Question of the Day - 07 July 2024

Q:

What happened to Robert Irvine's restaurant when the Tropicana closed? Did it move to another location?

A:

"Restaurant: Impossible" host Robert Irvine’s Public House opened in 2017 to more hype than we recalled seeing over a restaurant, especially at the down-in-the-dumps Tropicana. Turned out that the big build-up proved to be much more pie in the sky than reality. Irvine himself was perpetually missing in action and the food was pedestrian at best, in our opinion anyway. We tried it and were so underwhelmed that we didn't bother writing a review.

A few years ago, we wondered whether Public House might become another permanent casualty of the pandemic. It closed in the shutdown in March 2020 and not only didn't reopen, but a new outlet, Trop & Go, replaced it. We hadn't heard anything either way about it after that for a year and since the Tropicana was in the midst of changing hands again and the new outlet was in its place, we surmised it wasn't coming back.

But then it did. It reopened in July 2021. As bland and forgettable as Public House was, it was actually a plus for the Trop's food scene.

But now, the end has come.

Which brings us to the answer to your question: Nothing happened to it. It didn't move to another location. It simply disappeared. We'd be very surprised if it ever resurfaces.

    Like Guy Fieri’s Joint
Guy’s joint at The Lina is very underwhelming in my option as well.

    Public House
The year before the pandemic my wife got an offer for 4 nights comped at the Trop. So... we ended up going and on check in the girl gives us the low down on the comps for us... x amount of slot play and then she says "$200 a DAY food credit". I thought it was going to be $200 for the whole stay... I was stunned and asked are you SURE it says a day? she double checks and says yep. SO... we ate at Public House pretty much every day... the food was ok.. but even BOOZE counted on the comp. We tried lots of different dishes and never worried about the cost. Never gonna happen again either. ah well.

    It Did the Job
I stayed at the Trop for a couple of nights in December 2022 and ate at the Public House both mornings. Good service, good enough food served quickly--and that's all I really expect of breakfast. Ate an early dinner there once while playing there, it was OK. Lots better than some breakfast places, otherwise kind of meh.

Joseph--Agreed about Fieri's place. I've been there two or three times, plus once at his now-closed one in Manhattan, never been impressed. This is a shame, since I always liked his TV show.
