separate them. IOW, some people may not go the extra click to get to the polls, and you may find participation goes down — resulting in increased selection bias toward those who feel strongly enough about a survey to do the extra clicking. Or not. See what happens and you can always revert later on.
