Question of the Day - 10 August 2018

Q:

I realize it’s still a couple years before the Raiders stadium is open, but my question has to do with the naming rights. Corporations are paying big money to get their name on stadiums and I would have to believe that the Vegas football stadium will command huge $$$'s. Any early guesses what companies might be in the running? Some casino brand, such as MGM, or some local company? Maybe Huntington Press?

A:

You’re correct in saying that naming rights for pro-sports arenas and stadiums cost big bucks.

The naming-rights deal for U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, completed in 2016 for the Minnesota Vikings, is $11 million for 20 years, while MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, where both the New York Giants and Jets play, opened in 2010 and commands $16 million a year for naming rights, the top naming-rights deal in North America currently, according to Sports Business Journal.

The SBJ quoted one expert who believes that the Raiders’ stadium could earn up to $18 million a year over 20 years for naming rights. And the Rams-Chargers stadium, under construction in Inglewood, California, could fetch up to $30 million a year.

As for what company might pay that kind of money to have its name on the new stadium in Las Vegas, LVSportsBiz.com reports that discussions are under way “with naming-rights suitors, though [a spokesman] declined to name the industry category” -- i.e., banks, insurance, tech, car, and food companies, and wealthy families.

The scuttlebutt around town is that the perfect candidate would be Southwest Airlines. We agree, though the original no-frills airline might not relish spending a third of a billion dollars for an image ad in a market it already dominates.

We doubt it’ll be MGM Resorts; the company is too closely linked with the Vegas Golden Knights, who play in MGM’s T-Mobile Arena, and the Las Vegas Aces, who play in their Mandalay Bay Events Center (MGM also owns the Aces).

It could, actually, be the Las Vegas Advisor, if 20,000 of our website readers were willing to commit to putting up $900 a year for 20 years. We’d like to call it Question of the Day Stadium. Second choice would be Anthony Curtis Stadium.

What say you, QoDers? We’re sure you can come up with some entertaining possibilities for the name of Las Vegas’ new football digs.

    Call it Macaroni
Vegas is so trendy. 20 years ago it was kid-friendly hotels and attractions. At-the-moment, it's how many oversized stadiums can we build on The Strip. I do not go to Vegas or even my own home-town sports games. TV coverage is close enough. I do not think about what I do not consider important. Yawn.

How about Fans are Sheep, or Sucker Stadium?

It appears it is being built without the concern for the fans' easy access or parking provisions; if you are disabled, just watch it on TV. People are sheep, just ask the owners. Welcome to Suckerville...

Bob Stupak Memorial Stadium. Each 5 yard section of turf will alternate between red and black and the team sidelines will be even and odd.

    Who has money?
When there was money to spare in the DotCom Bubble days, you got some strange names - for example, Infineon bought naming rights to Sears Point (now Sonoma) Raceway for 10 years, even though the company would be out of the USA after five or so.

Now watch Caesar's pay for it and, as a nod to Oakland, call it...the Coliseum.

I think that I have come up with a decent and accurate name for the new domed stadium. How about the "Runnin' Raiders Dome"? That would cover both teams using the stadium.

    Kindred Spirits?
Wow! I really started something here! Apparently several other "critics" don't take stadium naming all that seriously. I used to believe that the UV and Boyd stadiums were enough, but of course I am unaware of their capacities or (lack of)luxury features. The only game I would go to in Vegas is a women's charity game featuring Vegas servers and showgirl-strippers, such as Hooters-Twin Peaks v. Crazy "Fantasy" Girls, in uniforms that would make the "Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders" blush. (Am I serious?-Maybe!)

    A BARGAIN BY LCVA STANDARDS
Hey those prices for a major league stadium name look cheap compared to the $80 million yes that's right 80 million to name the new baseball park for the Triple A baseball stadium going up in Summerlin . More tax payers money being dumped into the over priced sports scene.

    stadium name
Puff the Magic Dragon Stadium. Some Vegas connections: Weed, magic shows, and dragon-themed slots all over casino floors. LOL.
