I've been reading Question of the Day for more years than I can remember, at least 15, but it was already there when I got here. So I'm wondering when you started doing it and how many questions about Las Vegas and gambling you've answered, out of how many questions you've received.
We ran the very first Question of the Day on May 15, 2004, so we're about to celebrate QoD's 18th anniversary. The first question was, "What is Question of the Day?"
Here's the answer, which gives you an idea of how closely Anthony Curtis' original vision for this feature has remained intact.
QoD is LVA’s QED, a daily FAQ, FYI.
Three hundred sixty-five days a year, until further notice or doomsday, we’ll be posting a question regarding just about anything having to do with southern Nevada, gambling, Huntington Press books, non-HP books, LVA-connected people, personalities in the news, etc. After 21 years in this business, we’ve amassed a collection of literally tens of thousands of requests for information and more pour in by the hour. This space is where we’ll answer and archive them for all to see and each day it’ll grow into an online symposium on all things Las Vegas and gambling.
Each day we’ll also post the next day’s question, but you’ll have to come back tomorrow for the answer.
Okay, back to 2022. As for how many questions we've answered, that's a little harder to calculate. All told since Day One, there have been 6,557 QoDs (18 x 365 - 13).
But we take a break for around six holidays every year, and sometimes we combine two or more questions on the same or similar subject in one QoD, while other times we run our popular "Questions. We get lots of lots of questions" feature, in which we answer anywhere from three to five in one day. So we'd say that by around this time next year, we'll probably hit the big seven-zero-zero-zero.
And if we don't know exactly how many questions we've answered, it's anyone's guess how many have been submitted. But we'll take a wild stab at it and say that, since we receive a half-dozen questions on average every day, that multiplies out to roughly 40,000 received.
Would that there were 200 or so days in a month, so we could answer them all.
