Question of the Day - 02 December 2020

Q:

Poll Preview: Why I'd rather go to Las Vegas ...

A:

The pandemic is raging. The litany of economic adversities seems never-ending. The holidays are shaping up to be less joyful than usual. And Vegas visitor volume is down 50% year over year.

So with an admittedly modest effort in optimism, this next poll will list the reasons that Las Vegas still reigns supreme when it comes to vacation destinations, but especially if the intent is to gamble.

The question is: Although I live in or near a casino or clump of them, I'd rather go to Vegas because ... And the following are the choices so far. We're sure you'll have plenty more to suggest. And thanks in advance for all your typically great poll-preview contributions.

There are more casinos to choose from.

The odds are generally better in Vegas.

The dining options are incomparable.

The quantity and quality of entertainment, in normal times, is far superior in Vegas.

The shopping opportunities are concentrated in a small area.

Las Vegas still has better deals than other casino destinations, if you know where to look.

It’s so many factors -- Vegas is just more exciting than anywhere else!

I don’t think Vegas is the bargain destination it used to be; I find better deals nearer home.

I don’t live near another casino destination.

    No more Vegas
We were screwed by B-Connected. It took that to realize how stupid we have been the last few years. Vegas workers are super people but casinos SUCK. That's where the word SUCKER comes from. But, we would have loved to see the new arches.

    The poker is better
Also, the comps in Vegas are somewhat better. My local casino's offer of free hotel nights are useless to me.

  • Edward Press Dec-02-2020
    LVA COUPON RUNS
Add a choice to your poll: I love to use the LVA coupon book for meals, free play, free rooms etc

    No Ice & Snow
With no snow & ice people don't need the big heavy coats & boots. That's very tempting mid-winter to somebody from snow country (like where I grew up). Even on the rare Vegas nights when overnight lows are near freezing at least there's no need to dig a path out or scrape ice off a windshield.

    Better locally
I like going to Vegas and I always will but I get more value from my local casinos. Absolutely the best host Ive ever had, every employee knows me by first name, sticking button? they’re on it and SMOKE FREE. No free liquor but I don’t drink when I gamble. Vegas forgot about these things.

    Bargain Vegas
In today's climate Vegas still offers the best deals for hotels and comps. Slots may be tighter on the strip but the restaurant options along with the casino choices still make a visit worth while.

    Variety
    It's a change of scenery.

    No more Vegas
Like Clifford I have lost my desire to visit Vegas. Went to a casino 100 miles from my home for a golf trip and overnighter. Offers a plenty, free rooms, free play free food. Been back as I feel they enforce social distancing and masks. One thing not as good is vp. If Vegas reverses it current direction with vp I'll be back, until then, no way.

    Poll
I think those are great options for the poll. The first, so many casinos to choose from, is the main reason for us, but a very close second is the dining.

  • Marty Dec-02-2020
    In normal times
Need the shows and the restaurants with their regular menus back first.

    Just Because
I've been going to Vegas for close to 50 years, and I've been to many other gambling destinations including close to home, and I've always felt that in Vegas the attitude was come on in, and lose money, but have a good time and we want you to come back. Other places are lose your money and get out of the way we have people waiting. I always feel right when I'm in Vegas, and I'll be back as soon as I get a vaccine or the numbers come down whichever comes first.

  • Jeffrey Small Dec-02-2020
    Rather go to Vegas...
Some other reasons to go to LAS:
    --I have friends/family there
--Las Vegas is a starting point for me to visit the natural beauty of the American West
--My local casino does not have the variety of games that are available in Las Vegas
--Las Vegas is a great place to visit with my friends--no other vacation destination offers the variety of gambling, entertainment, dining, outdoors things to do!

Las Vegas is what I like to call "Disneyland for adults"
you will see people say,do and wear about anything they wouldn't do at home or anywhere else. Just fantasyland to me :)

You Can Go Home A Winner!
The chances of catching Covid or an STD are so much better in Vegas than anywhere else!

  • Justin Dec-02-2020
    Something New To Discover
There's always something new to discover that I haven't seen before. Like a new restaurant to try, an attraction to experience (like a new Bellagio Conservatory display), or a new show to see. Also, the warmer weather. And sometimes I just want to get out of town.

  • Randall Ward Dec-02-2020
    poll
I live 10 minutes from several casinos but never go, in Las Vegas I can limit my play and keep it separate from daily life. Don't think going every couple days would be the same

  • Ray Dec-02-2020
    Like Jeffrey...plus
Jeffrey has several good reasons that I agree with. I'd also say Vegas is the big leagues, the locals are the minors. Our local casinos are for short (even 1 or 2 nights) gambling trips, Vegas is for a full vacation (even if ONLY 1 or 2 nights). It is also a stopping point on the way to visiting relatives in CA. Sunshine and low humidity too!!

  • 145tech Dec-02-2020
    Booze!
Free drinks while gambling! Not available at local casinos where I live.

  • David Dec-02-2020
    Ain't anywhere else like it
There's something for everybody. When I go there, I'm on vacation rather than a local casino visit. I would add an answer like all positive items mentioned above AND all negative items above.

  • Bruce Debele Dec-02-2020
    High Minimums
I don't think we will be ever go back to Vegas if the limits for BJ and craps stay at $15/hand/roll. I can find $5 at home..

  • gaattc2001 Dec-02-2020
With the rise of 6-5 Blackjack...
and multitudinous nuisance fees, we've switched our gaming emphasis mostly to Poker tournaments and what little playable Video Poker remains. For the last few years, we've been going to local casinos and sports-bar poker leagues at home; to Laughlin; or occasionally to Las Vegas--and then almost always "off-strip."
In Vegas last July we went to a strip property for the first time in years, because one of our party wanted to try out a certain restaurant. Did not even bother to check out the casino. Parking charges at this place were suspended at the time, but since then they have been reinstated.
And Heaven only knows what Governor Sisolak's going to do next.

  • Toad Dec-02-2020
I will always want to go
Vegas is so different from everything else in my life. With that said with all of the cons the suites are putting in place I will just stick close to home. All of the nickel and diming is a turn off to me and ruins the fun.

  • Dave Dec-02-2020
    Common destination
In addition to all the things mentioned and what Vegas has to offer, it’s a great place to select as a location for a meet up amongst family, friends and/or business associates.

  • [email protected] Dec-02-2020
    One
Which has diminished some with the de-theming of casinos is the variety of experiences with the hotels and casinos which didn't exist anywhere else. Emerald City, Ancient Egypt, New York, Paris, a Tropical Rainforest, a Riverboat, a Fantasy Castle - nowhere else had places like that. Now diminished, with most places just being typical nice resorts. Still, some of the variety persists, and you do have great entertainment options plus beautiful natural vistas just a short drive away.

  • BGIZMO68 Dec-02-2020
    Coupon Runs and Western Scenery
I agree with Ed on the coupon runs,we love it. And also agree with Jeffrey on Vegas as a great starting point to see the natural sites around Vegas.

  • Kurt Wiesenbach Dec-02-2020
    Abstainment
I try not to go to local casinos and only gamble in Vegas as then I don't risk money more than every month or two. My last trip was horrible, but at least I was able to leave and didn't have access to a bank branch down the road! I'd say Vegas as a gambling destination keeps me from gambling my money away from home. It also allows me to change up the vibe a lot easier by walking to another casino to "hopefully" turn my luck around! Plus nothing else compares to the sights and scene of the Vegas spectacle.

the weather especially in summer, the scenery love the west an the desert. The pools are great to relax an cool off.

    Business Travel
A good portion of my business requires road travel out west from Texas four to five times a year. I can often fly from Dallas to Vegas for as little as 79.00. Actually found some for 49.00. Air connections to and from Las Vegas are without equal. Can't buy a tank of fuel for that. Car and truck rentals are reasonable and with a wide choice, though not as good as once were. Vegas and especially Reno make excellent temp home bases. Cheap lodging, eats, and entertainment. For me gambling never enters into the picture.

  • cjen Dec-02-2020
    I'm done with Vegas
I get all my gambling locally. No 6/5 BJ, most liberal BJ rules anywhere. No panhandlers, low crime, great comps, no porn slappers, beacoup VGT slots that are the loosest slots anywhere, Vegas has zero VGT slot and better Covid precautions.

  • JoyceAula49 Dec-02-2020
    Options
We come for the weather and friends. There is always something new to see in Vegas!

  • O2bnVegas Dec-02-2020
    Why Vegas?
Tradition. For Strip snobs like us the 'glitz and glamor' is a treat for birthdays and holidays.

  • Kevin Lewis Dec-02-2020
    Reasons that no longer apply
Better gambling...not any more! Cheaper rooms...uh uh! Lots of inexpensive food choices...nope! Generous comps...thing of the past! Great players' clubs...forget it!

But Vegas still has the 400-pound guy wearing only a thong and playing the ukulele, so there's that. Viva Las Vegas!

  • NeonGlo Dec-02-2020
    extra value
Indian casinos don't have a Strip or Fremont Street; being able to wander with a drink, view the wow-factor lights/fountains/volcano/etc., that's a huge extra value. Drinking almost free on the casino floor, another deal-maker. Tons of eateries and shows to choose from is an offer I can't refuse. Vegas is more than a getaway. It's full immersion in gratification.

  • Michael Crunk Dec-02-2020
    Agree with NeonGlo
People can say anything but you cannot deny that there is no place like Las Vegas. You should have an option be:
      Because, Vegas!

  • Fumb Duck Dec-02-2020
    The Gouge
The gouge is in, Vegas is out!

  • dblund Dec-02-2020
    The Great Escape
Despite all the corporate effort to turn me off from visiting that has already been mentioned, Vegas is still the great escape for me. Once there, there is no work, no to-do list around the house, and most of the time I'm even able to totally ignore the news. It certainly helps that not far out of town are places nothing like home, such as Valley of Fire.
More specifically, for me all of the options for poker tournaments each day mean I'm able to find a game I want to play when I want to play, and my wife enjoys coming with as she gets to play her games in a variety of places.

  • Bucky Dec-02-2020
    Vacation destination
We meet up with friends and family for vacation time in Las Vegas to gamble and eat at various buffets. A single local casino, anywhere, just doesn't interest us at all.

  • Llew Dec-04-2020
    My .$02
Jeffrey mentioned a lot of the same reasons that I still love to spend time in Las Vegas, especially visiting my local friends there. Other reasons:
    - NO SNOW! I stay from early January-early AprI’ll
    - Barge and Embargo ( you might want to add “attend conventions/trade shows/special events”)
    - locals casinos (only Stations now since Boyd decided to screw VP players).
    - great Meetup groups for hiking, dining, hanging out
    - the beauty of the surrounding area, like Red Rock, Valley of Fire, etc
    - great dining. Lots of variety at all price levels.
    - only-in-Vegas attractions, like the Bellagio fountains and Conservatory. I miss stuff like the TI pirate show and the Luxor Egyptian themed attractions
    - and, believe it or not, the best thrift shops I’ve ever found anywhere 🙂
