Question of the Day - 01 August 2024

Q:

I'm wondering if the rental car center at LAS is a moneymaker for whoever operates it. I see on my upcoming car rental I'll be paying close to $50 to that facility. I realize that there are a lot of expenses on their end, but it seems with $5.50 per car per day going to that place, they might actually be turning a profit. I long for the days pre-COVID when a rental car in Vegas was a bargain.

A:

Reid International Airport spokesperson Amanda Mazzagatti wrote us to say, “The Rental Car Center is owned and operated by the Clark County Department of Aviation. However, space in it is leased by individual car-rental companies.

"For fiscal year 2023, the Rental Car Center’s revenue was $86.6 million.”

Mazzagatti didn't mention whether or not the Rental Car Center is profitable. However, considering that a percentage of the proceeds from fees go toward paying off various and sundry bonds over and above operating expenses, we consider it safe to assume that it does, indeed, operate in the black.

    Fees out of control
The fees at Reid Airport to rent a car are much higher than anywhere else I rent a car. This just goes to Las Vegas's newer reputation of nickel and diming for everything.

    revenue
local govt. operations that make $ tend to hide it, they'll never say profit, they say revenue, meets or exceeds expectations etc.

    Price Line 9.99
Long gone are the days that I could use priceline to book a car for 9.99 / day, and then just park it for free in Valet. Thursday - Sunday + $5 tip in/out. $50 was cheaper than 2 cab rides and cheaper than 2 people taking the hotel shuttle and showing up like low-ball tourists. Now parking is $50/day, cars are $300 for the week and the valets still have their hands out. Sad state of affairs.

    fees cheap
Rough, lots of cities out there to rent cars. Las Vegas comes up in countless top 10 lists as one of the lowest rental car rates as a total in the nation. That's all that matters, the out the door price.

And we just stayed in a 1,000 + sq ft suite at a 5 star resort in LV with an our of the door price of just north of $400 with taxes and resort fees. We don't even gamble there and don't plan too. You try to get a suite at a 5 diamond resort in any other major city in this nation for that price. Ain't gonna happen. The Las Vegas is a rip off and overpriced talk is old.

But it is true, Vegas is a rip off, greedy, nickel and dimming for everything. Squeeze some more money out of everybody for everything . Greedy and everybody has their hand out for more money
That’s part of the reason I have quit going to Vegas any more

    vs
Vs $1.99 breakfasts and $10.99 buffets of years past, that's true. Compared to other big cities in what it costs to stay and eat? Downright bargain. We travel lots, we know, see it all the time. These places all have resort fees and parking fees too. Heck, been to CA? Basic chain hotels charge $15-$25 for overnight parking, PER NIGHT, in an uncovered parking lot. It's all relative.

Frankly inflation is more of the issue everywhere. Las Vegas and elsewhere, so many things have basically doubled in price. Welcome to mismanagement.

    Big city comparisons are idiotic
I love when someone compares las vegas prices compared with other cities. The sunny 78's of the world who don't gamble when they come to vegas are what 5 maybe 10% ? So anyone that doesn't factor that into the equation of room prices is either being naive or has a terrible memory of what this city used to be.
