Question of the Day - 25 September 2019

Q:

Reader Poll Preview: What's Your Favorite Thing To Do in Downtown Las Vegas?

A:

We last ran this poll in April 2011. To show you how much things have changed over the past eight and a half years, of the 31 choices in that poll, nearly half of them are obsolete. In fact, a half-dozen places no longer exist (Las Vegas Club, Mermaids, Girls of Glitter Gulch, Du-Par's, Flame Steakhouse, Western). So it's well past time to take a poll on the updated pulse of downtown.

Below are our choices for next week's survey. The first 16 are from the previous poll and alphabetized separately from the rest. Feel free to add any personal favorites we might have missed.

Aloha specialties at California

Buffet at Main Street Station

Bullhorns and bartop dancing at Hogs & Heifers

Cabana Rooms at El Cortez

First Fridays

Free entertainment on Third Street Stage

Fremont East bar scene

Hugo's Cellar

I don't like anything about downtown.

    Video Poker
The only reason I go Downtown is to gamble/play VP -preferably at 4 Queens Palace Bar aka 2 Mikes Bar.

  • Patrick Sep-25-2019
    Coupon run
Every trip I like to stay downtown for 2 nights to do the LVA coupon run.

  • Richard Kukis Sep-25-2019
    downtown reader poll
Hash House A-GOGO at The Plaza , The Citrus Grand Pool Deck at The Downtown Grand , And the 99 cents shrimp at the Lanai Express inside the Fremont.

    Gamble?
Why are there no gambling options on the list? Roulette at the EC? VP at 4Q or MSS? Craps at GG or EC or DTG? Bingo at the Plaza?

I love Fremont Street, but I wouldn't go if there weren't any gambling.

  • Dave Sep-25-2019
    Street performers
That should be at least two categories:

"Official" FSE Street Performers and Artists: Carl 'Safe Sax' Ferris, Spray paint artists, etc.

Unofficial performers / buskers of all sorts: Street magicians, break dancers, costume characters, etc.

Also, you list the Third Street Stage, but not the west end stage? Also, isn't there another stage?

Area 51 Viva Vision is the best show
The other Viva Vision shows are (at best) tame or (at worst) lame. The Area 51 VV show had a plot (aliens attack us and we win) and was fun (ending with an alien in Elvis get up playing blackjack).
As far as the buskers on Fremont, I don't know why the casinos don't buy that street (making it private property) so they can get rid of the worst. It's just not entertaining to me to see a homeless man trying to sell jars of his urine or a grown man in diapers or a woman in pasties.
And - as long as I'm whining - why did they have to build that giant concrete monstrosity at the west end of Fremont which blocks the view of the fabulous lights of the Plaza? Ok, I get that the Slotzilla zip line people have to come to a stop somewhere but the place they chose is awful.

I used to go downtown to play single deck Blackjack--does anyplace still offer that? Hugo's is still worth the trip. Also, the EL Cortez used to have better odds on Keno and a good sports book but I was unimpressed on my last visit there. Also, when we visited the Mob Museum there was a "street fair" going on (doesn't downtown host a number of outdoor events during the year?) Finally, I used a bunch of the coupons from the Advisor Member Rewards Book at various locations downtown.

We don't bother to go downtown. Personally don't think it is safe. Also a little too much "nakedness" for our taste--at least the last time we were there. We generally stay on the strip (Diamond Card at Caesar's properties) and we often hit some of the local casinos such as Gold Coast, Orleans, Station casinos, etc. We often hit a local casino as the Mrs. likes to hit some of her favorite stores out in the economy.

Here's a few of my downtown favorites
    A few ideas:

"Better Odds" Gambling - Can find much better odds downtown, 3/2 BJ,9/6 JoB video poker, etc. Plus a load of Matchplay LVA coupons, like $25 matchplay at Golden Gate, etc.

Street ARTISTS - NOT performers. there are some very talented artists that paint/exhibit downtown. One man does amazing art with spray paints.

Since you have The Main Street Station buffet on the current list I am assuming that restaurants can be added. here are several of my favorites places to eat

Chicago Brewing at Four Queens - - unbelievable THIN crust, meat-loaded pizza and tasty craft beers (you should review it sometime!)

    WHITE CASTLE!!

Feast Buffet at Palace Station - as LVA reviewed, I found it to be the best overall food value in Las Vegas

    Binions
We rarely miss stopping at Binions Steak House. Great view and OLD SCHOOL Vegas.

  • Dave Sep-25-2019
    STUFF
I would say Container Park for sure (we always go to Oak and Ivy for a drink), the restaurant duo of Hennesseys and Mickey Finzz to watch Rock bands every Friday and Saturday night, and the Blackjack, which is much, much better than on the strip.

  • kinosh Sep-25-2019
    Microcosm
No ONE thing in particular, but I like that everything is so much closer than the Strip. I can casino-hop without getting lost (if I do get lost, I can quickly find my way back - not possible on the Strip)

  • Aileen Kunisch Sep-25-2019

Drinking and chilling at the plaza bar
    Eating at Magnolias

    Neon Museum: Still There?
I thought that the Neon Museum that was on 3rd between Fremont and Ogden had pretty much been decimated, with most of the old signs relocated to someplace else. Can someone else verify this?

  • Sep-25-2019
    Heart Attack Grill Experience
The suggested list includes the free scale at the Heart Attack Grill, but I don't see that as an enticing attraction. Rather, the entire experience at the Heart Attack Grill is something that everybody should have at least once. The whole thing is tongue in cheek, with a "medical professional" (doctor or nurse) checking you out before you are set down at a table, the waitresses dressed as nurses, the food concoctions named after medical conditions, with burgers going up to 8 patties with 8 slices of cheese (and some of us demand bacon on top of that!). The entire place is a kick. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, except for one thing: They didn't have either iced tea, or soda water to thin out sugary soft drinks like
Coke. I bring my own soda water now, and I'm all set to enjoy!

  • Sep-25-2019
Play the "Field" Bet in Craps
Yeah, yeah, I know that almost nobody plays the Field bet in craps, but in downtown, if a 12 is rolled, you get paid triple your bet, whereas on the Strip (and maybe everywhere else), if a 12 is rolled, you only get paid double.

  • Jose Gamez Sep-25-2019
    Pizza Rock
Been there twice and enjoyed great pizza and lively atmosphere

  • Sep-25-2019
    4 Queens Free Spin
At the northwest entrance to the 4 Queens, there's a free-spin machine. I've never won anything, and I don't know of anybody who has, but it's free, and if you hit the longshot combo, you get big bucks.

    The D
Have a free drink at the Long Bar (Martini Lemon Drop) and lose 20 bucks in the slot machine.

  • Boomer 55 Sep-25-2019
    Access n odds
Access to multiple casinos easier. Coupon run. Decent food reasonably priced. Freak show entertains, doesn't disgust. Well, maybe a little. Wife's VP schedules at bars reasonable -- like 4 queens w decent IPA taps. Dice good everywhere for me. $5 tables safer when schnockered. The D's long bar for Michigan games. Decent VP at D too. Bummer= no more DuPars.

    Binions
    "Poker room at Binion's"

I don't think you can call what Binion's has a poker room any more. They closed the poker room and now have a few tables in the back near the sports book. Golden Nugget has the only real poker room Downtown now.

Also, I second the opinion of American Coney Island at The D.

  • Diane Crosby Sep-26-2019
    downtown
    Bingo at the Plaza
    Play less expensive table games
Marriage Can Be Murder and other shows at the D
Larger variety of slots as many of the casinos still have older games along with new.

    Mike Hammer
We make it a point to see Mike Hammer's comedy magic show at the Four Queens every time we go downtown. We make the trip about once a year and consider the show a must see!
