Question of the Day - 13 March 2026

Q:

I never purchase rental car insurance. I have a rental-car insurance rider on my personal vehicle that costs me about $25 per year, about the cost of one day of insurance from rental car companies. In the past, Nevada rental car companies simply asked me the name of my insurance company and noted it in their records. So I was surprised on my trip in February to be asked for a copy of my insurance for my personal vehicle. Otherwise, I'd be forced to buy the high-priced insurance from the rental car company. They said it was due to a new law. What law is that?

A:

That would be SB 194, which became effective on October 1 of last year.

The new law requires short-term car-rental companies to verify renters carry insurance coverage that meets the state’s minimum liability coverage limits ($25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $20,000 for property damage). Credit cards typically offer only collision/damage coverage and don't satisfy the liability-insurance requirement.

The law aims to reduce uninsured drivers on Nevada roads, prevent uninsured drivers from using rental cars as a substitute for personal vehicle ownership, and guarantee that rental cars are covered by insurance, protecting both the renter and the rental agency.

If the renter can't produce proof, rental agencies either sell the renter temporary insurance, refer them to a third-party, or refuse to turn over the car.

If you have your own personal car insurance, it likely covers you, but you have to prove it. Proof of insurance can be presented as a physical card or in an electronic format on a mobile device.

So if you're planning on renting a car in Las Vegas or Reno, be prepared to show your proof of insurance to the rental agent.

    Weird
I rented a car in December at the Rental Car Center near McCarran Airport (will never call it Reid) and they just asked who I had insurance with like they normally had.

    Always Carry A Card
I've always carried a card in my wallet with the insurance info. If you ever got in an accident in Vegas you would need the info. I've always been surprised that they never asked to see it.

    CDW coverage
Most credit card companies have dropped the collision damage coverage.

    Airport rental
We rented a car last December at LVS and I swear the counter person must get a 50% cut on the insurance sales. She tried so hard to convince us to get all the insurances that probably add up to more than the price of the rental. They love to point out they don't deal with insurance companies and you are on the hook. Fine, I'll write you a check if the car gets wrecked and deal with my insurance on my own...
Just rented one from the same company in Florida earlier this week for a few days and they never even mentioned insurance.

    Insurance Card Not Enough
When picking up my car during my Super Bowl trip, the boothling refused to accept the card only. She needed to see the policy coverage to make sure it met the requirements.

Please let us know what company refused to accept the card alone. That is not a company I'll do business with.

I'd also really like to know where this legislation originated. I can't imagine it coming from anyone other than one of the rental companies.

    ACE
I had to produce my declaration page of my personal insurance policy to ACE CAR RENTAL earlier this year in order for them to honor my reservation. They required me to have the specified coverage of 25/50/25K package coverage.

    Same as KR
They didn't ask at all on my December trip last year. I will be ready this year. Great QOD, thanks!

    This post saved me
After reading this QOD I made sure I had a copy of my insurance card with me on my trip that I just returned from. Syre enough to agent asked for my insurance policy number and I was able to produce the card. Easy oeasy after that. Another case where being a member saved me $.
