Question of the Day - 10 September 2023

Q:

Who actually selects the Question of the Day. A person or a committee?

A:

Usually, it's a person (Deke). All the submitted questions go to his email inbox. He sifts through them and selects the ones that meet the criteria (unwritten, but established over many many years) for answers.

Sometimes, however, it becomes a committee of two, when for example, a good question comes in that requires expert evaluation. Those generally go to Anthony, but on occasion to Jean Scott, Bob Dancer, Arnold Snyder (when he was alive), Andrew Uyal, Mike Shackleford, Blair Rodman, Houston Curtis, Chris Andrews, Colin Jones, Joe Dorsey, Karen Lesley, Richard Schuetz, Nelson Rose, Jeff at VintageVegas, various casino PR departments and unnamed executives, and others of our acquaintance.

Very rarely, it takes a committee of more than two, when Deke, Anthony, and a third or fourth contributor weigh the merits of an answer. Those discussions are always lively and enlightening, as evidenced in excellent Questions of the Day.

    Stars
How about allowing subscribers rate the question and the answer. We see the five star ratings on many internet items allowing the reader to rate an item. Sometimes the question seems a little useless to me but the answer is very interesting. I always look to see how many comments there are to rate the QoD.

    Hard to Believe
Some of the questions are either so specific or so far fetched that I find it hard to believe that they originated from readers and not someone on the staff of LVA. If you posted the ID of the person who submitted it, along with the question, it would give credit where credit is due, and be more believable.

    "Stars"and "Hard to Believe" Comments
I rate the "Stars" comment a ZERO. And I find it "Hard to Believe" that someone would question the integrity of the LVA staff.

    Applause for QOD!
I look forward to the QOD daily. That may be an indicator that I need more activities to fill my day... but I really do so much appreciate the time and effort that goes into the whole process of selection and answer. I AM sometimes off-put by the snide and sometimes political comments that answers generate, but - hey, that is the self-important world in which we currently live.

    Conspiracy!
When everything is a conspiracy ... nothing is a conspiracy!

Keep up the good work Deke and Anthony.

    Not so hard to believe...
It's not beyond the realm of possibility that the LVA folks would come up with a QOD that they think would be of general interest, and then answer it. I've seen firsthand, on other newsletters, that it's done occasionally. That said, I know for a fact that they print and answer questions from their subscribers, because I've had them answer one of mine.
