Question of the Day - 23 March 2020

Q:
Today's QoD was interesting and made me think. Over the years I have had five or six questions answered. I'm sure others have had many more than that. Do you keep track of who has had the most questions answered? Without naming them, maybe you could tell us a number for the Top Ten?

A:

[Editor's Note: A few readers have wondered, publicly and privately, why we keep running Questions of the Day while, in one correspondent's words, "the world is falling apart." We have two responses. First, on this site, Vegas News items are dedicated pretty much exclusively to closures and updates and virus-related news, while the posts on our Vegas With An Edge and Gambling With An Edge blogs go into deeper detail about specific areas of concern. Secondly, similar questions might be posed: Why does broadcast news continue its coverage of the presidential election? Why do the newspapers continue to run the comics pages? Why do radio stations still play music? How can the sun rise in the morning and set at night? Times certainly aren't normal, but life goes on, so we continue to answer Vegas- and gambling-related questions that came in weeks and months ago. Simple as that.]

The question refers to the QoD of 1/22/20, about how submissions are sorted into categories on a range from an absolute answer to a definite no.

Unfortunately for the purposes of this question, we don't track who submits the questions that get answered, though we do, of course, recognize frequent submitters (one, in fact, submits so frequently that his questions usually start with, "Hello, it's me"; another we received recently began, "Hi, I'm back").

Since we don't track submitters, we can't put a number to how many would be in the top-ten most answered per submitter.

The question did, however, inspire us to post it in the hopes that those of you who've submitted questions will weigh in on how many you've had answered. If you like, you can list them, though it's not necessary, especially if for one reason or another, you might not want to claim them ...

No part of this answer may be reproduced or utilized in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, without the written permission of the publisher.

    Gee Deke, exposing me?
The question refers to the QoD of 1/22/20, about how submissions are sorted into categories on a range from an absolute answer to a definite no. Happens to be mine. But I would be guessing at how many I have had answered, say a dozen or more but then there are just as many that have not been answered, at least not yet and why I asked the question in that QOD of 1/22/20.

    QoD
I don't mind that the QoD continues to operate as usual. I want to stay informed on Las Vegas happenings, even if there is serious stuff going on in the world. Plus, it's nice to have as many normal things as possible right now. There's plenty of c_virus news online and on tv, it doesn't have to be covered everyday here.

    I've had 3
I don't know if its high enough for the top 10, but I'm positive I've had 3 questions answered on the QoD

    QoD
Thank you for continuing to run this. Need a little normalcy in our lives. Hope to be allowed back to Vegas soon.

Couldn't agree more with Andrew. Keep it up as long as you can !

    questions
I think I got one about scooters, but have seen several that are different versions of my questions. Keep answering and writing, we'll be back.

    Thanks
In these turbulent times, I spend a lot of my time reading. I look forward to seeing Question of the Day in my emails daily (one of the few emails that I anticipate). To those who may oppose this service, I say move on. I would like to thank everyone involved in providing this service, it helps to enlighten my day.

    Non-Zero
I know I've had some answered, but wouldn't even try to guess how many. I think at least once or twice my question was incorporated with someone else's.

I also agree that you should continue the QoD. We're all looking for some normalcy and entertainment in our lives. These questions definitely qualify! Besides, someday we all hope to return to Las Vegas!

    Please keep QoD going.
I appreciate all the time it takes for you to research the questions. I almost always find your answers to be insightful and complete. I can't think of a more authoritative, timely source for Las Vegas information

I look forward to the QoD, particularly now, when i an "Sheltering in Place" at home. Almost all of the the time I find the answers very interesting and relevant (Excluding questions on Vegan restaurants...Sorry!)

I think that I have asked 3-4 questions answered in recent years. I believe that all of the ones I did ask, were answered. This includes one on the "creative" use of some Member Rewards BOGO coupons that was in a "Reader Leader" section in the newsletter.

Please keep issuing the QoD. At some point this virus will be behind us and when it is the first place I am going is Vegas. AS an optimist, I still have my flight and hotel reservations for late May...

    not a record holder
I've submitted a few, had a few answered.

Gosh, I remember my first one answered--what a thrill! I asked about the headless lady statue in front of Caesars. Today I could have simply Googled it. Maybe I didn't know about search engines way back then.

deke is always so kind to reply "not sure if this can be found but I'll ask around." Or, "remind me if you don't see it come up." Those, I've mostly forgotten about myself, proving they deserved to hit the round file...or does LVA have a birdcage?

It is a rare QoD that doesn't interest me, so thanks to all who submit, and for the always thorough answers. Another thing is how many replies one QoD can elicit, from zero (not very often) to a slew...a sort of barometer of the collective interest, in a way. And the occasional pot-stirring reply that results in a food fight. Oh, wait...that's Kitchen Sink. Sorry. LOL.

    keep QOD going
I really enjoy the QOD feature, keep it going.

The one question I submitted was not answered correctly though. I had asked a question about Pai Gow and your expert answered as if it was about Blackjack. I should have been more clear in my question. The question about Ante's in Oklahoma casinos answered by your Oklahoma casino expert, I felt was incorrect. I posted a comment about it. All in all QOD is one of my favorite features.

just like most of the others!
Please keep QoD going as long as possible. Deke, you do a GREAT job and I agree with many that this gives us some normalcy in our current situation. How you have the time to do this is amazing, but I very much appreciate your work!

    QoD
If you want to know how many people appreciate the fact that you're still answering questions, why not do a poll. I think you'll be surprised at the number of people that support you and think this is the correct way to continue, after all, life goes on!

My next submitted question that is answered will be my first; however, nearly all Q's interest me, many express my unsubmitted questions, and the archives serve as a fine resource. Thank you LVA for answering and providing.
The comments also entertain, particularly the articulate and recognizable - thank you KL and CW.
So, keep that keyboard clean, Deke, and stay well. We've only just begun.

    QOD
thanks for maintaining as much normalcy as possible with the QOD and the LVA in general. if anyone isn't getting their fix on the latest virus news then they're not trying very hard because it's EVERYWHERE. again, we're all in this thing together so be cordial to each other and help where and when possible. peace

  • Bob Dancer Mar-23-2020
    I'll guess Jessica Roe
I would think that some percentage of QODs are generated in-house. That is, somebody at LVA reads something they think is interesting and say "Hmm. I bet that would make a good QOD." So they write up a question that lets them respond to whatever it is is.

Since Jessica edited the QODs longer than anyone else, she'd be my first pick on this, Anthony my second, and Deke my third.

BTW,this is all conjecture. Other than a few I suggested for me to answer, I have no evidence than this was done by anyone else. But it seems so logical!

  • Deke Castleman Mar-23-2020
    Jessica
Good guess, BD, but actually, it was the other way around. When Jessica was the QoDmother, she never liked Anthony and me generating questions that we wanted to answer. I, for sure, and even Anthony had to "jesstify" it to her; of course, we always had our reasons, but she always wanted to know what they were. (And we always convinced her, because when the QoDmother was happy, everybody was happy.)

Since I took over managing QoD, even I no longer generate them. We receive so many submissions, all of them worthwhile, that it seems almost ... immoral ... to answer our own questions.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks for continuing to provide information about Vegas through the QoD and other areas of LV Advisor. I'm spending way too much time watching the news these days and I find myself falling into mild depression and starting to cry about all the people who are sick and dying and those who are now out of work and uncertain as to how they will buy food. I'm a retiree with a secure income who is able to stay home without impacting my livelihood, so I guess I'm luckier than most, but I find that I really need some positive distractions to keep going. You are one of those, and I am very grateful to be able to spend a few minutes with you each day. I've been a member for years, and I hope to start planning my next trip to Vegas as soon as things start to get back to normal. In the meantime, stay strong, keep up the good work, and know that there are many of us out here who love and appreciate you all.

I've been reading the QoD for so long now, I don't know what I would do if it went away!
