Question of the Day - 10 June 2023

Q:

Why doesn't LVA run photos with each QoD like you used to?

And

When do you think was the last time someone referenced the LVA newsletter when they needed the phone number for a Las Vegas hotel?

A:

First answer. In the publishing world, text is eminently malleable. If you "borrow" (i.e. lift directly) words from one source, it's called plagiarism, but if you borrow from numerous sources, it's called research.

Photos, on the other hand, are fraught. Two website publishers of our acquaintance have been sued for the unauthorized use of photos. You takes your chances if you snips a photo and republish it without permission. Buying them from stock photo agencies is expensive; plus, even the biggest of them have limited, if any, inventory on the subjects we write about.

So to really do it justice, we'd have to go out and take the photos ourselves.

Answering questions is laborious enough and we figure that with a click or two, readers can google images on their own. For example, we just opened a new browser tab, typed in Veer Towers (based on a recent QoD), then clicked on Images; timing ourselves with a stopwatch, it took 11.71 seconds to come up with hundreds of photos.

Second answer. This morning. We use those phone numbers on an almost daily basis.

At around 10 a.m. on the day this answer was written, we received a press release that Bellagio was extending its dinner buffet from three nights to five, adding Wednesdays and Thursdays for the first time since the shutdown. Par for the casino press-release course, however, it didn't include the prices, so we had to call. We clicked on the Newsletter tab on the site, downloaded the newsletter, scrolled down one page to the inside cover, and had Bellagio's phone number in about the same amount of time as it took to google Veer Towers.

Sure, we use our own list, but the question only asked about "someone." And it's so handy that we suspect other LVAers have gotten good use out of it over the years.

No part of this answer may be reproduced or utilized in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, without the written permission of the publisher.

    Local is good
I’ll sometimes use the list to get the local number. Much preferred over the 800 numbers.

    let me see?
Can one obtain a phone # from the hotels web site?
    Or, use YELP?

    Wish I was in Vegas
I like the phone list. I do not have to google each hotel. Sometimes I even think hey how about this hotel. Out of sight, out of mind. In sight on the list and presto I am thinking of hotels I most likely would not have thought of looking into.

    Telephone
What is the reasoning for placing a call to a casino or hotel? I can't really think of a reason to call.

    vegas baby
I use them all the time when planning a trip. A lot easier than trying to find a direct line on their web site mostly post their 800 to book rooms
