Question of the Day - 11 July 2022

Q:

Questions. We get lots and lots of questions.

A:

Will the American Casino Guide return? While the coupons were not as powerful as the Las Vegas Advisor Member Rewards, they were still nice to have.

We're sad to report that our friends Steve and his son Matt Bourie made the painful decision, after 29 years of publishing the American Casino Guide, to discontinue the print edition. They've taken all the casino information from the printed book and converted it into a digital format that's available on the website, as well as their free apps (for both iOS and Android, also downloadable from the site). And they do have a few coupons for Las Vegas (Binion's, Four Queens, Orleans, Planet Hollywood, and South Point), free to print from the site.

Wasn’t there a hotel-casino named Barbary Coast on the Strip? I thought it was located somewhere near Bally’s. Is it still in existence? Had a great time in their casino and their coffee shop had some great deals on their graveyard specials. The food was always top-notch.

There certainly was. And yes, it was directly across Flamingo Road from Bally's. It's now called the Cromwell.

The $13 million Barbary Coast was opened in 1979 by a 36-year-old Michael Gaughan, and his partners, with 150 rooms; another 50 were added when the fourth floor of the parking garage was turned into the first floor of hotel rooms. It was the first Coast casino; the Gold Coast, Orleans, Suncoast, and South Coast followed.

Gaughan and partners sold the company to Boyd in 2004 (but later took back South Coast, renamed South Point); only a couple of years later, Boyd made a trade with Harrah's Entertainment: Barbary Coast for the Westward Ho, giving Boyd more land for its Echelon project that was planned to replace the Stardust (now Resorts World). The Barbary Coast was immediately renamed Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon. Then, in early 2013, it was closed for a year for the $200 million conversion to the Cromwell, which reopened in April 2014.

What is the story behind The Gambler’s General Store relocating?

Just the usual, as far as we know, landlord-tenant disputes over building maintenance, rent increases, and personality differences. The Gambler's General Store didn't move far, pretty much right across Main Street, from 800 S. Main Street to 727 S. Main. The new(ish) building boasts 8,000 square feet of every imaginable gaming item.

When is the Advisor going to have an app?

We've thought about it from time to time, but it's a complicated, time-consuming, and expensive process and so far at least, we're devoting our resources to more immediate goals.

    Barbary Coast
At least 2 episodes of Vegas had the Barbary Coast as background, once while under construction and again after opening. See Dan Tanna chase the bad guy (Cameron Mitchell thru casino on a motorcycle.

    App
What would be the advantages and disadvantages of converting to an app be for LVA and the user? Seems to me there isn’t much difference.

    Fond Memories
The Barbary had a great Dixieland band featuring classic musicians. I still have a couple of albums I purchased at the gift counter.

The Barbary had good double-deck blackjack, but was famous for sweating card counters. Getting barred there was considered a rite of passage. One morning, while counting myself, they barred the player sitting next to me who was not counting. Eventually I got caught as well.

    Barbary Coast
Had great times there. Top floor last room on the right gave us a view of the Bellagio Fountain better than staying there. I remember when the floor person would give you a comp for 2 to dinner if you hit a Jackpot or royal on one of the machines. A bank of FP .25 deuces was our favorite place to play. Friendly personal and never a bad meal. Missed the old place when it changed hands and changed for the worse. A comp at Michael's was always a real treat, my wife loved.

    one change
I personally don't care about an app. One request is to revisit the possibility of an 'edit' function for QoD. Otherwise, love this entire site.

    Great place to drink...
Many's the time we sat at the bar at Barbary Coast (with the always super friendly bar staff) and whiled away our time, slowly getting sozzled whilst the madness unfolded in plain view out on The Strip. Distinctly remmbr a burning hot day (and that's by Vegas standards) where there was a very sudden thunderstorm... the Barbary Coast emptied and people were running out to get some of that rain!! Very funny to watch. Lovely little casino.

    Dump
The Barbary Coast had turned into a dump, cheap ass rooms that stunk like stale beer and vomit. Its location on the corner kept the traffic coming and going - Only when you thought a place on the strip couldn't sink any lower they renamed it to Bills Gambling hall and saloon. Complete with Beer Pong tables and people sitting on the floor either stoned, drunk or both even the prostitutes wouldn't traffic the place.

The Cromwell complete with chandeliers, dealers in bow ties and classy uniforms was a nice change. The rooms were remodeled. Drais was a decent night club and they comped hotel guests and in the morning they ran a upscale Continental breakfast in the lounge area.

Sadly - the perks of comped access to the club, and the breakfast ceased to exist, in addition to free parking for guests. They further ruined the pool by turning it into a day club.

The other unique thing to this property is that you had windows that opened in a French balcony form with wrought iron.

    Free shuttle
My first trip to LV was in 2000 for my 50th Birthday (O.K. to do the math I was 72 on July 5th). My cousin didn't want to drive to the Strip, so there was a free Shuttle from the Barbary and saved me money and I did tip. In fact I remember taking all the free hotel shuttles from the strip to strip hotels and other places and saved me a lot of walking and money. I think there was a public buss also but not the Duce, I think that was later on other trips.

    No App, more subs
LVA doesn't really need an app, but should put more into getting more subscribers, especially from the downtown visitors because just using a few MRB coupons within walking distance would pay for the subscription.

    Shuttle
I also took the shuttle from Barbary coast to the Orleans from Ballys, usually to play poker. I was a poor cheapskate in those days. I'd also take the bus downtown for the day to play poker and single deck $5 at the horseshoe. An hour was usually good enough to get a comp at the coffee shop. Those were the days.

    Miss the BC
My parents would take me to Vegas with them back the the day. They would stay at MGM (now Bally's) but I would stay at the "Barbary" because it was cheaper. After a few years, they found that "Barbary" wasn't so bad and they started staying there themselves. We'd always start our day at the coffee shop at the back of the place for breakfast. My Dad only played blackjack so he was happy pretty much anywhere, but Mom and I would buzz between Flamingo, Caesars, MGM, Dunes, Aladdin and Bourbon Street. Oh what Fun.
