Question of the Day - 28 February 2018

Q:

New Reader Poll: Do you leave a tip for your hotel housekeepers?

A:

In a recent Today's News entry, plus two recent Questions of the Day, we noted that housekeepers are nearly invisible when it comes to hotel guests leaving tips during and/or after their stay. Though the article cited in Today's News claimed that "more than two-thirds" of guests don't leave even a small tip, our own inquiries found that the percentage is even smaller, closer to 15%. We commented in the QoD that this was a good idea for a poll, so here it is.

    Not only in Vegas
Only in Vegas do we tip 10 bucks a night. $5 in most other hotels elsewhere and that includes WDW,m Arizona, Michigan, etc. Once (not Vegas) we had a traveling stained bedspread. We didn't tip there. Yeah it's for the usual stuff like more in-room coffee supplies (if avail.) but especially extra blankets for cold rooms, more pillows, etc. Most leave a "thank you".

    Oh yeah
    I tip $5 a day, and I leave a thank you note.

Use to, but not with the Resort Fees now
When I pay to rent a room for the night especially at a "resort" casino or hotel, am I just paying to use the Sq. Footage of the room, utilities and furniture ? I already have that at home. What I don't have at home are the services of housekeeping, valet parking, a large fitness center, a large pool, room service, things like that, which is why I would travel to stay at a casino or resort hotel. With the proliferation of extremely excessive resort and parking fees, tips for maid service is not something I do anymore as that should be built into the room rate, and now I guess the resort fee. I have 6 very nice "local" casinos within a 30 minute drive of my house if all I want to do is gamble. As Vegas becomes more ala-cart with fees for everything at the hotels, I am gambling more and more at my local casinos and doing without the hotel experience and visiting Vegas as often.

    Tips
I use housekeeping services about once every 3 days. I always tip at least $5 each time. (If I've stayed only one night it's $3). To me, it's the CODB. If you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't go. If you choose to not tip, shame on you (unless the service was bad). Housekeepers generally are poorly paid and rely on tips, just like good servers, valets, dealers, etc.
One exception (besides poor service): I noticed in Atlantic City that often, when I arrived in the room on the first day, kthere would be something missing in the room that should have been there. Nothing major, just small stuff. I'd request it from housekeeping and tip the person who brought it. After this occurred a few times, I felt like this might be a scam to get more tips. So now my "rule" is: if I request something that should have been there in the first place, no tip for bringing it to my room, just a polite thank you.

Yes, we always tip housekeeping whether in Las Vegas or not. These are the lowest paid people in the casino and work the hardest for little pay.

We always ask for extra toiletries to dispense at our local homeless shelter.

    Tips
Since I have to remake the bed 95% of the time, and something is wrong with the plumbing 50% of the time, I rarely leave a tip. When there is something wrong with the maintenance, I ALWAYS tell management before I check out.

    Always Tip
I always tip the housekeepers - usually $2 or $3 a day. I request early cleaning (9 am or so) since I like the room to be done before I come back for any reason. I tip every day so that the weekend staff doesn't get everything. I often get nice "thank you" notes, so I know it's appreciated. I beginning to notice more hotels outside of LAS leaving a tip envelope in the room with the name of your staff person. I think this is a nice reminder, since I think many people don't realize that tipping the maids is the right thing to do.
