Question of the Day - 12 September 2017

Q:

I know most of the hotels in Vegas have resort fees but what happens if you have free rooms? I have heard some people say they were not charged resort fees if the room was free, but I know some of them were Diamond members who also don't have to pay for parking. Is there a list of hotels that don't charge the resort fee if you have a free room? We will be staying at The D.

A:

The answer is it depends on two factors: at which casino you have the comp and which casino department has issued the comp.

The marketing department might have a promotion going that waives the resort fee for rooms — for example, an invitational tournament for high rollers where everything’s free.

The casino itself, on the other hand, might give you a comp for a free room that doesn’t include the resort fee, which you have to pay.

From what we know, more often than not, a casino comp doesn’t include the resort fee, which is on you.

That said, we asked a couple of friends of LVA who often stay in comped rooms and they told us that at Caesars Entertainment properties, if you're in a Platinum or higher tier, the resort fee is waived. The Cosmopolitan has a similar deal.

Also in their experience, the Hard Rock, Tropicana, Downtown Grand, Tuscany, and Coast casinos, including the Cannery, don't charge the resort fee on a comp.

Sometimes things change suddenly. The Westgate now charges on a comp, though it didn't last year.

And here's what one of them reported about MGM Resorts: "MGM is the biggest offender. They try and charge everyone for everything: parking, early check-in and check-out, "upgraded room," resort fees, etc."

As for the D, we called Host Services and were told that you won't be charged any resort fees on your comped room. You'll have to put down an incidentals deposit, but whatever part of that you don't use will be refunded to you in the usual fashion.

    Resort Fees
I've never been charged a resort fee at the "M" or at the Rampart, or the El Cortez, on comped rooms.

    El Cortez: maybe
I don't know if it's still this way, but when I was in good graces with the El Cortez, and I was just a low-tier (Sapphire) player, their free-room offers included them waiving the resort fee. Back then (up to about 16 months ago), the resort fee was only $8.99. Now that they've gotten stricter as of 2017, and their resort fee has gotten much bigger, I'm not sure what the case is. Hopefully some other EC patron, who IS in good graces and is getting free-room offers, can chime in and say for sure.

    Resort Fees
I get comped at Venetian/Palazzo. No resort fees however no services either. Meaning if I want Wifi I have to pay the resort fee but its not mandatory. I don't usually get it now that cell phone companies offer unlimited data!

    resort fees
As a Platinum 'total rewards' member, I have always been charged a resort fee on 'comp' rooms. And they also charge a tax on the fees now.

    Resort Fees
Just returned from Vegas trip. Grazie level at Palazzo, invited by marketing - no resort fee charged, Diamond Level at CET - no resort fee charged. MGM, Gold level but earned Platinum during our stay, negotiated with host prior to arrival to waive resort fees.

    Never Paid A Resort Fee
I've been comped for a long while and I've never been charged a resort fee. Most recent has been MGM hotels and Cosmo and I'm at the second highest card level at both hotels (platinum for MGM, gold for Cosmo).

    TI
I never get charged a resort fee at TI. They do give you the option to pay one if you want - if you use a bunch of the services it's possible that they are cheaper bundled in the fee, so you have that option if you want it.

Westgate info is for all comps
I just called the Westgate, to ask about the resort fee on comped rooms. Their answer was that typically there is no resort fee on comped rooms there. The exception is if you get a calendar offer that has some nights comped, and others nights having a room rate. On that type of offer a resort fee is charged for the comped nights on that calendar. However, if you have the typical "comp for the whole month" offer, there is no resort fee on those comped rooms.
