Question of the Day - 30 January 2025

Q:

Results of the reader poll on what you'd bring back to Las Vegas from the past.

A:

The results are in and we're gratified by the large showing -- more than 5,000 votes.

We're sure it comes to no one's surprise that the top two vote getters are no resort fees and free parking. These are the two most despised consumer developments to hit Las Vegas over the past 20 years and QoDers/LVAers, especially, don't need a poll to prove it.

Number three is buffets, loved and missed by those of us who remember the great bargain-basement AYCE spreads of yesteryear, an unhappy casualty of the pandemic.

The rest of the top 10 are all casino benefits of yore that are also dead and buried for the most part.

It's all very instructive as to why a number of Vegasphiles who lament the good old days have abandoned Vegas altogether -- though many others of us can still find not only good, but great, value here, especially by paying close attention to the Las Vegas Advisor month in and month out.

You can see all the results on the posted blog page

    poll
my gripe isn't so much losing the buffets for me but for everyone else, when they had dinner buffets you could just got food court for a quick bite. Now there's 20 people in line and 2 people working, they essentially dumped thousands of people into a system that's always short staffed.

    Resort Fees reshmort fees
I really don't mind resort fees. The bottom line is is the hotel is not paying resort tax on them. At least theoretically. I remember when I used to stay at the Stratosphere many years ago the resort fee actually included access to the exercise room, valet parking and I think some other things, maybe coupons and deals. I think it was only about 20 bucks. So all you have to do just add the resort fee to the room rate, don't forget the taxes. Then that's what you pay. I actually miss the fun books, the Stardust (the steak and lobster special was great!), Westward Ho, Slots-A-Fun and the New Frontier. With the LVA and American Casino guide coupons you could walk into the New Frontier and get a ridiculous amount of free play. They would give you a Fun Book with your player's card and one with each of coupon books and there were other coupons in the books you could also play at the tables.I miss coupons for strip casinos. Now I use all LVA gambling coups&always give the place plenty of play.

    Wow! Only 5%-6%
I'm shocked that the top vote getters got such low percentages. Reading the ones that got 0%-1% made me smile, remembering the old days and some of the casinos that are still beloved by at least someone. It drives home that 2025 will be remembered as "the good old days" decades from now.

    +1 on Toni's comment
I agree with the previous comment, that 2025 will one day be looked back on as "the good old days". The only constant in life is change. Vegas can still be a value-oriented destination if you know where to look. Thank goodness for the LVA doing all the hard work for us of finding out where.

    Vote Count
The "more than 5,000 votes" number, is that unique individuals or the number of items selected in total?
