On our last trip to Las Vegas, we noticed construction going on just east of the Palms, at the corner of Flamingo and Hugh Hefner roads. There is a sign saying this property is applying for a liquor and gaming license. Is there going to be a new casino there?
Not a casino, just a hotel. Maybe. Maybe not. It would take a lot of chutzpah to build a casino at that intersection, the nexus of the Palms, Gold Coast, and Rio.
The block of land between Hugh Hefner Drive and Valley View Boulevard is owned by overseas business interests, by way of Atlanta-based Pami Holdings LLC. When the Clark County Commission last visited the issue on Jan. 4, 2017, the project called for a multiple-use development. The component parts were residential units, retail, restaurants, financial services, a grocery store, at least one bar, a liquor store, and a pharmacy — quite a wish list. The gaming-license application was, as best we can determine, to facilitate the installation of one or more slot routes, probably bartop video gaming in the tavern(s).
The project managers requested and received several zoning variances. However, they were cautioned that “approval of this application does not constitute or imply approval of a liquor or gaming license or any other County-issued permit.” They were also warned that “this application must commence within two years of approval date or it will expire.”
Fast-forward a year. Currently, a sign identifies Hadfield Construction Company, which seems to have moved some dirt around, with surveying posts here and there, but that's about it. Considering the amount of time it would take to build a hotel and retail mall, we have to wonder if it could be finished in the time allotted, even if the owners were intending to try.
Meanwhile, a reliable source tells us the parcel is for sale. Due to its location, it should be a prize asset.
