Over the years I have heard conflicting stories about some sort of plaque or marker somewhere in the Venetian that designates the spot where the Rat Pack performed when the site was the Sands. Can you confirm and if so … where is it located ?
Yes, we can confirm that there's a plaque in front of the Venetian commemorating the Rat Pack. We've posted a photo below. But no, it wasn't the site of the Copa Room at the old Sands.
As you can almost see from the photo, the plaque is on the sidewalk along the driveway coming into the main entrance of the Venetian. There are also five sets of footprints below it.
The reason for the footprints?
Here's what the plaque says: "The legendary photo of the Rat Pack, with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop, was taken at this spot in 1960 adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip. In the early 1960s, the five stars were headliners at the famed Copa Room inside the Sands Hotel. The footprints below mark the approximate location of where these legendary stars once stood for this photo."
The Copa Room itself has been the object of some speculation in terms of its location on the Venetian property. We read on a message board that the Travel Channel took the blueprints of both the Sands and Venetian and overlaid them, finding that the stairs/escalator from the casino floor to the Tao Nightclub is where the Copa Room once stood. We couldn't confirm it, but there's also a YouTube video of it; we don't know who the expert is, but he seems pretty certain that the Copa Room was between the up and down escalators:
