Question of the Day - 24 November 2024

Q:

I know, I know … RNG, random number generator. But is it always in play. It seems like when I hit a bonus or free spins on any slot machine, the wins are almost guaranteed to be bigger than normal play on the same machine. For example:  Let's say on a $5 max bet with a bonus, the machine pays $400. The next time, on the same machine with a bonus on a $5 max bet, it only pays $40. Is the same RNG in play during a bonus or free spins on a slot? Is there a difference during bonus spins and free play?

A:

[Editor's Note: This answer is graciously provided by Michael "Wizard of Odds" Shackleford.]

All random number generators do is just that: They generate random numbers. Usually, they produce an integer between 0 and 4,294,967,295. This second number is 2^32 -1, in case you were wondering. The game then does mathematical operations on it to produce a random event in a casino game.

A bonus round on a slot machine certainly uses a random number generator, somehow, to randomize the win. Bonus wins are supposed to be big, about 25x to 40x the bet amount on average. Usually, this is achieved by something special about free spins in a bonus -- for example, lots of wilds or no low-paying symbols.

Regardless of the type of spin, the random number generator is used to determine where each reel stops. A separate random number will be drawn for each reel and mapped to a position on the reel. This is, in fact, a lot like old mechanical three-reel slots, where each reel's stops are random and independent of one another.

Twelve hours after this question about gambling and not one comment. And an answer from a pretty sharp guy.

    Bonus Reels
On many games, it says that bonus reels are in play during a bonus round. I've always thought that this means there are more winning symbols or less losing symbols.

The RNG still determines the result, but it is a different pool of possibile results.
