Question of the Day - 17 December 2018

Q:

I have noticed that the Question of the Day seems to answer softball questions and do consumer surveys. The surveys in particular would be of interest to the casinos and businesses in Las Vegas. Do you get support from the casinos directly or indirectly to run these questions?

A:

Every day we field questions at whatever speed they're tossed to us.

We'll definitely own the fact that we favor some questions over others, but we don't believe we shy away from the hardballs. We tackle guns, taxes, parking and resort fees, the new Boyd players club system, 6-5 blackjack, the barring of video poker pros, MGM Resorts' countersuit against the October 1 victims, a four-part series on the downfall of Steve Wynn, Raiders fans descending on Vegas, casino controversies, and on and on.

We also count on our readers to comment on the questions and answers, which you do regularly. It constantly amazes and pleases us how often you all show up with strong opinions on either side of the middle we traverse in the service of a certain amount of objectivity that we feel is important for an admittedly good-news website (and newsletter).

We also have to weigh how labor-intensive questions will be to research and write. Though sometimes it might seem like we can simply reel off everything there is to know or say about Vegas and gambling, it often takes a lot of perseverance to get the answers you're looking for. QoD is a free feature for everyone and, frankly, it's expensive to produce, so we tend to keep the law of diminishing returns in the back of our minds.

Which leads us to our twice-monthly polls. Every one of them is instructive to us, first and foremost, in terms of a lot of internal discussion about what we do and why. They also come in very handy when we're called for comments about the Vegas consumer scene by everyone from The New York Times and Wall Street Journal to E! Entertainment and the BBC. It's hard to overstate the power of a poll with 16,000 votes (like the recent one about blasts from the past) or even 5,000 or 2,000 to back up our impressions and opinions when we're asked.

The polls are also highly useful in our interactions and negotiations with the casino companies, particularly this time of year when we're finalizing the Member Rewards Book.

In addition, we know for a fact that many casino operations, marketing, and PR departments follow the polls to stay abreast of the pulse of Vegas aficionados and consumers; your votes for and comments on our 26 annual surveys really do count.

Otherwise, we don't get any support from the casinos or local businesses, other than their participation in our coupon program -- and that's much more an effort to support themselves than us. Other than a little advertising for good room deals and occasional promotions, plus our web affiliations, you don't see any local advertisers on this site and we don't take comps from the casinos. We pay retail for every meal we eat and show, attraction, and event we attend, and always have, and always will.

To us, it's the only way to do business in this town and goes a long way toward explaining why we've been around for nearly 40 years and are still going strong.

    Keep'm Coming
Totally enjoy the QOD. Yes, I do understand it is expensive to use staff time for a non-revenue endeavor but it is appreciated. It's a little slice of Vegas for those of us that don'e live in Vegas. I learn quite a bit about the history of Vegas and a little about how casinos think, except for the recent changes to the Boyd's players club. One can only assume they were thinking.

    Have enjoyed
I am surprised how much I have enjoyed the QOD for the past 13+ years or so. I look at it everyday - I must be addicted. Contrast that with the swearing I do at pop-up ads on other sites and never go back to them. It would seem the industry could learn something here.

    Thank You
LVA's staff has done a wonderful job over the decades and pleased many a subscriber. I admit that the insinuations of the Question angered me a bit since I'm well aware of LVA's reputation of staying separate from the influences of the casino industry. So let me say Thank You LVA for your hard work and decades of interesting articles.

    No softball at QOD!
Let me add MY praise to the others. I also look forward to your QOD each day. Sure, some of the questions are more interesting to me than others, but all are totally informative. Especially since it is a NON-REVENUE part of LVA!! Keep up the fine work and keep on surprising me every day with a new perspective on Las Vegas.

Are are we looking at the same QoD?
As a daily reader of QoD, I was shocked by the question - and impressed that LVA did not shy away from addressing it. The answers given daily include a deep level of research, lots of detail, and it’s evident that SOMEONE spent a lot of time on each and every QoD. I’m sure I speak for the multitudes when I say the variety, educational value, and quality of answers are noticed and appreciated.

    Piling on
Adding my 2 cents worth. We've followed the QoD since we became members years ago and have used them to help plan our biannual trips. So much good information about things to do, the history of the area, and the current political, economic, and social issues there. Thank you for a job well done!

    Thanks LVA!
I read the QOD and most of the other columns every day. You provide a great deal of accurate, useful and interesting information. You are the Consumer Reports of all things Vegas.
